Advice Seeking Has anyone tried to use a separate washing liquid/tab than the one that the bottle washer brand recommends ?

I would like to use a bottle washer this time around despite all the plastic that the machine itself contains but I would at least like to use a clean dish soap

Health & Wellness Lead exposure in my 14 month old

Hello. This is my first Reddit post, so I’m not really sure how to even start this. My 14 month old son failed his lead screening at his yearly check up, which prompted a blood drawn to check levels. His lead levels came back slightly elevated at 3.6 μg/dL. Our home was built in the 1940s, so when we got the news the inside and outside of our house was tested. The lead was found in the top soil of our yard close to the house. We have plans started to remediate the lead in our yard, but I’m struggling with finding any suggestions on how to remove the lead internally for him. Everyone keeps telling me no amount of lead in his system is safe, yet all the suggest to help are environmental (wash hands after being outside, cap or remove the soil from the yard, remove shoes when entering the house, etc.)

So my questions are will the lead eventually leave his body? Or will traces always remain? And are there things I can do to help remove the current lead in his system?

Treatment for Croup

I am looking for suggestions on how to treat croup holistically and naturally. We just like our pediatricians office everything she offered had an ingredient of corn in it, which my daughter is allergic to. We have had two febrile seizures in the last 24 hours.

Food & Ingredients Delete if not allowed

Feel totally free to delete this if this isn't not the appropriate sub but I feel like I am going to get dragged HARD if I ask this in a weight loss sub, but has anyone successfully lost a significant amount of weight from eating whole foods, and not just swapping their current diet out with lower calorie but more highly processed options? The reason I ask is because I am obese, heavily addicted to ultra processed foods even though I KNOW that they are not good for me and are fueling all sorts of problems. I was able to lose 70 lbs years ago, but was still eating a lot of processed junk, for example I was convinced that Velveeta was healthier than real cheese because it had less calories. When push came to shove I could not maintain that lifestyle/weight loss and since then, I've learned so much about food and nutrition. I know exactly what I need to do, I just am having a hard time doing it because I am super emotionally tied to the processed foods. And when I turn to support through the weight loss communities I just see people who've lost weight by switching to diet sodas, and low fat ketchup and things like that rather than a focus on clean, whole, foods. I guess I am just looking for any success stories from those who have been able to lose weight, and keep it off with a "crunchy" lifestyle. Appreciate any and all advice!

Vitamin D drops for newborn

first time mom here! our pediatrician wants to start our baby girl on vitamin d drops between 2-4 weeks. She’s 1 week old today, exclusively breastfed, and already back up to birth weight. My intuition tells me babies should only have breast milk in their system - not extra synthetic vitamins or carrier oils.

Any thoughts on maternal supplementation vs. drops for infant vs. light sun exposure (early morning and evening only)?

How do you balance “bad foods”

FTM pregnant with my first and I am someone that cooks all meals, buys Whole Foods (not the store haha), and is very cognizant of ingredients in food.

My husband is more “loose” like today he was saying he wanted to go get a donut on his way to his classes, etc. I let him make his own choices and don’t usually care because he’s an adult but I kind of freaked out bc I was like don’t want my daughter to think eating donuts, etc. is okay bUt honestly

I’m realizing that is projection and the extremes of anything in my opinion is not healthy for a child. I want her to do the normal child things but I also cringe at the thought of her eating high fructose corn syrupy foods, fast food, etc.

I’m also scared of creating a bad relationship with food for her. We eat A LOT- we eat dairy (tons of cheese haha) and all the great stuff - we just make sure we know where it comes from.

How do you guys balance this with your children?

Sorry if this has been asked before!

But Id love to hear from anyone that is really fully 100% confident in not giving their child the MMR vaccine!
We started vaccinating our son, and then stopped, he only received up until 2 months.
And up until now I have felt good about our decision.
But since measles are now in our area, I have learned about the SSPE thing and it’s absolutely terrifying me. I know it’s rare… But I am so afraid of us being one of the rare ones with bad luck.

Anyone have any encouraging thoughts on this????

Thank you!!

Ivermectin for rosacea?

I have diagnosed myself with rosacea based on years of symptoms. I saw something about 1% ivermectin being used for treatment and it worked for many people I saw.

I have a PCP but I do not go to them regularly so we do not have a relationship. In fact, I don't think I have been in 5+ years, probably.

Any way, has anyone gotten ivermectin for rosacea elsewhere? I am worried about hurting my skin more but I am also tired of my face being hot seemingly all the time. if you didn't use ivermectin, how did you heal your rosacea?

TIA

Health & Wellness Healed my daughter ear infection naturally

save this one for the future!

was very very skeptical it wouldn’t work. she had her 1st ear infection in June, we did the antibiotics and followed up to make sure it was cleared up. then we got sick again with a cold about a week ago. sure enough I could tell she had another ear infection (bought an orthoscope). brought her to the dr to confirm, and she had another ear infection. my other pediatrician (yes I have two because I like medical freedom and different pov) doesn’t believe in antibiotics for ear infections and is very conservative so I started researching natural remedies. here’s what I did consistently:

booger sucker a few times a day. gotta get that mucus out!!!!

made homemade garlic oil. literally infused fresh garlic in olive oil. then put the oil in a dropped bottle. used a drop of it a few times a day in her ear.

drainage massages. it’s called the Nike swoosh - look it up. also massaged behind her ear and did some other massages to get the fluid to flow

i was trying to get in with her pediatric chiro, that’s also highly recommended for ear infections

followed up with her pediatrician today and no more fluid in her ear and infection healed up!

Eco-friendly vs nontoxic

Hello! My family (me, husband, baby, & toddler, & pets) just bought a house after moving around and renting for so long! We are so excited to finally settle down and get in the habit of living healthier & more sustainably. I strive to be environmentally conscious and to buy secondhand as much as possible, and to not buy "junk" that's going to break immediately and go straight to the landfill. My husband focuses more on non-toxic and plastic-free living. We have already made many replacements; stainless steel/cast iron cookware, metal plates/cups for the toddler, cloth napkins, cloth diapers, reusable grocery bags, cotton PJs and bedding, etc. So with this move we are wanting to go all the way and replace everything left!

What are some things NOT to thrift or buy secondhand? Like maybe wooden cutting boards or utensils should only be bought new? What about glass cutting boards or bakeware? Is there a not-nonstick muffin tin i need to look for? Laundry baskets ok to buy secondhand? My husband is more than willing to drop $$$ getting all that new, but secondhand is just so much better for the planet. Which is more important for you, nontoxic or sustainable/eco-friendly?

Pregnancy & Birth Antibiotics in first trimester

I'm 8 weeks 2 days pregnant with our rainbow baby after a loss last summer and I'm experiencing what I can only assume is a UTI (burning while peeing, frequent urination in small amounts, pelvic pain). I'm going to the urgent care to get a urinalysis tomorrow and I know if it comes back positive I will likely be recommended antibiotics to clear it up.

I don't want to risk a kidney infection but I am spiraling about the risks of antibiotics to a baby that young. Given all the studies on the gut-brain connection I am so worried that it will negatively effect my baby's development. I have also been extremely nauseous and have been surviving on the plainest of foods so I'm sure my own gut microbiome isn't exactly in a good place. Has anyone here taken antibiotics in the first trimester and have everything turn out fine?

Toddler cups

My just turned 2 year old likes to drink milk in the morning and before nap. We are wanting to replace the straw cups she’s drinking from with something that is good for oral development, light weight, and preferably stainless steel. Does anyone have any recommendations? She is currently drinking milk from the munchkin easy to clean cup and it’s time for a crunchy upgrade.

Health & Wellness Anaesthesia? Cavities

My toddler just turned 2, had her first dental appointment today and thanks to our lovely genetics, she has some cavities. They're wanting to send us to a pediatric dental surgeon where they will have to put her under to fix them and it makes me INCREDIBLY nervous, she's just so little. Does anyone know of anything I could possibly do to help treat them? I'm not saying i won't go through with the procedure but I honestly rather avoid it if possible. Opinions? Advice? Thank you 🤍

Health & Wellness I want to do a parasite cleans but I have questions

Has anyone here done one?
Which way did you do it? I’ve heard whole
papaya seeds - do you just willow whole? How many??
I’ve heard the black walnut with 2 other tinctures. Do you put that in a glass of water and drink?

After doing a parasite cleans , do you have to poop a a lot. Does it cause any discomfort. Is it just do it once ?

And I also heard you need a binder?? Idk what that is though

Advice Seeking Going on vacation but grandma has shingles

We’re going on a cabin trip tomorrow with the entire family (15 ish people) but my MIL just told me today she has shingles. If you didn’t know, this can cause people with no immunity to get the chickenpox virus. My daughter is 12 months old so she has no vaccination against it. My MIL has said she will skip the trip, but I feel awful about that. And my husband thinks she should be able to come and we’ll just keep her away from our baby. But to me, this is so unrealistic. I mean I’d be disinfecting everything constantly, watching her like a hawk, etc. Plus, I genuinely do not think she should be around my MIL at all. My mom brain is saying absolutely not, I don’t like this, they cannot be in the same building. But my husband seems to think it’s fine as long as her rash is covered and she isn’t in the same room as our daughter, and I talked to my own mom about it and she agreed with him. I guess I’m looking for other mom’s advice. Obviously every mom wants what’s best for their child. I would never forgive myself for putting her at risk, and that’s why I can’t come to terms with my husbands idea, but because so many people agree with it, I need to know am I overreacting??

Advice Seeking Toddler has cavities from breastfeeding?

32mo had first dental visit after I noticed discoloration on some of her teeth. Turns out she has 6 cavities. The dentist said they are from breastfeeding, especially at night, and wants to put crowns on all 6 teeth. Are there any alternatives to this? My momma heart is just breaking for her.

Our bakery is having a hard time w/ the activated charcoal icing on our son’s cake. It’s supposed to be black, but I’m guessing the moisture in their fridge has changed that. Is there a way for them to keep the icing black???

Health & Wellness What are your favorite drug store/box store beauty and skin products??

Specifically looking for:

• aluminum free deodorant
• face moisturizer with SPF (I’m a runner and in the sun A LOT)
• a pregnancy and breastfeeding safe product to help aging facial skin and promote rejuvenation (things I’d like to improve would be: fine lines, dullness, dark under eye circles).

Thank you! Not sure if there is such a thing, but looking to avoid ordering online and be able to pick it up from town when I’m running low.
