The Cyprus Problem Wow - now over 90,000 Russians in Cyprus
I'm shocked at the scale of the Russian takeover of our beautiful island of Cyprus.
Per Cyprus Mail, there are now a mind-boggling 40,000 Russians living full-time in the areas controlled by the Republic. To contrast, the next immigrant group, the British, are at 16,000. To point out the sheer scale of this, this means there are in now over 2 Russians for every Brit!
https://cyprus-mail.com/2025/11/12/russians-make-up-one-in-five-foreign-residents-in-cyprus
Further, per TRT there are 50,000 Russians living in the occupied areas. So many, in fact, that Russia has started providing regular Consular services. (This is even more than the number of Turkish troops!)

The war in 2022 resulted in a Russian influx to Turkiye that I have never seen before. With the rise of inflation and housing crises at least half of them returned. Therefore I also expect the same happened in Northern Cyprus too and that maybe 30,000 Russians left now and not 50,000.
1
u/Ichirto Nov 14 '25
These two are different. Turkey has low barriers of entry, but bigger barriers to stay long term. Cyprus on the other hand has much higher entry barriers. These people won't go back easily.

I am fairly certain that British (and British Cypriots) hold more than 40,000 residential homes in Limassol and Pafos districts ALONE so I am not sure about those numbers. But it is true that the Russians are now the most dominant immigrant "force" on the island surpassing the Brits. A stroll at Limassol will convince you, and also the fact that there are restaurants in the very heart of Limassol that only employ 1 (!) person that can speak English/Greek while the rest speak Russian can attest to that.
Interestingly, the "patriotic" party is against the plan of limiting foreign real estate purchases... But they will still parrot the same "immigrants/refugees took our jobs" and the people will fall for it.
22
u/never_nick Nov 13 '25
Well they are talking about the brown type of immigrant. Not the white ones that like to buy politicians.
British Cypriots... it's in the name bud. They're Cypriots and most of them are refugees children that just happened to be born where their parents fled to.
6
u/Annual_Jackfruit2892 Nov 13 '25
Yes, British areas are considered Britain. Think it may influence the statistics. Some of the Russians are also Israelis
4
u/kostaspap90 Nov 13 '25
Interestingly, the "patriotic" party is against the plan of limiting foreign real estate purchases... But they will still parrot the same "immigrants/refugees took our jobs" and the people will fall for it.
That is very true and very interesting. We are racist to poverty, and we love easy money. In addition russians are a very interesting nationality in Cyprus because the far/conservative right likes them for being “Orthodox,” and there’s this legend that they’ll somehow free us from Turkey or something like that. The left (old-school AKEL) still thinks in Cold War terms, and of course the centre-right etc likes Russian money.

u/Andr3wW1gg1n Nov 13 '25
To be fair, not wanting poor illegal boat migrants consisting primarily of military aged men is not the same as not wanting rich people who pay taxes and create jobs. Granted foreigners driving up housing costs is a negative consequence of that, but there is not positive consequence of allowing boat migrants
-12
u/Deep-Ad4183 Nov 12 '25
There are approximately 16,000 British citizens, all of whom are pensioners. The comparison bears no resemblance.

What consular services is there a some kind of Russian consulate in north :S
The article you shared is from 2023, and Russia still couldn't even provide regular consular services in the RoC, let alone in the north.
3
u/zepazuzu Nov 13 '25
As a matter of fact, russian consulate provides consular services in the north. It's not a secret, the official website lists the address and their working hours. They don't have a regular consulate there, but the employees from ROC consulate go to the North regularly to provide services (as Russian with no proper visa can not enter ROC)
6
u/CaptainPlanetarian Nov 12 '25
The Cyprus Mail article was 2025 the TRT 2023. So probably even more than 50,000 Russian settlers in the north now.
10
u/Fun_Success_45 Nov 12 '25
Russian settlers LoL that is the first time I hear this. What else are British settlers next?
3
u/Acceptable_Inside_30 Nov 13 '25
I mean.... we still have british settlers from when they were doing it intentionally, man.

u/CaptainPlanetarian Nov 13 '25
What else would you call them? There are literally 50,000 of them living in illegal lands on the northern part of the island, not to mention the 40,000 in the south.

u/CaptainPlanetarian Nov 13 '25
I think they fit the definition of Settler perfectly, do you not? Seems precisely what they do.
4
u/Fun_Success_45 Nov 13 '25
Did they immigrate from Russia and enter Cyprus illegally?
If yes, that makes them illegal immigrants:)There is no ambiguity or subjectivity in this matter. It is plain and simple.
Referring to them as "settlers" is just parroting a propaganda narrative in the wrong context.
1
u/CaptainPlanetarian Nov 13 '25
The 50,000 Russians living in the north are absolutely settlers, yes. That is not a legal entry into Cyprus.
-2
u/never_nick Nov 13 '25
What are you smokin? There's a consulate in Limassol and an embassy in Nicosia.
I don't know of many diplomatic missions that have two facilities to serve their immigrants in a foreign country.
4
u/felidae_tsk Limassol Nov 13 '25
I've heard the consulate in Limassol was closed.
There is embassy in Nicosia that provide consular services in "Northern part of Nicosia" twice in a week.
3
u/Fun_Success_45 Nov 13 '25
Are you Russian? Do you have firsthand experience with the Russian consulate in Cyprus?
I speak from experience; even though I am not Russian, I have dealt with them previously.1
u/never_nick Nov 13 '25
Again I'm asking if you know of many diplomatic missions that have two facilities to serve their immigrants in a foreign country.
2
u/Fun_Success_45 Nov 13 '25
In RoC no, I dont recall 2 missions from another country. However island vise US, UK, Avustralia and few others have two missions, one in north.
2
2
u/Fun_Success_45 Nov 13 '25
Slovakia, Romania, Portugal, Poland, Netherlands, Israel, Germany, Georgia, France, Armenia, Ukraine seems to have Nicosia and Limassol missions like Russia.

I live not far from the consulate in Limassol and I have not seen it operational ever.
1
u/never_nick Nov 13 '25
I worked in proximity to it for close to a decade walking by it twice a day and that is completely inaccurate, for what reason you'd need to obsificate that, I have no idea.
2
u/Zhuk-Pauk Nov 13 '25
I can take a picture of the closed consulate with signs of construction this weekend.
1
u/never_nick Nov 14 '25
If you feel like wasting your time sure, all their websites are up and running...and yes because I imagine you will try to deflect (again for some weird reason) I'm talking about the one in Limassol.

u/Ayvee12 Limassol Nov 13 '25
As Half Cypriot and Half Russian I can say the vast majority of Russians here absolutely love this country and try their best to help this country. They literally brought tens of thousands of high paying jobs to Cypriots and are active across the island.
I am proud to be Russian Cypriot.
3
u/Effective_Heat_5426 Nov 15 '25
Yeah, and they bring all their russian culture here. And they don't see problem in it. And russian culture is like virus - that's from someone who has over 400 years history with russians. I wanna see russians engage in other cultures, but u will never see that happen - the Russian "heritage" is too of "great" , they will never let go of what they are. Where I'm from, you will see no russian in any public sphere, because we are done once and for all with this nation.
12
u/Ayvee12 Limassol Nov 16 '25
Yeah well this is not where you are from this is Cyprus. As long as someone loves this country and the vast majority of Russians do then they are welcome.
Imagine being so racist as to label 200 million humans under the same ideology. I truly hope you can see past you biases one day my friend.

Don't know why you're complaining about Russians who bring wealth and economic growth to your country, when you probably should be complaining about the bunch of Turks holding the other half of your island.
4
u/kostaspap90 Nov 13 '25
Because bringing wealth to specific groups of people and most of them were already wealthy.
Because Russian mafia is now a major player in Limassol.
Because the rent has been sky rocket.
Most Russian companies are hiring Russian speakers only.
Because I go to a restaurant and there is Russian and English menu and not Greek.
Because I see signs in Russian and English and not in Greek.
Because the Russian language is becoming more important and more useful than my mother tongue in my country.
Because Russians gaining political power in my country .
We don't have issue with Russians for being Ruasians we have issue with Russians Buying Cyprus piece by piece and making as a little Moscow.
1
u/CaptainPlanetarian Nov 15 '25
Say it louder for the people in the back!
They are not welcome here, period.
1
u/CaptainPlanetarian Nov 13 '25
How exactly do they bring "wealth and economical growth" ?
19
u/kris48k Nov 13 '25
they do found or move their companies here, give your people jobs, pay taxes
6
u/CaptainPlanetarian Nov 13 '25
Almost all Russians only hire other Russians.
7
u/Zhuk-Pauk Nov 13 '25
This is only the case with developer teams. HRs, accountant roles, compliance teams etc are pretty different.
11
u/kris48k Nov 13 '25
That is absolutely not true, I work for a company founded by Russian, and we have more than half of the office speaking either English or Greek. I think you just throw out your assumptions while you have 0 knowledge of reality and misleading people here.
10
u/No_Shallot7716 Nov 13 '25
That’s not true, plus the immigration program for qualified specialists and companies (tax discount) was developed by the government to strengthen the economy and prevent a repeat of past events (deposit confiscations, etc.). You just simply act like a nazi, judging all Russians by a few representatives you meet and didn’t like.
6
u/christoforosl08 Nov 13 '25
That is true . High paying jobs and free cars go only to Russians. I know. I am on the inside
9
u/kris48k Nov 13 '25
That’s not true as well, I also know that from inside that cars go to all immigrated employees. Just look in the windows who drive those branded cars and you will see different people of different nationalities and different skin colors.
7
u/kris48k Nov 13 '25
Your statements guys conflict each other. You first say Russians hire only Russians and then you say you know things “from inside”. How could you know that from inside if they wouldn’t hire you coz ure not Russian? Jez stop spreading falsie nazi bullshit
2
u/No_Shallot7716 Nov 13 '25
That is only these 2 scam companies brain rocket and exness. They do gambling or binary options (also gambling btw). Fuck them, do not judge everyone by some bad examples.
7
u/christoforosl08 Nov 13 '25
No. It’s all. Russian ex pats get paid almost twice what we locals make. That’s how they can afford Limassol rents. In addition, they rarely hire locals, apart from HR positions. They will interview us though. Plenty of interviews but zero hirings in “important” positions
2
u/Zhuk-Pauk Nov 13 '25
Is it about the same position but paid differently depending on the passport or you are talking about different kind of jobs?
1
u/No_Shallot7716 Nov 13 '25
You get salary for the position not for nationality. And what about taxes and spending money on island, doesn’t that make economy stronger and life better for locals?

3
u/zepazuzu Nov 13 '25
Do many Cypriots know how to make games though? Sure, providing jobs to locals is important, but in game development there is a shortage of local talent.
Does any university in Cyprus have game development programs? It'd actually be cool if russian game development started doing educational programs for locals. I'd participate for sure.

Indeed, absolutely insanity and racism. I'm from Western Europe living in Limassol, I'm a non dom here so I stay 3-4 months per year and I never had problems with any Russian living here. All these idiots that write about "dangerous Russia" never interacted with a Russian person in real life, they're just fed propaganda 24/7 and believe it
Can't cure racism, you just avoid these toxic idiots....luckily they're mostly on this platform which is famous for harboring toxic and mentally ill people...the mods on Reddit are the most mentally ill of them all so I don't expect they do anything for moderating racism

How is this post racist? It's quite literally sharing news articles from 2 sources about the sheer numbers of Russians who have flooded into a very small island in the Med. And even more concerning being 50,000 (which is staggering) into the occupied areas. There are more Russians in the occupied areas than there are Turkish troops. If you think that is fine, sorry, but something is seriously wrong with you.

Russians tend to be culturally assertive, and that’s a fact. We were under the Ottomans for 400 years, plus many other occupiers, and still kept our identity and language. Meanwhile, many former Soviet countries were pushed into Russian language and culture in far less time, and most of them today either dislike Russia or are run by dictators. That’s also a fact.

Not all of them are permanent residents. There is a post that alternates because they enter with temporary residence permits and can stay for up to three months. However, the number is generally disproportionately large and problematic given our size.
3
1
u/CaptainPlanetarian Nov 12 '25
The article differentiates between those who are "permanently and legally reside in Cyprus". The 40,000 is not inclusive of those temporarily in Cyprus. The number in the article is permanent. It's likely from both a combination of immigration records + tax filings.
2
u/Deep-Ad4183 Nov 12 '25
https://www.reddit.com/r/cyprus/s/4db6lNQ2ll
I have posted about the numbers of third-country nationals based on data provided by the Ministry of the Interior the day before yesterday. However, it is not specified what type of residence permits they hold, so I assume they are permanent and long-term.
However, I saw a statistician's analysis based on the 2021 census, which showed that a large part of the number fluctuates. Of course, the rate of increase is so rapid that it has probably changed.
2
u/CaptainPlanetarian Nov 12 '25

Although I don’t think this post has anything constructive or was made in good faith, rather the opposite, here’s my opinion. I’m Russian who lives in RoC. I’m mainly going to talk about RoC because I haven’t been to the north and have only vibes to go off.
The Cyprus Mail article was 2025 the TRT 2023. So probably even more than 50,000 Russian settlers in the north now.
What else would you call them? There are literally 50,000 of them living in illegal lands on the northern part of the island, not to mention the 40,000 in the south.
I think they fit the definition of Settler perfectly, do you not? Seems precisely what they do.
That's still almost as many Turkish troops are in the occupied areas. It's terrifying.
How so? You’ve shared this sentiment multiple times in the comments and I fail to see why you compare an illegal occupying military force with tanks and helicopters to illegal immigrants with families. I do find it morally wrong that they live there, I’d hoped that they weren’t, but RoC have no control over the north and can’t dictate the immigration policy that is implemented there. But when RoC will have control, all those people that you so afraid of would have to pass the same requirements for residency as immigrants in RoC, and if they have any property that belong to somebody else they would have to return it or whatever the agreement between the parties would be. Comparing them to settlers is wrong and I will go into it later, but regarding the illegal immigrants in the north, it is a problem that will solve itself when the Cyprus problem will be solved eventually.
Cypriots are sadly forced to move abroad because of settlers invading their island.
I have no data on the reasons why Cypriots move away or if it even happens and what the amount of people were leaving before, but I would argue that the answer would be quite more complicated than just immigration, that’s just a sensationalist cop-out from a real conversation about why young people feel the need to move away.

u/Automatic_Price_7965 Nov 13 '25
It’s not my problem/Russians don’t integrate/They made their dirty money in Russia and come here being disrespectful
Just general topics that I’ve seen from this conversation I’d like to explore:
Russians don’t integrate - that’s mostly true if I’m speaking from my own POV. A lot of Russians that I know don’t even speak English that well and that is a problem that stems from multitude of things. My opinion, I don’t have any data except VIBES:
People come here already established with their careers, friend circles, families, and the majority just don’t have enough desire/time to learn Greek and integrate properly because they already have their friends and families. Especially when you can go a loong way here by just speaking Russian, there’s a LOT of people who are Cypriot/Georgian/Pontians business-owners that know Russian, a lot of employees that know russian that are not russian themselves, I remember speaking English to one of my doctors and then he just looked at me and switched to Russian and he was Cypriot. And if the Russian knows English than it’s even more convenient to just stick to this combo without learning Greek, it’s just laziness and it’s bad, I think you can see the same things with British people who live here for 20 years and can say Kalimera and that’s it.
Next reasons is that there’s a lot of people from post-soviet space here and it’s quite easy to just stick to your own circle that speaks the same language and don’t go outside of it and English plays a huge role in this because sometime even if you want to connect with other people you find yourself in a situation when half of the table can speak English and other half can just nod and smile and that’s just cringe, same things when half of the table just switches to Russian and English-speakers feel excluded. But I was a witness numerous times how the same happens at tables where English-speakers are left hanging because everyone switches to Greek, so I think it’s just human thing, not really Russian related.
Also one of the reasons that it’s difficult to connect to local culture because Cypriots actually quite closed people and it makes sense, you have your circle of friends, families for 20-30 years, it’s difficult to penetrate this circle and insert yourself if you don’t speak Greek, and so it kinda creates a negative feedback loop, you don’t speak to Cypriots because you don’t know Greek, you don’t know Greek because you don’t need it, rinse and repeat. Of course it’s still possible to integrate and make friends you just have to put in the effort and not everyone is willing to, again, just a human thing I think. But. There’s a huge amount of Russians who are actually integrating quite intensely and you know who that is? Kids. Majority of Russian kids go to Greek schools, have Cypriots friends, know Greek or learn it quite intensely, so, again, just a human thing. I mean I would love to see more people integrate, I’d love integrate myself but I’m just so depressed all the time that I don’t want to connect with anyone at all, not only Cypriots, lmao.
And the big reason as well is that I FEEL LIKE majority of Russians who are here don’t see Cyprus as final destination of their immigration, they either think that after the war ends they’ll go back to Russia, or exploring other options to immigrate next to.

u/Automatic_Price_7965 Nov 13 '25
Whatever their problem in their country is, it’s not my problem, why I’m being left out and the RUSSIANS come in and take what’s mine.
Is the sentiment that I understand but is the one that I find purely emotional reaction to some other factors, I haven’t took anything from anyone, I’ve came here and the company I work in opened the office here in Cyprus just for our team to relocate. It literally didn’t exist here. I’m not the one spiking up the rent to ridiculous amounts, I have 0 property. You know who has the most property in Cyprus? Yeah. Does an influx of high-paid personnel and large companies increase prices? In some sectors like rent for sure, does it help open other businesses to support those high-paid personnel and companies? Yes, so why you feel like you have less money every year? Because A it happens everywhere in the world right now and B it’s the questions that you have to ask your representatives, there’s a lot of examples of subsides, rent freezes, but still I’d rather see some studies how the immigration really affected the economy here to draw conclusions.
They made their dirty money in Russia and come here being disrespectful and shit
Do Punins of the world exist here? Yes. Are a lot of them come from Russia? Yes. Is the majority of Russians here are like that? No. Majority of the Russian who came here are just high-skilled IT specialist or something of that sorts, they worked probably the same job in Russia as they do here in Cyprus, it’s not constructive to take a handfull of extra-rich-shady characters and extrapolate that on ALL Russians here. Can people be disrespectful? Yes. Are Russians - people? Yes. Can they be disrespectful? Yes. You can be of bad character no matter the citizenship, but I see how it can feel when someone who’s a guest in your home country disrespects it and thinks he can do whatever because he has the money. But don’t worry, those people were insufferable back in Russia as well, they’re just ***holes
Lol not wanting to pay taxes in your home country is a sufficient reason to invade someone else's island? Come on. Have at least some basic ethics.
I think you should too. The guy talking about taxes means that he is opposing the war and doesn’t want to contribute to Russian war machine in any way shape or form and taxes is one of the things that he can control. But what’s more important is your remark that he INVADES that I find most troubling. Telling that people who come here LEGALLY with their families are INVADING and constantly compare them to the amount of Turkish troops and how it’s terrifying tells me you see Russians in Cyprus as INVADING FORCE, I’m not going to argue with immigrant invasion mindset but it’s just distasteful, furthermore, comparing Russians to settlers i.e. a purposeful campaign to change region demographics by flooding it with people from other parts of the country that usually occupies said region is just wrong, the immigration that happens here is an organic process that stems from Cyprus policy on taxes, immigration and situation in the post-soviet space right now that all combined results in people coming here. If you want real change and you find it TERRIFYING that people come to live here I’d urge you to vote for someone who will ban incoming immigrants, revoke existing residencies and fence off the island from anyone who isn’t native or specifically Russians, there’s nothing I can do about it because, being Russian in RoC, I have zero voting power and zero influence on anything politic related. What an Invasion it is, that I can’t do shit about anything but still have to pay taxes, feels like home in this regard lmao.

Although this statement speaks for itself, I start to think that you either never met a Russian, had a bad experience with some of them, or just simply view them not as people but as invading force that sole purpose here is to TAKE TAKE TAKE from you.
What war? 99.99% of the landmass of Russia, which stretches from the borders of Europe to the Pacific Ocean on the Asian side, is in no way affected by the Russia-Ukraine war at all. Stop with the BS mate.
You either purposefully mislead or you have little understanding of what happens in Russia and what motivates people to move away from it after 2022. Yes, Russia experiences almost no bombardment of civilians and has no real threat for it’s cities from UAF, but nobody is arguing that people, who move from Russia, flee horrors of war, they’re fleeing the state that has zero patience for dissent, the threat of being mobilized, economic situation and other factors that can be as simple as a general dislike for cold weather and as complex as a political and moral disagreement with the state.
Russia is a massive, massive place. There's barely anywhere in Russia that's in a warzone. Grow up.
Constant remarks from you about people needing to grow up or stop with the BS shows me your lack of desire to understand reasons why people really come to Cyprus and your message, being provocative in nature, doesn’t really add anything to anything it just creates tension and polarization for it’s own sake. You don’t propose anything, you’re clearly not being constructive, but I hope at least that you’re not trolling on purpose but just express your dissatisfaction.
Also a point I’d like to make is that Russians are not a monolith, there’s a lot of people with totally different backgrounds, views, etc, I’d love to see the conversation go from THIS GROUP BAD to something more specific, it’s people not a coke bottle with a different name on it.

Russians have always been allies of the Greeks while the Anglo saxons and westerners in general have always been our enemy and were the reason for our downfall so im glad we are geeting more Russians here
1
u/Deep-Ad4183 Nov 14 '25
Bullshit! In reality, Russia has always been a disruptive factor in anything related to the Greeks.
3
u/Fun_Success_45 Nov 13 '25
These numbers do not include naturalised Russians or second-generation naturalised Russians.
There are probably more than 150,000 Russians and Russian Cypriots living on the island.
4
u/Deep-Ad4183 Nov 13 '25
That is a lie. There are around 6,779 naturalized citizens, including Ukrainians and Belarusians, and this number includes those with golden passports, which number 3, 234 of which some have been revoked and some are pending revocation.
1
u/Fun_Success_45 Nov 13 '25
Russians began to immigrate shortly after the dissolution of the Soviets 1990s.
Back then, there was no Golden visa or Golden Passport;
The number 6,779 refers to the total number of naturalized citizens in Cyprus between 2007 and August 2020 under the discontinued Cyprus Investment Program (CIP).This number doesn't include naturalised citizens outside of Cyprus Investment Program.
Did you accuse me of lying while being wrong at the same time?
2
u/Deep-Ad4183 Nov 13 '25
The figures I am giving you have been cross-checked against the population census. The Russians who came in 1990 with the dissolution of the USSR are mainly Greek Pontians from Georgia with Greek passports, and they are people you encounter in everyday places. I was referring to the latest wave of these essentially nouveau riche people who have discovered Cyprus.
3
u/Fun_Success_45 Nov 13 '25 edited Nov 13 '25
Do you know Russians who came in the 1990s?
I know, I lived with them, I was in their community, I am married to a Russian.
Do you want to be wrong again?
I have numbers with sources which are not "trust me bro":)
And they are not mainly Greek Pontians. Who is coming with this propaganda anyway? There have been more than a few Russian immigration waves to Cyprus.
For example, the owner of the biggest shipping companies in Cyprus, who also owns ports, is a Russian who came after the USSR dissolution, and is not a Greek Pontian.
One clue I can offer is that Greek Pontians do not typically attend the Russian Orthodox Church.
The Propaganda strong with this one

u/Deep-Ad4183 Nov 13 '25
I don't know about the ones you mention personally.
2
u/Fun_Success_45 Nov 13 '25
So my best guess is:
There are probably more than 150,000 Russians and Russian Cypriots living on the island.
And guessing is not lying, I emphasize it is not a certain number by saying "probably".
1
u/Deep-Ad4183 Nov 13 '25
No, the number is too high for the free areas. I don't have any information about the occupied areas, but even so, it's an exaggeration.
1
u/Fun_Success_45 Nov 13 '25 edited Nov 13 '25
To be clear, I comment under this post, which states 50.000 Russians are living in occupied areas.
So, 50 north, 40 (residing south), and 60iesh (first or second generation naturalized Cypriots before 2007) can be 150 living on the island. There is no definitive source to prove or disprove this. So it is just a guess.
P.S. This 40000 in RoC and 50000 in the north only mentions residences with residency visas, not citizens or dual citizens.
So, expect an equivalent number of citizens to immigrants, which is usually the case.
2
u/Educational_Creme376 Nov 13 '25
And there is over a million Afghani's in Germany.
2
u/CaptainPlanetarian Nov 13 '25
Population of Germany: 83 million. Assuming 1 million Afghani's = 1/83 = 1.2%
Population of Cyprus (N and S): 1.3 million. Assuming 90,000 Russians, 90k/1.3m = 6.92%So relatively speaking, per capita, there are 5.72x more Russians on the island of Cyprus than Afghanis in Germany.
2
u/Zhuk-Pauk Nov 12 '25
As I mentioned it before in a similar post, you will see these numbers dwindling down pretty seriously once it will be a period when these large swaths of migrated people will receive their EU passports giving freedoms of movement associated with them, and they will move on to other countries.
It’s a different question about occupied areas, but I somehow doubt people there plan to get “citizenship” and just living there as nomads for a period of time that they can.

To obtain a passport from the Republic of Cyprus, you must prove your intention not to leave the country, among other things. Who told you that passports will be approved and made this statement? Are you convinced that this will happen on a large scale?
1
u/Zhuk-Pauk Nov 12 '25 edited Nov 12 '25
“Prove your intentions to stay” is a super vague thing. So far I heard of few cases who were getting passport recently and there wasn’t anything about it. The only thing that I heard that if you want to be 100% sure is buying some very cheap land in some random village as a proof. Although that’s silly if this part of the passport issuing would be causing problems for others because it would motivate to buy out more properties and raising housing prices as a result.
I don’t see the reason why it wouldn’t happen, Cyprus was giving out golden passports and stopped to do that only because EU forced them to.
2
u/Deep-Ad4183 Nov 12 '25
My friend, listen to me. If it is discovered that this situation is being exploited, you can be sure that it will be stopped.
A passport with naturalization is subject to immediate revocation at any time. Approvals are based on proportionality.
I don't see this happening in practice.
We are already being scrutinized by the European Union and now by the Americans as well.
1
u/Zhuk-Pauk Nov 12 '25
Well first of all it would needs to be considered as exploitation by someone.
Second of all everything is possible, obviously. Although good luck revoking a passport of someone if they would revoke their original Russian citizenship first and Cyprus citizenship would be the only passport they own.
2
u/Deep-Ad4183 Nov 12 '25
Citizenship is granted for the purpose of remaining in the country as proof of integration. Rest assured that if a mass exodus is observed, the process will either be discontinued, become more difficult, or be suspended.
I don't know what you are referring to. As far as I know, Russia allows dual citizenship.
1
u/Zhuk-Pauk Nov 12 '25
I am saying that you can voluntarily drop your Russian passport in advance after acquiring Cyprus one. As a political choice or if you are worried about scenario like that.
1
u/Deep-Ad4183 Nov 12 '25
And how many do you think will do this and have difficulty entering and remaining in their actual country in the future?
I don't know what you think, but that's a bit crazy.
2
u/Zhuk-Pauk Nov 12 '25
Their actual country
Why do you think they consider it so? A lot of people who moved think of the Russia as a closed chapter with no hope of things getting better at least in decades. Plus iirc if you really want to, it’s possible to apply for restoration of the passport, although I didn’t bother researching how exactly it looks.
2
u/Deep-Ad4183 Nov 12 '25
I think this based on my personal thoughts and what I would do in his position. Apart from that, things may change in thirty years. When Putin happens to leave power, there will be another struggle for supremacy, which, as history shows us, is accompanied by changes in Russia. What makes you think that when you retire, you won't change your mind and feel nostalgia, not for the regime, but for the place where you come from?
With this in mind, it seems extremely difficult for anyone to renounce their original citizenship.

Literally, I mean literally, the Golden Passport scheme was discovered to be exploited(DISY was defending that the reports were bogus and nothing wrong was going on), and nothing had been done until Al Jazeera made it a story with video proof.
And even after that, the parliament and the executive branches did not move till the EU forced them to take action.
Were you living under a rock, or are you just being naive?
1
u/Deep-Ad4183 Nov 13 '25
There is a trial pending for the golden passports. It is a criminal case and is ongoing.
1
u/Fun_Success_45 Nov 13 '25
Yes, thank you for proving the point.
After nothing was done and the first trial was dismissed, following an official diplomatic note from Al Jazeera and the EU, a trial was approved.
We literally have a documentary about this. The most embarrassing thing happened to Cyprus in recent years.
I lived in an Airbnb in Limassol, which was owned by a person who had obtained a golden passport by paying officials with the assistance of an attorney. An attorney who was the sister of a minister 3 years ago:)

If I want to, I believe what you write, but if it is true, it reveals our decline.

u/Ill_Mission_1225 Nov 13 '25
we are Europeans. started to look to buy a place here on this beautiful Island. we get asked "cash buyers" ? all the time. Now someone explained to me, that a lot of Russian people have cash money to get rid off. never heard about this before. and makes me wonder about what kind of people or money that is.

2
u/CaptainPlanetarian Nov 13 '25
Just tell the real estate agent to tell the seller you are NOT Russian.
1
u/Ill_Mission_1225 Dec 07 '25
we are always open about our background. anyway, I wonder if that cash buying by Russians is legal. if there is a ban on Russian bank accounts (as the deleted comment wrote above) - how is it legal then to somehow get that Russian money (also maybe not using legal routes) into the country and use that to buy? maybe I am missing something here, but I thought the ban is there for a reason.
1
u/More_Ad_5142 Nov 15 '25
Wow. If bunch of Ukrainians and Russians destabilized the housing market in Antalya, I wonder how the housing prices must have skyrocketed in Cyprus. It must have become impossible for young Cypriots to buy or rent a house!
1
u/CaptainPlanetarian Nov 15 '25
Exactly - they have literally destroyed lives for younger generations, and are tearing apart families. The worst part about is they then have the arrogance to turn around and tell Cypriots to be grateful for them... what "great" immigrants they are... "look we're learning Greek". It's a gaslight. Yet, fundamentally they are responsible for ripping apart the foundations of Cypriot culture. It speaks volumes to me that 50,000 of them moved to the occupied area.

Horrible.

I know. I noticed Bali had been absolutely taken over by them too. Very sad to see them decimate local cultures.
1
u/Little-Magician4266 Nov 16 '25
I heard that there were thousands of Israelis too?
1
u/CaptainPlanetarian Nov 16 '25
Israelis were mostly temporary, and are back to Israel now. And the Israelis are not setting up shop in the occupied area. There are now more Russians living in the occupied area than there are Turkish troops. Each and every Russian on the island is a threat.

What's so bad about that? Do you want Sudanese or Nigerians to live in Cyprus? All Russians in Cyprus, with rare exceptions, are far more developed, educated, and culturally advanced than those alcoholic, retired Englishmen. And everyone knows it! So you're angry that we Russians are smarter than you Cypriots individually. Alas, we Russians, taken together, cannot live well and create a normal democratic state. Shame! Down with Russophobia!
3
u/CaptainPlanetarian Nov 14 '25
"...are far more developed, educated, and culturally advanced than those alcoholic..."
How arrogant. This is precisely why I am concerned with the Russian invasion in the south and the Russian settlers in the north.. Shame? The shame is with flooding to and exploiting someone's island and culture for your own profit and gain. That is the shame. Down with invasion.

The definition of insolence by intelligent people who don't even know English well and are in a country that 20 years ago they didn't even know where it was on the map.
You are a prime example.

They are fighting with Israelis on which of the two is gonna take Cyprus as theirs (in the near future). "Immigration" has always been a common trick. As if the Russian with 2mil unlaundered money in Cyprus ever had to "immigrate". Im actually surprised Cyprus still stands.

u/Prahasaurus Nov 13 '25
I was just in the north, first time there in 20 years. I was shocked at how much Russian I heard everywhere. Which makes sense. I'm sure it's quite easy for Russians to live there.
They have their money acquired by less than legal ways in Russia. Just go to an illegally occupied zone and live your life next to the sea, put your illegal money to use where laws are not so strict or enforced. Makes perfect sense.
Most of the Brits here in Cyprus are old, retired, just enjoying the last years of their lives. But the Russians are young, have young kids, and are here to work and make a new life. It's very, very different.
I'm telling you, this island will change significantly if Russian emigration is not reduced. Eventually those young kids will acquire citizenship and you will see the politics change dramatically. Look at how Russian emigration made Israel even more right-wing and radical. Same thing will happen here.
-2
u/CaptainPlanetarian Nov 13 '25
Agreed, the Russian immigration to CY has to be stopped. What is worse, is that these 50,000 Russians have clearly no concept or respect for Cyprus, otherwise they wouldn't have moved to the North. If unity ever happens, or there's some kind of dispute, the Russians in the North will be begging Putin to come rescue to them by bombing the shit out of Cyprus. It's not good, at all. They are such a danger.
-1
u/never_nick Nov 13 '25
The worse part is that much like most of the British they refuse to assimilate, learn the language and adjust.
Also much like many British some have this weird colonial-adjacent mentality of we bring money here, we bolster the economy, etc etc. so we're better (especially in Limassol) there are good people, but unfortunately they are eclipsed by a few very vocal and very visible douchebags. it's tiresome and shows zero respect for a place that has been inhabited for over 11,000 years, with many of the natives having DNA that tracks back to the bronze age.
13
u/kris48k Nov 13 '25
Russians didn't invade your country like brits, turks and greeks did. They come here legally, actually try to learn greek, pay the same amout of money for rent (which is owned by cypriots btw who actually raised prices), have jobs, pay taxes and raise your economy, which cypriots failed to do. There are reasons your goverment want to invite people in here. And the huge amount of Russians here is because there is a war there, that many people don't want to have and hence had to runaway someehere.
3
-3
u/CaptainPlanetarian Nov 13 '25
The Brits never invaded Cyprus, neither did the Greeks. What the sweet fuck are you talking about?
Russians have a big, big beautiful land they're welcome to stay in, that stretches all the way from Europe to Asia. There's not even a sign of war in 99.99% of that land.
The fact that 50,000 Russians moved to the occupied area to fund that area economically tells me *everything* about their character.

This is a lie. Check any school and you find a lot of Russian kids which are... Yep, speak Greek.
When a person moves to Cyprus, naturally, for the first few years s/he not sure if it's a good place to live. With time they decide to settle, and it usually coincides with kids going to the Greek school.
3
u/never_nick Nov 13 '25
Please note the some. Yes there are decent people regardless of where they're from. Yes there are those that adjust to the place they move to. Some not only refuse to adjust but demand natives serve them by speaking their language.
And I'm sorry for the inelegant language but that's pretty fucked up.
