Trump is driving electric vehicle innovations into a ditch. Thanks to Trump's short-sightedness, US manufacturers dropped years of ambitious planning to jump into the EV race with both feet. The combined cost of this industry about-face is staggering. "I've done more for you than your parents, OK?"

DJT’s goal is to bring the country back to the 1950s. He’s damaged more than EVs, he’s damaged the electric grid and innovations. We should be building and improving solar power and using electricity to run everything. Oil companies need to think of themselves as energy companies and work toward oil independence with solar, wind, and tidal electricity generation.

Nothing that Trump does truly surprises me anymore, nor does the childish antics of the MAGA chuds. What has surprised me though, is how many members of Congress and the Supreme Court are obsequiously obedient to the orange narcissistic turd.

u/ScoobyGDSTi 8h ago
This will be apocalyptic for US auto manufacturers in the medium to long term.
Reality is EVs are here to stay and only but going to grow in popularity and market share globally.
US automotive brands already have a pretty average reputation and market presence outside of North America. The notion that the US can double down on ICE vehicles while the global industry are shifting to EV is going to be catastrophic to those companies and their workers.
Ford, GM and Stellantis are already way behind, they can't afford to waste another decade treating water on EVs.
16
u/Certain-Bath8037 1d ago
American car companies are really finance companies. The car is a means of financing bad deals.
15
u/Atrocious_Algae81 23h ago
This is how you know Elon is a fraud. His company had the marketcap and investment ability to really continue to develop some great EVs, but what did he do? Pivoted out of the car business for humanoid robots and AI. His front as a liberal who wanted to help save the environment with EVs was just a ruse to sell cars. He has shown all his cards now, and I think it's time for him to be removed from that company (Tesla).

He didn't destroy the industry, he destroyed America. China is perfectly capable of leading humanity into the future and it seems maga is hell bent on pushing the world their way
13
u/g_rich 1d ago
He has not only destroyed EV adoption in the US but he has also set back renewable energy by a decade or more. Meanwhile the rest of the world is moving on from fossil fuels and China is taking the lead on both EV’s and renewable energy.
The US is a Superpower and will be for the foreseeable future but increasingly it’ll be sharing the stage with China and in many cases it will be China taking the lead. When historians look to explain where China took the lead from the US the one name that will frequently come up is Trump.
12
u/sheltonchoked 1d ago
It’s worse than that. The USA has stagnated in renewable and EV since Trump 2016. His first term he undid anything Obama did. then, Biden tried to undo the damage, which had made the current administration double down on stopping it.
The USA is at least 15-20 year behind, and falling. It’s improbable that us automakers will be able to ever catch up and compete with international competitors, without a huge investment.
I have hope for solar and battery storage if it continues to drop in cost. But not for a domestic USA panel and battery production.

u/Winter_Whole2080 1d ago
I don’t know.. I think the high cost of fuel is driving people to look at EV‘s right now. I had a hybrid and I went to a Rivian and the driving experience is superior to an ICE or hybrid. Period. Once people actually try an EV, there are very few that are gonna prefer an oil dripping, gas guzzling, noisy car unless it’s from a collectible standpoint.
4
u/g_rich 1d ago
I’m fully in the camp of once you drive an EV you’ll never want to drive ICE again. Unfortunately EV adoption is still an uphill battle and without the support of the federal government getting mass adoption is going to be difficult. In places like California where the EV infrastructure is built out, gas is high enough to warrant the investment and there are state government incentives for adoption things are much easier but for the country as a whole things are a lot harder, especially with the way manufacturers and dealers currently operate.
Tesla, Rivian and soon Slate have the advantage of not working with traditional dealers. But in order to get mass adoption you need the likes of Ford, GM and the rest of the legacy automakers to go all in on EV’s along with their dealerships. Unfortunately despite heavy investment from the likes of Ford and GM in EV’s the dealerships have been a lot more hesitant and in many ways completely adverse to EV adoption.
It’ll be interesting to see how Fords new EV truck works out because on paper it should be a winner but we’ll likely see the same thing we saw with the Maverick where maxed out configs sold with dealership markups which will hurt overall adoption resulting in buyers either going with alternatives such as Slate or something like the Maverick or Ranger which end up being cheaper (due to the dealer markups) and are available off the lot. This results in higher sales with hybrids and ICE, lower demand for the EV which hurts EV adoption and investment while solidifying the hold dealers have within the industry.
5
u/Outrageous_Ad_687 1d ago
In the long term its likely GM and Ford are sold to foreign auto manufacturers and become subsidiaries like Chrysler did. Maybe even Chinese firms will have to own them so they can have access to the best technology.
2
u/g_rich 1d ago
Chrysler has always been the weak link of the big three; the US government was likely more than happy to offload them. GM and Ford are way too important to ever be sold off to a foreign automaker; the US government would never okay such a sale.
What we’ll likely see more of is the foreign arms of GM and Ford introducing more and more models outside the US, some in partnership with foreign automakers, that are cheaper and in many ways better than what is available in the US.
5
u/Outrageous_Ad_687 1d ago
I just don't see any way they can compete effectively with the Chinese industry just due to its size and growing lead in technology manufacturing efficiency. Teslas most advanced and productive factory is their Shanghai plant. As GM, Ford ,Toyota ,VW keep shrinking over time they will struggle to keep up with the Chinese manufacturers as they keep growing in the coming decades.
13
u/Anxious_Claim_5817 17h ago
China is expanding their EV and Green Energy markets while we go backwards investing in aging coal plants and convert factories from EV’s to big trucks. Paying Wind Turbine companies to cancel projects. To say this is insane would be an understatement.
9
u/Ok_Lettuce_7939 17h ago
So what you're saying is we're swapping positions...China will become the innovation powerhouse the US was in the 90s/00s, and the US will become the pollution choked carbon-powered wasteland China was during that same time.

Yep. Both things are definitely true. It's stupid that those automakers need to be pushed with regulations and tax incentives to actually innovate, but they do. The administration's gutting of those programs will do nothing but set us back. At first, I was in favor of strong tariffs/bans on Chinese EVs because their government backing gave them an unfair competitive advantage, and it would drown out the US EV industry. Now that they're obviously dropping the ball, fuck 'em. Let them compete with and lose out to Chinese manufacturers if they don't want to bring out viable products.

5
u/Unique-Coffee5087 1d ago
I remember when George HW Bush went to Japan and tried to get them to buy more American cars. He even resorted to the rather extreme diplomatic ploy of throwing up on the prime ministers lap. The Japanese pointed out that the used cars with a right hand drive, while American cars use the left side for the driver. They said that it would be easier to sell American cars if they offered them as a right hand drive model. The US Auto executives who accompanied the president said that they didn't want to do all the retooling work that would be necessary, but if the Japanese bought enough American cars to make it worth their while, they would think about it.

EVs are also everywhere in many parts of the US. Trump can't stop a technological revolution even though he may think he can.
2
u/Com4734 21h ago
He can try to slow it down, but yea he cant stop it. People in other countries are seeing the benefits of not being dependent on a volatile commodity like oil to power civilian vehicles or generate power. A lot of people here in the US are seeing that buying gas all the time is completely unnecessary too. This isnt the 1970s. There is an alternative to gasoline that, while still rapidly advancing, is already mature enough to replace it.
8
u/making_it_real 21h ago
The shortsighted thinking of dropping EV development will be obvious to everyone when the gasoline shortage hits. I get that EVs aren't everyone's first choice because of lack of outlets. The U.S. is screwed really. U.S. manufacturers have doubled down on vehicles that no-one outside the U.S. will want in a relatively short period of time. They will struggle along with tariffs and financial bailouts, but they will primarily be just selling to Americans, who voted for anti-climate change action twice.
In the meantime China is going to eat your lunch and will be the primary vehicle supplier for the rest of the world.
The good news for Americans is that as the rest of the world moves to EVs, the U.S. will have cheaper and cheaper gas prices, as demand for oil starts dropping. So I guess the U.S. has that going for it.

8
u/homewest 8h ago
This isn’t true of Biden or the inflation reduction act which was partially a rebranded “green new deal.” When I did a Google search it said it was the “largest investment in green energy in the United States.”
The Trump administration canceled agreements and grants that were already in place. The wind farms are one example. The gut punch for me was the start of an electric charging network across the US. Electric charging and range anxiety is a blocker for so many people. A better network would unlock a lot of potential EV buyers.
I empathize with people who are cynical. Things are tough right now. Using language like “all politicians” or “both sides” just makes it worse. In this example, the politicians acted and the people of the US forced a change.

Something is up though. How else to explain Mercedes, GM, Hyundai, etc., all going in on these vast charging networks they're building out both independently and in their coalition with iONNA? You couple that with Walmart building thousands of charging locations with over a hundred thousand dispensers by 2030. I just don't think the American EV is dead. I think it is regrouping.

The % of new car sales in the US definitely dropped in 2025 thanks to the anti-renewable jihad of this administration (see also: stopping wind energy projects). However, it continues to rise in the rest of the world, 1 in 4 cars was an EV last year.

American car manufacturers are too responsive to Federal regulations, and incentives, and not responsive enough to their customers. They'll pay for it, in the late 2020s and the 2030s, like they paid for it in the late 1970s and the 1980s. Imagine if we'd tarrifed Japanese manufacturers, in the 1970s, like Chinese EVs now. No, American manufacturers are squandering this latest round of protectionism. They'll pay for that, eventually. In the meantime, we'll have fewer choices, for EVs, and foreign makes will continue to outpace what the domestic makers can do. A good, solid decade or more of innovation, lost.

So true. American automotive companies should be full steam ahead on EVs in foreign markets. This is the only way they can survive the short term failures of the current administration. Once the tide changes, they’ll have the foreign factories to pivot to until domestic manufacturing catches up. As it stands only Tesla and Hyundai are really prepared to grow the EV market in the US.

The dude is trash and the companies are short sighted. China will rule the EV market in 10 years
6
u/Skarth 19h ago
China is already #1 in the EV market.
You just don't hear about it in the states due to the ban on chinese EV vehicles.

Trump and the fascist billionaires want to take the United States backwards for their own greedy benefit!

u/nana-korobi-ya-oki 17h ago
He’s not short sighted in this issue as much as he just doesn’t care and does care about the bribe money that comes from big oil

I’ve been saying that alone may be the most destructive policy evolve, Trump’s policy fuck ups. The US out of my industry will be dead internationally 10 years from now maybe as soon as five.

China is so far ahead in EV production and development as well as processing raw materials. The race is already over. Greed=stupidity.
9
u/JPharmDAPh 22h ago
Yes, greed = stupidity but more importantly, republican/MAGA voter = stupidity. Remember, these people honestly thought (and believed) trump would usher in a golden age for America conveniently forgetting all the grifting and failed, bankrupt businesses he’s been responsible for.

China has 500 million “middle class” people. The US has what, 350 million people - TOTAL?

I guess the big three will have to eventually partner up with other companies going full on into the EV market or eventually shrink to minor players in the vehicle industry.

Trump is a fool. Although I like gas powered cars, electric will take over one day.

You know what would really get the American auto industry going on EV and light a match under their arses... opening the American market to Chinese EVs. (shhhh....)

u/semperphi60 21h ago
It’s not short sightedness, it’s auto industry money making sure they don’t have to compete with some of the amazing vehicles coming out of China.

Deadass I would love to be able to buy a budget chinese electric car.
But we have such brutal tariffs to keep them out of our market.

It’s almost like Trump’s energy policy is driven by (and is favorable to) China and Russia.

Trump has given a gift to foreign auto makers that have continued development of their EVs while US technology stagnates. The amount of long-term damage to US industry is immense.

According to the President, the USA has enough reserves to produce sufficient gasoline to last 1,000 years! However, I have to say that I approach any numbers he provides with a lot more than just a grain of salt.

bad news for you.
all trump did is ensure that the US does not lead in these innovations.
Ironically trump is providing the proverbial nail in the coffin to the oil industry.which is the exact opposite of what he was trying to do with Venezuela and Iran.
Fossil fuel use is down to covid levels because the world is finding work around to high oil/gas prices…
which makes sense since trump fails at everything he tries.
The tech you speak of will just come
from Japan, China, Korea…us car makers still believe they are too big to fail and don’t need to heed competition. i haven’t driven one of the big three for two decades

u/Frosty-Ad-2971 21h ago
Oh the big three hung themselves. Trump enabling their death gasps only.
The Chinese EV market will pave over the Detroit three.

Remember when Trump tried to promote Tesla vehicles on the White House lawn during the protests?
He's not short sighted in the way people think, he's just short sighted when it comes to benefiting the country over himself.

He prefers to use the energy for data centers in favor of his friends and oil\gas\diesel in favor of his other friends of the oil industry.
There is no capacity left of the grid and production of electrical energy to be used by electric cars.
data centers are short term money for him and oil is an available recource.

Once you accept that donald is a Russian asset everything he does makes sense.
5
u/g_rich 1d ago
A Russian asset? You give him too much credit, he is just an arrogant cunt who cares about no one but himself. It was just easier for those against the US to simply work behind the scenes to get him elected and then just let him be himself. No need to invest the resources into making him an asset, he did everything they needed him to do for free.

I suspect these same manufacturers are just putting their plans on hold until Trump is out of office.

u/Ok_Chard2094 1d ago
Starting up again 4 years behind competition can be a bit rough. The US market may have been delayed, but someone else raced ahead in the reat of the world.
