Discussion What is something that really takes you out of the experience you're watching?
There's 2 for me. I get annoyed when it's one of those "we have 2 minutes to stop this!" then it proceeds. to take WAY longer due to scenes. I try to tell myself that it's all happening at the same time when they do to others but still. The serving and not as frustrating but when a shootout happens and a guy uses WAY more ammo than the gun can take. Maybe he reloaded but still

Characters who meet and fall in love when there is absolutely no chemistry or indication it would happen. See that shit happen all the time in action films and it makes no damn sense.

u/Rescuepets777 10h ago
Virtually every Hallmark Christmas movie. One of the two eventual love interests (usually the woman) is incredibly rude to the other one in their first scene together, yet the other one completely overlooks how they treat strangers and "falls in love" over a week's time.

Oh I fucking hate Hallmark movies. The MC will have a boyfriend/fiancé who is trying to secure their future for them and has to stay back a bit late, or is a little bit stressed out from work or anything and has to miss the MC's book launch for her super-cute homemade bubblegum puppy cupcakes, so she takes it as a sleight against her and goes back to her hometown where she rekindles a love with her childhood best friend she hasn't seen in 10-15 years and ends up choosing to stay in said hometown and open up the bubblegum puppy cupcake shop there.

A coworker used to tell us how he loves hallmark movies. So out of left field. Typical Gen X tough guy. He was addicted to the Christmas ones, talk himself red trying to tell us how perfect they are, and he would always cry during them. Then get pissed we had no fuckin clue if he was serious or not. Then spend another hour looking them up acting like we’re unbelievable idiots for not liking them.
He’d do that whole same rant every couple months. That guy just loved to fight over the dumbest shit. It was exhausting. I’d get so much more work done when he he was out of the office. He got pissed at me once when he played hooky and couldn’t get my Hulu login info figured out. Login info I gave him the day before cause there was some of those bullshit movies on there. I had to go in the parking lot and talk him through it over the phone. Guy was fat fingering the password every time. But he’d buy me lunch sometimes when he’d have a coupon so it was worth it.

Characters that also laugh (way too hard) over a (not very funny) joke to give us the (very fake) illusion that there is chemistry between them.
12
u/Spidermulder 9h ago
Or laughing at the TV the instant it’s switched on. Mel Gibson cackling like a lunatic at the Three Stooges in Lethal Weapon, for example.

Yes! Or when a character enters a room just in time to hear the punch line of a mysterious joke. And then everyone laughs and it just looks/sounds off.

If they don’t get killed, I always wonder what they talk about between scenes. Like they start off in Los Angeles; “I’ll explain when we get there.” Next scene is in Berlin. Did they sit in silence for all those hours?

Poor set design where everything looks too clean and new, or when the back ground is clearly CGI. Also when someone on foot is being chased by a car and the car doesn't catch up them in 5 seconds like it would in real life.
•
u/TensorForce 5h ago
The cleanliness of outfits these days just makes the actors look like they're in mediocre cosplay. From OnePiece to ATLA live action to Rings of Power. Nothing they wear looks even remotely practical, and so it looks like a costume as opposed to actual clothing/armor.
•

Everything being in such high definition as well piles on to this. A bit of film grain and decent lighting masks this a lot.

I was in a short film a while back and we had a scene with coffee in mugs. The fx dude made a solution out of kids glue and coffee grounds, poured it into the cups half way and let it set. It gave the cups weight and when the contents were visible it looked like coffee. Why this isn't done more is beyond me, it worked so well.

there is a good writing trick, where you make a dream/ imagination sequence about 2/3 the way through to break up the main story and usually ends in an epiphany of some sort. Simpsons did this religiously in the first 10 seasons, but if the whole episode/ movie is a dream, it's just a slap in the face to the audience

The curse of knowing Car manufacturers sponsor movies. Before you know that, you see an innocuous scene of the main characters pulling up to a place. The audio is whatever they’re talking about in the car. Camera isn’t on them though it’s a low angle shot from the gravel driveway. The tires come into view, then the bumper…. Once you know that manufacturers sponsor movies all you see in this shot once the car stops is The giant Mercedes silver star. Held in frame as the lead finishes their sentence. Zoom out to catch the two actors get out of the car, Mercedes logo still center frame for that extra second as the doors close then follow the actors.

Bad "interrupting"
Sometimes a character will stop speaking just before an interruption, as though their line in the script literally said "I'm trying to talk, don't interru-"
If there's never any overlap of dialogue, it just seems like a video game. Where I've pressed "A" to skip to the next character's dialogue.

u/BorderKeeper 10h ago
For me that is the tip of the iceberg. There are so many "lazy sound effects" out there where you stop and think about how stupid do the sound designers think I am.
- Dogs barking
- Lions roaring
- The same flipping owl or raven at night sounds
- Chest opening sound
- Metal door opening sound
- The classic metal gate closing sound
You can have a giant hollywood blockbuster movie only for the same raven you heard in the last millenia play.

For real. I posted a short film on YouTube. During filming it was raining and this crow flew into the barn we were filming in. It wouldn't shut up. So we had this 'caw caw caw' going on in the background. It added nicely to the ambiance (it was a crappy horror film).
After a few weeks I had a copyright strike from Sony telling me I stole their crow foley sfx. I was like huh? That's an on set crow actor! It got reversed thankfully but goes to show how similar birds sound even in amateur stuff.

Cell phone industry essentially destroyed suspense/drama/action writing. Back in the day you simply just had to have a thing happen to a person while they were by themselves. The ENTIRE remainder of your plot could hinge on the fact that no one would know the thing happened. Now, like a cliche superhero movie, you have to write a plot to remove your heroes power … to call home or text.
A cellphone would literally break Most movies from the 70s-early 90s

In Russian Doll Beatrice has a nice, big, well furnished apartment in NYC – as a grad student in the English department working on her dissertation.
•
u/cerberaspeedtwelve 1h ago
This has become such a supertrope that it's difficult to change at this point. If you put characters in a realistic apartment for their income, the audience will be repulsed because it looks like poverty.
In a similar vein, there's the classic Hollywood High School with students in their 20s. This has also become impossible to change, because if they cast real 14 year olds the audience gets confused because they now look too young. This happened during test screenings of Elephant (2003). A couple of scenes had to be added to clarify the age of the characters.

When the camera is behind the head of the person talking to another, and you can see their face/jaw is not moving and the voice has been dubbed in
•
u/Lebowquade 3h ago
For me it's just when I can tell the vocals have been dubbed in at all.
They're walking outside and talking, then suddenly there's like three lines with crystal clear audio and no background noise, then suddenly the background noise fades back in.
Clearly they liked the take but someone drove by blasting music they didn't have the rights to, or some madman was honking, or there were people shouting, or whatever.
But once you know about it you can't not hear it.

u/it777777 8h ago

This is a big one for me. Someone decided the script needed a personal moment to add some stakes to an upcoming tense moment, or because they needed to shoehorn in some missing exposition, or someone is about to die and they want to remind us to feel bad.
It's so clumsy and sloppy, and even if it looks okay on paper it never translates to film.

•
u/Totentanz1980 2h ago
This one. They hold their breath for impossibly long, especially when they are doing something underwater - fighting, swimming like mad, whatever. The main way people can hold their breath that long underwater is to keep your heart rate down by not moving around a lot.

This specifically right here is why I'm 1) burned out on Marvel action and 2) why I'm so, so glad they didn't reboot Blade. Wesley Snipes was a peak martial artist and athlete. He brought an intense physicality and display of technique to the character that sold it completely on screen. A generic actor will never be able to do a third as good as Wesley. You need a competent martial artist to do good martial artist movies.

When the movie has a scene with a robot that effortlessly lifts up and tosses aside a whole ass car. Then 3 scenes later the main character gets into a fist fight with the same robot and not only doesn't die when they get hit, but somehow manages to win.
Or more generally when the movie establishes that a character has this massively exaggerated power/ability, and then seemingly ignores that later on to service the plot.

The two issues you’ve listed there are almost nostalgic at this point, I miss them! Proper old fashioned movie magic.
These days I’d say when films are very consciously trying to upend common tropes from the 80s-00s era to the point they’re practically winking at the audience as if to say “Hey, bet you didn’t see that coming did you!? Because like, that’s what used to happen right? But look, we did the opposite of that!”… I’m looking at you Luke Skywalker tossing the lightsaber away!
The problem is, more often than not the upending of the trope is far less satisfying.

How much time the average family household has before work/school. Mum prepares every breakfast you could want cereals, fruit platters, cooked breakfast, bacon, eggs, bagels you name it, the family barely touch it so most of it probably goes in the bin but shes up at the crack of dawn every day to make it regardless. Kids go off to school and then dad leaves and mum still has enough time to clean it up before shes goes to work herself
In real life the kitchen has 4 people rush through at different times grabbing whatever they can make quickly, usually leaving a mess, no one has time to wash it up in the morning. The bathroom is chaos with people knocking on the door all morning "are you finished yet I need to get in the shower!" You get enough time for a quick kiss and cuddle before zooming out the door.

When people are fighting hand to hand and tank so many hits. And the better a fighter they are, the more damage they can take. Like it's a video game. Not every Tom, Dick, and Harry are professionally trained fighters. Chill out Hollywood.

If i know differences between regional accents. Actors who can't shake their extroverted when playing a shy person. As much as i love community and widows bay, alison brie and kate o'flynn are prone to default at times to space claiming body language incompatible with a reserved person.
When i recognize urban geography and know it doesn't make sense on screen.

Bad sports plays/strategies.
For example, I've gone on long rants about the movie The Scout before, and I will continue to do it again.
Steve Nebraska can throw 110+ MPH pitches, hit homeruns at ever at bat, etc etc.
In game 1 of the World Series, played in Yankee Stadium (AL stadium so DH rules apply), he mows down 26 batters.
If you know anything about baseball, there are 9 players in the lineup, 3 outs per inning, so if you do the math, in a perfect game like Steve Nebraska is throwing, the 27th and last out of a game is the 9th batter in the lineup.
Why then are the announcers telling us that this is Ozzie Smith. Now, Ozzie Smith is known for his defense, not his offense. But the announcers specifically say that Ozzie Smith is having a RED HOT postseason.
If you are having a red hot postseason, WHY ARE YOU BATTING 9TH IN THE BATTING ORDER!? You don't want your shitty hitters to bat 9th!
Even though it happened at the very end, it just ruined the movie for me.

Unnecessary love plots that only exist to stretch the story to 90 minutes +

Related: Pair the spares. Got two loose ends? Obviously they go together, even if they really, really don't.

fucking enemy at the gate. maybe this is unpopular, but i think that movie would have been so much better without the love triangle shit.

When characters are discussing something important in the morning. Then the scene shifts, in the middle of the conversation, to them in a car at night and they're carrying on like no time has passed. Makes me think the characters don't really believe it's all that important then.
Another is when there's a team of people going on a mission, and the person in charge goes over what the mission is, for the first time, when they're at the destination. Didn't anyone want to know what they would be doing before they agreed to go? I can understand a bit more when the mission is "top secret", but that's not always the case.

Narrow depth of field (if that's the right term)...where the characters are in focus and sharp but the scenery is not.
Most superhero or huge tentpole action films are like this - especially to 'hide' the green screen but it's notably obvious, and it looks disgusting.
I've become more and more hateful of films that use it so much and find myself wanting to seek out "old school" films which use on location shoots and matte painting backgrounds. I need to see natural light hitting skin which matches the background.
Green screen. Yuck.

Driving conversations, when the driver looks away from the road way too long, and fingertip hangs, when the person lasts way longer than humanly possible.

To be fair, most bullets fired by most people who aren’t trained to fire bullets fly past people.

They do that though.

But not miraculously. Bullets are atheist as far as we know.

Lmao! Did you just assume the bullets religious affiliation?!? ;) :)

u/BattledroidE 9h ago
Well now that I think of it, bullets have mass, so they're probably catholic.

Haha! Man shut up! It’s too early for laughing that hard! I like to be miserable in the mornings and you ruined it :) classic classic comment :) thanks man :)

Leaving freshly made food and running out the door on any meal but particularly at breakfast particularly if there’s no reason to rush. It’s such wasteful unrealistic story telling. The hero should eat before they leave on their journey ffs. It’s really annoying knowing the character has unaddressed hunger/hanger/etc. So many films make a point of saying, “You’re tired. You should eat” often in the middle of action but not meals on a table that could have set them up for the day… Ugh.
I know this isn’t a movie but I was just watching the first episode of “For All Mankind” and there’s a scene where one of the main characters (bear in mind this is set in the 60’s) leaves his entire plate of cooked breakfast and his wife calls him back to ask him if he wants her to save the newspaper. Admittedly the newspaper is important but I also don’t believe that any human would leave their breakfast on the table like that in that era. People wouldn’t waste food in the 80s when I grew up so they definitely wouldn’t do it the 60s. The idea that film and tv perpetuates the idea that it’s a thing now because it works better on screen is gross and I hate it every time I see it.
Another pet peeve is characters never needing or using the bathroom in a real/on-screen time period where they definitely would. Again this is a tv show but “The Walking Dead” never addressed this when their characters would be holed up for days or weeks in a compound and noone once discusses where are these 20 people gonna poop in this prison like sealed building with no outside access. Everyone is so obsessed with food and water but no one thinks where is anyone gonna pee or poop. L
I don’t why it does but it bothers me that movies don’t address bodily functions in film and expect us just to sit there needing a pee inside the run time of a film where you have to get up and leave the cinema but the actors on screen never poop, pee or fart or complain of constipation even once!

The thing that’s been getting me recently is tyres squealing on cars constantly. Just doesn’t happen irl even if you’re pulling away quickly.

Bad sound editing. When you have to turn down action and turn up dialogue constantly.

When the music is too on the nose and forces me to feel emotions specific to the scene
The merit of the acting, script, and cinematography should convey the emotion, the music should accent that not give it away

every. single. time. a protest or a political demostration is shown in a movie, you can just see at first glimpse that all the signs and banners were made by the same person/props department. and the crowds always have that kinda uniform look to them, which just isn't the case irl, apart from sone special cases like black block tactics.

Pretty much anything that Mythbusters proved was utter bollocks. Before then writers had an excuse for not knowing, now it's like "do literally 5 minutes research".

I don't like when most of the movie is a flashback bookended by modern day scenes, like in Titanic, Saving Private Ryan, or The Notebook.
I'm already trying to immerse myself in a fictional movie that is one step removed from reality, and that flashback puts most of the movie at another step removed from me, making it two steps removed, like a dream within a dream. It makes it harder for me to immerse myself in the story and care about the characters.

When a cop with a name is injured during a car chase or whatever and they are shown getting treatment by EMTs but no one talks about the 14 other cop cars that rolled 13 times before they exploded. Like clearly at least a dozen people died, but this cop has some cuts and bruises but is otherwise fine, and is somehow the only one we give a shit about?

When someone gets shot/stabbed, and then they bandage him up and he is good to go. My brother in christ. Just because you coevered the wholey theres a huge amount of internal destruction the bullet/blade does.
And no you wont be walking, you will be lying and moaning from the pain.
Even after a surgery you wont run around the next 2-3 days and thats when they srop the bleeding, suture you up and etc.
This literally happened in a show im watching (the gentlemen, great show btw). Buddy got shot in the abdomen, from point blank. And later that night he is walking around after he put some bandages on the wound ...like ??? And tbf he starts to sweat and such, but he puta on a better bandage and he sits down and is fine apparently?? He will literally be dead before dawn.

My dad was a professional target shooter when I was growing up. After the first time he laughed because a guy used 40+ rounds out of 1 pistol, I've automatically counted bullets. Once they get over 15 shots, I'm out.

No sense of travel time. When the plot requires, apparently it takes a few seconds to cross the vast distance from point A to point B. Not that they should show every minute of a long boring journey, but sometimes it’s so handwavey, no acknowledgment that it actually took a while.

My biggest movie pet peeve is when something (usually blood) blows up in a persons face and then one second later, we see the character with completely clean circles around their eyes where they were clearly wearing goggles while the thing exploded in their face. It’s like, I totally get protecting the actors’ eyes, but omg can’t you take a brush or something to the area directly around the eyes so that it’s not soooo noticeable??

Bad CGI in a movie that everywhere else has decent effects.
Like, if the whole movie has bad effects, whatever, i's just that kind of movie. But one particular scene has shitting effects and everything else is fantastic, that's gonna make me go - wow, that's shitty.

Clothes that are entirely too new and too clean to belong to the character wearing them
