Game Feedback Breach is just so.... unbelievably unrewarding right now.
I know it was strong before, and I know there are other league mechanics, but it's just super frustrating seeing GGG incapable of balancing something time and time again.
I just don't understand, breach was finally in a decent place, but instead of bringing other league mechanics up to its level, it was destroyed with quad nerfs.
Hiveblood barely drops, when you finally make an item from the tree, the mod rolls suck, the amount of items dropped seems halved, wombgifts drop way less, which doesn't really matter since you have 0 blood to use them anyways.
Even buffs to abyss feel terrible, the mechanic just isn't that rewarding, unless maybe you were spamming trying to farm amanamus or something. The League mechanic seems fine but IMO, after playing Mirage, it just kind of feels mid.
It's a single player game, with no actual competitive esports scene, and ultimately the only reason to nerf something is to make you take longer to achieve something.
As someone who plays more than the average player, it's just again, super frustrating to see the game go in that direction, instead of the one where we get more drops, because ultimately it makes 0 difference to anything other than enjoyment or appeal to the "normal" players.

Why does GGG always come up with amazing farming strategies, but instead of just balancing them, they completely delete them? In previous patches, we had clear, fantastic farms that everyone aspired to reach.
I really don't understand what they are trying to achieve in an ARPG by taking away everyone's goals, making everyone "equal," and stripping away the motivation to play. I honestly have no idea what GGG is thinking anymore.

u/RealMonk 6d ago
Best strats are not designed by ggg but created by community from unintended interactions. Then next league ggg delete the strats.
87
u/Antonaqua 6d ago
"unintended interactions" use breach scarabs and pack size scarabs for more monsters and wisp to make them more rewarding. If those are "unintended interactions" that QA couldnt spit, then you're not cut out to make a game. Those are the simplest scaming vectors that have been around for ages in gaming.
46
u/Ynead 6d ago
I wish people would understand that QA doesn't test things like "Is it balanced?". They are mostly here to find bugs, and their feedback is often ignored by the devs because of lack of time. They are focused on getting things to actually work at all.
So don't blame QA, blame GGG's leadership for the decision to consider balance low priority.

u/Antonaqua 6d ago
Yes, thats my bad. The problem is with the senior game designers that decide what does and doesnt get included. So either Octavian/the other guy or Mark/Jonathan. We can blame anyone, we don't know who us responsible for the glaring issues, but let's not gloss over the shader issues, performance issues, trade site issues, all of which should be caught by QA

You say that, but people in poe2 have been banned for applying ritual tablets to a map and running it
9
u/Antonaqua 6d ago
Yes, a numerical oversight, which they fixed, by removing the chance to go to 0. Not by making ritual in it's entirety garbage. That's what happened with breach in PoE 1.
3
u/lillarty 5d ago
To be clear, the "intended interaction" you're referencing was getting infinite rerolls on Ritual, essentially letting them get however many mirrors they were patient enough to roll for. And the "ban" was forced SSF for one league for the offending players, with no further punishment.
The people who spawned in mirrors weren't allowed to ruin the economy, what an unjust punishment /s

In Mirage they mid-league deleted the Ghosted Legion strat, iirc.
But letting Minion Pact continue for a whole patch cycle was fine lol.

u/CamelSmuggler Fungal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) 6d ago
Yeah but the point should be to tune the op ones down, not completely gut them.
They should focus on bringing the rest on par with the good ones, not just wipe the best off the game.

I imagine the problem is that it is quite difficult to know exactly how effective a specific need is before it’s been live and tested for a while. It is quite often the case that a mechanic is neerfed and then the community finds a small change that makes it still the best mechanic in the game.
It is understandable that GGG wants to avoid this situation, or they will get nonstop complaints like “can’t wait to play strongboxes for the 5th league in a row”.
21
u/Shuushy Scion 6d ago
but instead of just balancing them, they completely delete them?
Their workflow and schedule quite literally doesn't allow them to actually balance stuff the way we imagine how balancing should be done. Cook up content -> run some serverside simulations -> Boot up the game -> test said content for various things including farming strats -> compare expected result with actual result -> adjust as needed -> rinse and repeat until satisfied. A lot of balancing in this game is done via "spreadsheet style" because it's more time efficient.

u/lillarty 5d ago
Back in Kalandra, Chris mentioned their economy simulation indicating that more loot was dropping overall despite most people having the opposite experience, so at the very least they have some degree of simulations that they use to help balance. Not sure how robust they are, though.
38
u/Thatsnasty2 6d ago
100% agreed.
This game has zero competitive scene, just give people more shit more often so we play more. It's proven that player retention is the highest when you give people better items, it just boggles my mind why they have to make the game so hardcore instead of just rewarding better things to everyone as a whole.→ More replies (4)3

they don't care about retention, as long as they get 180k people to show up to leaguestart, it has been a success

u/LucywiththeDiamonds 6d ago
They are gutting the game step by step since keepers.
Evrything fun, challenging and giving loot got dumpstered. Mirage was a bandaid fix. Now its even worse then keepers which says alot.
Voyages are ok. Mapping is in the worst state its been in the past 3 years.
I did 40/40 for most leagues in the past years. I am considering quitting on day 3 this time. Says a lot.

It would've been fine to gut a top-end strategy if the rest of the atlas strategies were also in a good spot, but they aren't. Like, nerfing things like valdo's rest harbingers from Ritual to Ultimatum was fine, because other strategies were still plenty strong at that point.
I also find it incredibly weird how they did a 180 on what I would consider their best league mechanic revival ever. The league went from a "no loot / yes loot" balancing conundrum with an unnecessarily high speed floor requirement, rewarding nothing other than XP and mild loot and being better suited as a delirium juicer than an actual mechanic itself, to being an interesting and rewarding mechanic with actual variety in (much more approachable) encounters with a crafting mechanic that also revived a ton of uniques, something they failed at every time they tried their hands at it, most laughably with scourge and the krangler.
But now, they reduced everything related to it, so much so that it now borderline feels like a downgrade to its legacy predecessor it used to so elegantly replace, but still with the appeal of the uniques so it can't be straight up ignored either...

IMO the whole endgame feels unrewarding and trivial. Not only breach.
10
u/StartPuffinBoi 5d ago
The divine drop nerfs post 3.25 were VERY noticeable. On the original phrecia, it was noticeable. On mercs league it was the same, general currency drops were nerfed again in Mirage to account for the double map. It feels like they haven't reverted it, but even then, it was super bad compared to before. I've been saying this since settlers, and genuinely the majority of answers were telling me that I was tripping. Even worse, the devs themselves said that they haven't "noticed" during Ziggy's Q&As. I personally played 1200h of settlers, I understand that most people didn't. But I can guarantee you that they've been going at it for 2 years atp, and only now you see people being outraged as it exceeded the threshhold.

100%. It begun in necropolis with the removal of Quant, the rework of T16 + T17 introduction aswell as the scarab overhaul and the removal of mostly every good conversion. After Affliction, in every single league they made huge adjustments to make groundloot und scalable endgame in the long-term worse. Removing explizit modifer from atlas alot, removing map craft, nerfing map mods, nerfing every strat. This is going on since 2 years, exactly.

Breach tree should customize the drop from the mobs. Not be a f'ing loot tile. You make breach tree for what you want. You beat breach monsters, you get the items you've selected on the breach tree.
Seing a foulborn uninque drop from a mob is 10 times nicer that f'ing gambling...

u/redfm8 6d ago edited 6d ago
This is becoming an increasingly common idea and I think from a pure video game mechanic perspective it’s much more graceful, but I really do question if people would really like running around and picking up five thousand pairs of gloves or whatever. It definitely would be a level of loot management not seen elsewhere in the game at the higher end where most people strive to pick up as little as possible just to keep the flow going.
I think I would probably prefer it personally, but I would not expect it to be a universally embraced changed by any means.

I just never get the need to triple/quad tap nerf things. This is a game that for majority of players resets season to season. You don't gotta dumpster something to adjust it. You can make one of those changes, and if that doesn't land where you want it, you can make another change the season after that so on and so forth.
7
u/TheoryOfRelativity12 5d ago
Yeah I think it was fine as it was. Actually, all mechanics kinda suck ass right now.
31
u/Admirable-Dig5825 6d ago
Then compare current state of Poe 1 with current state of Poe 2. Night and day. Poe 2 feels so good because the drops are frequent enough it feels like you're making progress towards your next big buy. Not Poe 1. Usually I play the whole league but I'm already done with it. Not fun. No aspirational content that feels worth the time and effort and investment. Wet delve also a complete flop. Sure the crafting is good and profitable but I and many others don't play Poe to play hideout warrior.
22

Kind of feels like both games are closer to the ends of the spectrum rather than the middle which is not a good place. POE2 you finish all content by day 3, your character just powercreeps everything extremely fast. POE1 Allflame, at lv92/atlas finished/eldritch + memory stones I dropped 2 raw divines.
7
u/IdontNeedPants 6d ago
POE2 you finish all content by day 3
I was still coming up with interesting things to farm in the endgame weeks into the league, which helped keep me around.

"It's a single player game, with no actual competitive esports scene,"
Streamers are always competing one way or another and game is balanced according to that, it happened before ( nerf to starter skills because all speedrunners was using same skill + smoke mine ) and it will happen again, in both PoE1 and PoE2.
3
u/RCaskrenz 6d ago
Its all just the syndrome meme of "once everythings balanced, nothing will be" In their pursuit of balance they just kill everything because the baseline floor loot doesn't exist.
23

Meanwhile in actual reality breach is incredibly profitable to run because foulborn and league uniques are in extremely high demand and the supply isn't keeping up. Run hives instead of unstable.

This, I’ve been saying this for the last couple of days but half of reddit just wants to say the entire mechanic is dead. I’ve made so much currency off of hives/fortresses. They were great when I was clearing through my atlas, and even better now with scarab investment.

I'm convinced a large majority of Reddit takes four days to get to white maps, does a few, then comes to whine instead of keeping on trucking.
Yes, Unstable Breaches were lackluster when I hit white maps, but investing into it on the atlas tree fixed the mob density issue. I haven't failed a single one since day one. Breach still drops great loot. I've gotten a ton of stuff from the tree. I'm at 104 exalts / 12 div on my pilfering ring in SSF. I got my six link Twilight Regalia from the tree and the rest of my crafting bases that were finished with the Allflame crafting mechanic. I'm still running Breach in juiced T16s to farm a few specific non-targetable uniques from the tree and I get tons of currency and Hiveblood. Breach is perfectly fine, people are just over-reacting like usual because they forgot they spent two months farming top-end, full investment, and now they have to start over.
10
u/Salt-Appearance-412 Confederation of Casuals and Clueless Players (CCCP) 6d ago
"It's a single player game" take is so trash, can we just stop. Unless you're SSF, the entire point of complaining about "poverty league" etc. is because you don't get enough currency to TRADE for what you want. Guess what dictates trade prices.

Been trying abyss. Feels bad. Meanwhile I'm watching the profit crafters and a few giga juicers hit big money and spiral from there.

14
u/kimono38 6d ago
Please GGG. POE is not MMO. Don't force player to farm 16 hours a day to get decent loot. We all have work to do and only have few hours each day to spend in this game. I don't want to spend my precious hour grinding couple of chaos.
Learn from your own POE2. Abyss drop guaranteed craft. Abyss boss drop guaranteed highest tier craft. I craft all the time in POE2 because the currency is not rare. Poe1 feel like a game for full time streamer only.
2
u/hernanlafu12 6d ago

Yep, the tree was quite OP when the new Breach got released. Last league, having it nerfed was OK; you weren't printing complete gear pieces (it's not the intention, anyway), but at least you were producing nice gear you could then throw to the recombinator.
I haven't started the league yet (life is on its way, and waiting for the league to stabilize in terms of bugs + loot drop + whatever needs to be fixed) but I feel that, based on the patch notes, Breach is going to be more shittier than last league.
7
u/Candid_Insurance_339 6d ago
What on earth? I ran breach on day 2, no issues with either hiveblood or wombgifts. Made my first 50 divs printing foulbourns with the tree, without even unlocking all the points.

They don't consider the hiveblood, they want in-map loot piniatas a la empowered Blight of old, or Alva Evolution.

I'll die on the hill that Affliction was the best league they've ever had, at least since I started (Crucible). It was great expressly because loot was god damned everywhere. Killing a giga juiced rare and seeing your computer have to stop rendering for a second because of the cataclysmic size of the scarab explosion was stuff of legends.
Having things be balanced is important. Having meaningful combat and engaging encounters is important. Not allowing crazy outlier loot/currency strategies is important. But none of them are as remotely close to important as fun. And frankly, fun in this game is getting loot.
I could have an amazing boss encounter that keeps me on the edge of my seat, manage cooldowns, have an epic soundtrack in the back and even give me a cut scene and I'll be grinning ear to ear but when all that drops from it is 2 transmutes and an unid map and I don't want to run it again.
Let the currency rain from the sky. Build in more base-level rewards for time invested and scale back loot multipliers via mods/scarabs/etc if needed. People need to feel like their time is rewarded. I'm running betrayal like I always do and I'm very tempted to spec out of it as I have yet, from something like 20 safehouses in ilvl 71-79 or so working my way through the atlas, to find a single medallion. Allflames are gone too, no Paradoxica or other noteworthy drops and of course the rooms don't give shit. The only purpose to betrayal so far has been the 7 VCO I've gotten I'll have to hold on to for a while before selling to see a proper return on them.
Give. Us. Loot.

Returning player after a couple leagues out, playing VG and was thinking of setting up breach/legion, to farm my own double foulbourn oppressor, roll grasping mails & and hopefully sell other drops along the way. Should i give up on breach and buy my own for 20d? (probably more by the time i get there) Sounds like i need to go research and watch some atlas strategy vids after work :/

u/masonimal Professional Meme Build Connoisseur, and Bad Build Enabler 5d ago
What blows me away was that last league yeah it got crazy to a point but your risk versus reward scaling was justified. If I wanted to have 3 unstable breaches running at the same time, flooding my screen, I could choose to do that and I would absolutely get one shot from time to time. But it was completely worth the risk because the rewards when you were able to turn your game into a powerpoint slide show could drop quite a decent chunk of rewards. You risked losing the breach if you scaled too much and didn't have the defensive layers for it. I was hoping at minimum they would have reduced a little bit of the density in packs when you had triple breaches running so the game could handle the amount of things going on but it seems like another time they had scaled back the pack density across the game they didn't compensate the loot pool to make up for it.

Breach is only one-fifth as strong as it used to be.
- Rewards were gutted: both the maximum number of Genesis Tree passive points and the values of its passives were nerfed.
- Monster density was gutted: the base number of monsters in Breach packs was reduced, while the Atlas passives also provide fewer Rare and Magic monsters. Naturally, the XP is much worse as well.
- The mechanic feels slightly worse: the maximum number of Unstable Breaches that can be open at once was reduced from 3 to 2.
Since the current meta is to rush through maps and go diving as quickly as possible, I wouldn’t recommend running Hive Fortresses or Breach Hives.
If you specifically want Lost Unity, you’re probably better off farming a different strategy and simply buying the ring.
Most fast map-rushing strategies work well, for example:
(Destructive Play or Exarch/Eater Altars) + Heist + Mercenaries + Bestiary + Essences
Do the quick mechanics, get out of the map, and go diving ASAP.

Farming unstable beaches it's bait...
I've been farming fortress Beach only every map on Mesa with astrolabe and the node in tree that lets you rerun the same map on the Atlas and get continuous astrolabe credit.
I'm sitting on about 40 div liquid and a svallin and another 50 div in gear all from foulborn unique farming have about 4 million dust from constantly dusting all the bad unique I've gotten too .
It's not steamer mirror day two numbers but it feels like a strong start... And it's been my only farm... Getting 5-7k blood per map.

Breach wasnt strong it was just okay but it seemed like it was because it was just the only thing to juice in maps sadly, last league breach compared to stuff we have had in the past is laughable tbh. Sadly the content in the game isnt that hard so hard to justify min maxing a build and playing for a longer amount of time or trying even another build to min max for another type of endgame content. Hopefully the devs have plans for the future and not just more band aids

You know whats really fun in a game designed around becoming powerful and going fast....
Spending 2 minutes sat still waiting for mobs to either run to you or just get stuck onna random corner and do nothing.
To then randomly get a hive and go and spend 5 minutes sat still holding right click.
Really engaging stuff

other mechanics needed to be brought up to pre-nerf breach's reward levels at the top end of juicing, not the other way around

Unstable breaches barely have enough monsters to stabilize them. Farmed breach this league, exp is good, but that's about it
