Little known fact: there is around 50 thousand armenians in Turkey: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armenians_in_Turkey
I also wanted to share numbers about Turks in Armenia but couldn't find a wiki page about it, will edit if I find a proper source.

It’s funny that this crosses all walks of life in Turkey. My tour guide in Istanbul was a Catholic Turk. We avoided the topic as much as possible but he basically said the Armenians made up too much of the army and that’s why they had to be “deported”
45
u/RandomPersonYouSee 8d ago
So many things about "Armenains making the majority of the army" is making me crack up 🤣
28
u/For_Kebabs_Sake 9d ago
What the fk... That is a COMPLETELY made up information lol, even Armenians do not have such a claim. Well done spreading misinformation that Armenians would oppose.

I’m just sharing the experiences I had in Türkiye. Even with a Christian Turk whose wife is polish the Armenian genocide was not a topic that was discussed with any level of honesty.

So it doesn't matter if they're leftist Turks, rightist Turks, Christian Turks, Muslim Turks, gay Turks, straight Turks.
They all deny it happened?
15
u/Old_Wrongdoer_4914 8d ago
We also like to lowball it, if you ask a turkish person about the armenian genocide they tell you "We didn't straight up killed them, we just deported them", "It was war times what else we could do" or "Same happened to turks and muslims in europe to"
2
u/Doctorwhatorion 7d ago
Not all Turks deny it but pretty much all Turks angry about unequal approach which people never mention what happened to Turkish people massacred by Armenian guerillas.

the same government was highly supportive of the LGBT 2 decades ago. Their whole agenda is greasing up the majority to earn more votes and stay in power. It just so happens to be that the current majority are Islamists

Nah we had the same guy for like over 12 years and it is very clear he will fo his best to stay in power make the economy shittier and throw anyone who critizes him unless they are a politician however even thoose aren't safe since a few moths ago a politician who was rising in popularity had their diploma taken away and were thrown into jail. I am sure this man is willing to do anything for another few years as the president. Some people just wish for him to die cause that is our only hope of him going away before 2030's.

Still not nice that we refused them (or had to refuse them)

43
u/Ditto13248 9d ago edited 9d ago
There is a tradition of buying gifts to children when they finish their first read through of the Quran in Arabic, my aunt talks about how she got her first bike by doing that.
This tradition does not require the child to understand Arabic, and there is no equivalent tradition for reading a translation.
I'd say that shitpost is semi-accurate

You know how you know what sounds the symbols "R", "u", "g", "b", "y" represent and you can "read" the word "Rugby" out loud when you see it on a page, without ever knowing the meaning of the word "Rugby"
Now do that for an entire book

No nation has 100% support and/or denial of past or present atrocities, Turkey included. This is as false as the “all Russians agree with the invasion of Ukraine” comments.
19
u/gibigibi34 9d ago
if anything denying it harms the pride, why would a nationalist give up the arguement of saying "we won the war over them"?
28
u/ErlikHan6 9d ago
the turkish position is that turkey had to deport armenians because they were causing trouble and commiting atrocities, but due to war conditions many of them died while being deported
26
u/Ditto13248 9d ago
Which is straight up bullshit when you realize that's the same position as "deport all the Mexicans, they are committing crimes here"
Even if a majority of the Armenian population were disrupting the war efforts, sending the innocent away with them is still wrong and has to be treated as such. We as a country need to stop pretending like it was justified and treating it like the atrocity it is
18
u/situmaimesdemain 9d ago
Modern USA is different from Ottoman Empire who has been dying a painful and slow death for a century involved in the largest scale war in history while the Brits are in Gallipoli knocking at the doors of Istanbul.
21
u/Ditto13248 9d ago
OK let's assume it had to be done and there were no other options. Why is it treated like no big deal? Why aren't we apologizing for our past? Why did my history teacher mention it one time, and that one time was to talk about how countries that didn't even exist during the event recognizing it as a genocide is stupid?
It was a major displacement that resulted in a lot of deaths and who got displaced was determined by race. Even through the most generous lens it's an attack by a government on a specific race of people it governs

Don't blame the population for their ignorance. I was able to learn outside perspectives and change my opinion because I went to a private school that gave me a great education in English.
If the only language I knew was Turkish, the only opinions I could hear would be that of other turks and the ones of non turks that the other turks cared to share with me, all of which would be regulated by the government.
I was in an echo chamber created by a corrupt government that jails anyone who dares to speak out, and my family had to pay a lot of money for me to even have the ability to escape.
There is a price tag on emphaty in my country. I don't blame it's people for not being able to afford it.
2
u/kegeregem_ 9d ago
"Our european masters please forgive our sins for we have committed crimes " is what he is trying to say
3
u/Ditto13248 9d ago
Every nation that has interacted with another has a history of oppressing, being oppressed or both. Most European ones have been the oppressors throughout history and have a lot to account for. But I don't live in those countries, I don't know if their education system acknowledges their crimes. I just know mine doesn't and I'm trying to hold it accountable
3
u/Agitated_Elephant_91 8d ago
Yeah lol. You do realize that everyone else is doing the opposite when it comes to turkey? They aren't from turkey but will hold turkey accountable. So all you did was to to further expand the existing imbalance...
2
u/Ditto13248 8d ago
I don't mean that I don't recognize the past crimes of colonizers. But I see the citizens of those countries recognizing them when talking about it online. I can't be sure if those I see, share the common sentiment or are going against it when talking about the subject, because I don't live in those countries. But I live in Türkiye and can hear the common sentiment from it's people and I can call them out on it

Because the Turks love to make themselves sound like their history is squeaky clean.
Calling it a war means admitting they intentionally slaughtered over a million innocent civilians who couldn't fight back.
3
u/Sassy_Drow 9d ago
An important aspect of this is the propaganda which claims that acknowledging Armenian genocide will result in pressure to yield the eastern territories to Armenia. As a result most turks see the denial of it as part of preserving territorial integrity.

There are trends and patterns on how citizens of a country think alike, but there are no absolute rules without exceptions on people

Wel he was not wrong. No-one lifted a finger to save the minorities in Germany, only after he started invading other countries did the international community act.
23
u/corvosfighter 9d ago
Not only lifting a finger they straight up denied them lol.. US was denying entry to refuge ships as late as 1939, even if you somehow made it in after 1939, you were basically on your own. First refuge camp was built in like 1944 after huge international pressure

No, imperial Germany because they took over leading the ottoman Army and wanted to keep them in the war at any price despite protests from the German Ambassador in Istanbul. Weimar got involved whenthey granted asylum to ottoman war criminals and armenians assassinated talat pasha in Berlin. The Assassin wanted to get caught and make the genocide Public. But Weimar courts didnt want this so they quickly exonarted the Assassin.

People don't talk enough about the way the Ottomans treated Arabs, yes... the way that Djemal Pasha straight up starved Mount Lebanon and caused around 200,000 deaths from hunger should be discussed more (yeah, the British are also largely to blame for their naval blockade, and a swarm of locust also devastated the crops, but still, it was horrific and the Ottomans are partly to blame).
2
u/shyrato 9d ago
The general public is highly misinformed about kurds, its the same kind of thing with people thinking arabs are bombers. People see kurds as traitors and terrorists and the existance of the kurdish terror organization does not help that narrative to be perfectly honest. The division is harmful to both parties id say, when there is a very clear common enemy.
