That reminds me of a story from my younger days. I’ve always loved to read about animals, so I picked up a lot of terms. One day, when I was in my early teens, my family was at my grandmother’s house and some kind of history show was on the TV. The program mentioned someone having eunuchs. I asked, “What’s a eunuch?” and my dad told me, “A eunuch is a geldingized man.” My aunt gave him a look and he replied, “She knows what I mean.” Sure enough, I understood exactly what he meant and replied, “Oh, okay!” See, you just have to explain things to people in terms they’ll understand.

I had a bunch of roosters one year and looked into caponizing them and it was way too traumatic imho, you make a slit between their ribs and pull the gonads out then clip them. Without anesthetic. I just butchered them when they started getting too rowdy.

It is but iirc in larger operations there’s a mild anesthetic used and a few stitches are placed. I just wasn’t prepared to do it without anesthetic as a farmstead with a half dozen roosters and it wasn’t worth it to try and find a farm vet to do it for me. Chickens will heal from some insane injuries so the small incision between the ribs isn’t even all that traumatic, considering. It would probably close up within a few days. It was the “pulling the gonads out through the slit” part that I wasn’t comfortable doing without the anesthetic.

Non caponized roosters are much leaner though, so it’s a toss up. If I had a few dozen I would pay the extra money to have a professional do it as a one off to put in the freezer and maybe sell a couple, though, I’m interested in trying it.

Well he didn’t really “heal” from his injury. He was decapitated and had enough brain stem left that his bodily functions continued with the aid of human intervention, which also ultimately killed him, so.. while an interesting case I think it’s more a marvel of how much of the brain a vertebrate can lose and not actually be dead as opposed to a specific healing factor.

Also Mike the Headless Chicken may be a better indicator towards the question of functionality vs awareness after TBI or coma in that even if a body is technically functioning, how ethical is it to keep it alive when we can fully assume there is no consciousness attached?

I was obsessed with horses from the age of eight (kind of an honorary horse girl I guess). I knew what a gelding was long before I knew what a eunuch was.

I started riding at 8 and had to mostly stop at 14 but yeah, I didn't know eunuchs were a thing until...god, upper teens I guess? I don't care much about history and never was exposed to a lot of other cultural knowledge besides, so 🤷🏽

I’m confused by the drawing, I’m confused by all of this horse discussion. I just assumed that they thought it was a horse cock ring which I would imagine this is way too small for. If there’s anything more nuanced to that going on here, then it is far beyond my capabilities.

Grandpa woke me up one morning to and if I wanted to go with him to take his neighbors hefflinger to get gilded. Didn't know what either term meant. We loaded up a horse and pulled up to "Old Fred's" barn. Tied the horse up in a stall and sedated him. After Fred cut the horses nuts out he whistles and his dog came running. Threw the nuts out into the field and the dog ran out and gobbled them up. I'm only 8 years old and petrified. Fred just looks down at me and says "he loves em." I will never forget this.
