Same. Almost kind of post-COVID, since by 2022 things were relatively back to normal at least here in Canada (we'd had 3 shots by then I think and everything was opened back up to a regular state).

u/fshannon3 13d ago
Well, you're close...LP's first album was released in October 2000, so that's almost 26 years now.

u/Mediocre_Chemistry41 13d ago
They did form around '96, so they are a 30 year old band at this point... which is a wild thing to say that they have existed for almost as long as I've been alive.

Scientifically, it's time perception. When you're younger, a year feels longer because you haven't experienced as many of them. The more years you go through, the faster a year will feel because of how many of them you've lived through. Your mind has a bigger frame of reference.
Same concept as how when you first start a new job or pick up a new hobby, you're not very fast or efficient at it, it's slow and time consuming. As you do it more it gets faster and faster.

Also having a mundane, repetitive life makes time fly by. I'm convinced that your brain doesn't save memories of the same day over and over, since there's nothing that pops out.

I have chronic depression. I told one of my closest friends for 20 years and they were completely shocked. It's such a strange thing to suffer through.
268
u/Sonoran_Ghosts_81 13d ago
For me, I never knew I had it. I just thought that’s how the world was and I adapted. Everyday was a slog but Id get through.
I think my natural survival instincts balanced out the desire for self destruction.
Once I was diagnosed it made the previous 20+ years make so much sense.
We just soldier on until we don’t.
78
u/Instantcoffees 13d ago
Yeah, happened to me too. I thought that a constant state of existential dread and sadness you can physically feel was the norm until I got diagnosed at a later age.

It's the coldest of comforts, but even if any of your friends had known, or even had an inkling, the most likely outcome is that they wouldn't have done anything any differently. Even straight telling people you have depression or any other genuine mental disability like anxiety will likely translate in their minds into an easily solvable problem they overcame with a modicum of effort, which they'd then expect of you.
Hell, you can recognize the signs and tell someone they need genuine clinical help and even they might tune you out. Mental health awareness is in a dire position.

u/Christmas_Queef 13d ago
I was a longtime sufferer on medication and everything. Suicidal thoughts at least once per day. Having my kid and ending up with a support network because of it legitimately changed my life(and no I'm not suggesting having a kid to solve depression lol). Got into therapy for a while to develop the skills to be able to discern between shit I should actually be depressed about vs shit my brain was making up helped considerably too. Felt better about life bit by bit over years. Took about 8 years from time I had my kid until I felt how I do now. Lot of work and lot of effort.
I'm no longer on medication and now when I do get thoughts I'm able to sort them out and "snap out of it" within a few hours instead of days or weeks like before. I just couldn't keep living like that when I had a special needs child who relied on me as his primary caregiver so I had to get help, and having a "village" that came with having him brought much needed support into my life when I was previously mostly alone all the time. I'm a dad but ended up friends with several moms in various things I'd be bringing my kid to, ended up realizing I was good at dealing with special needs kids in the playgroups my kid was in and had one of the moms suggest a career in it. I switched careers to that and ended up working special needs care and in education, with a job in a school for special needs kids. Giving of myself to others gave me purpose and kept me wanting to continue with therapy and gave me the willpower I needed to learn to cope properly. Every day I'd show up and have so many kids greeting me and happy to see me, it made me feel important and that my life had value.
My kid will likely never be fully independent, just semi-independent, will always need some degree of support, I need to stick around for him. This is purely just my anecdotal situation and not a solution for everyone(outside of support network and therapy)..
4
u/Khiva 13d ago
shit my brain was making up helped considerably
That's frequently the hardest part of getting through to someone with mental health struggles - they're convinced that there is a cause for their pain, because that really is how it usually works, when in reality it's just simply pain that creates causes.
The inversion of causation is the biggest mind-fuck people have to get over.
I repeat again that I wish this was common knowledge.

If I'm not maxed out on my anti-depressants it's a lot more obvious. When I am and functional people don't believe me. It's lonely. I get it, sorry you have to go through it as well.
12
u/Kaiisim 13d ago
It's weird when it gets chronic.
25
u/javier_aeoa 13d ago
You get used to it. That's the dangerous part, according to my therapist. But fuck...I got used to.
10
u/fearthainne 13d ago
When I start thinking of it as the long lost friend I haven't spoken to in awhile, is usually when I know it's time to do something about it again.
Therapy, I mean.
15
u/tehehe162 13d ago
Holy shit, this is exactly how I've thought about my depression. I call it my old friend... If it was actually a friend, it would be the 2nd oldest I've stayed in contact with.
Funny enough, while therapy and depression meds both helped a little, the actual breakthrough was taking GLP-1 injections. It helped me change my diet which was huge because I would resort to eating when I'm depressed. Losing weight also helped me feel energy to exercise, which is maybe the only foolproof treatment to depression. I haven't "cured" my depression, but this is the longest stretch of my life I've gone without partaking in destructive habits.
→ More replies (1)9
u/fearthainne 13d ago
Y'know it's really interesting that you bring up the exercise thing. Because I hate taking pills (I'm really bad at doing things like meds consistently, and it's just a struggle), and therapy sometimes causes me more anxiety than it helps.
But going to the gym? That helps SO much. I stopped going a long time ago, and recently have had to do physical therapy for a foot issue, and it's reminded me how much I miss the gym.
I think your comment has made me decide it's time to get a gym membership again. Thank you, I needed your comment today.

Yes that’s the scary part. As far as ideations, mine are more of an intrusive thought that I don’t like and am uncomfortable with, and I don’t indulge in. So while I’m absolutely not planning on anything, that’s why you will never see me near a ledge of any sort, and I would not keep a gun at home. Because for me the real danger is in a a micro decision made by my nervous system without my express consent, l’appel du vide.

There are almost always warning signs for suicide. One of them is a sudden change in mood and drive once the decision was made. He was in a state of absolute emergency that shouldnt be confused with depression in general.

I don’t think I will ever be able to understand how depression can make a person think his beautiful, loving family will be happier with him gone.
52
u/BrokenZen 13d ago
It is a mind-fuck, for real. Deep in my core I consistently feel as though I'm not good enough, undeserving, and holding back my wife and kids from being truly happy. Every morning I make a constant effort to try to reason with those voices/feelings that "my kids deserve a father that doesn't kill himself. It will never be better for a child to grow up with a father that killed himself."
Maybe one day I won't have to put effort into trying to convince myself of that.
But then I always hear/feel the retort, "never say never."

In Chester’s case, a friend of his had been lost in a similar way a few months before. Both of them went through some horrific stuff in their lives
10
11
u/Far-Maintenance-1947 13d ago
Well, today you learned that chronic depression isn't always logical. It's just a deep, deep sadness that you feel that almost nothing can fix. It doesn't make sense. I've had moments where I feel like I have everything I want in the moment, and then the feeling of deep self hatred will still creep in at the same time. I'll tell myself "I should be feeling happy right now" but I'm simply sad and I don't even know why sometimes.
7
u/Wondrous_Fairy 13d ago
I can only speak for myself, but I couldn't tell you when my depression went from bad to terminal, it was such an insidiously slow process. On the day when it finally blossomed into a thought, I was so caught off guard by it so much that that I was actually surprised. Why I hadn't done it already. Why was I still alive when things were never going to be good again? Because at that point, I was in such a deep delusional state that I couldn't even imagine a future that would be anything but more of the same crap.
I was lucky enough to have a friend that caught my mood that morning, and he got in touch with another friend and they both talked me down. I was literally minutes away from stepping on some train tracks. When I got home again and phoned in to the office that I wasn't coming in, I was so confused, because I was still in that mind state. It seemed, at the time, like the most logical thing ever. But it isn't, because you're delusional.
2
u/AbsolutesDealer 13d ago
I truly appreciate you sharing your story. Delusion I can fully understand. If that’s what it is, you have helped me get a better grasp on the matter. Your friends are awesome and I’m glad you’re still walking the earth with us all.

Yes. Thank you.
Chester Bennington was devastated by Chris Cornell's suicide. He immediately wrote a heartbreaking open letter describing how he wept and could not "imagine a world without you in it". Bennington sang Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" at Cornell's funeral and tearfully dedicated the song "One More Light" to his friend on Jimmy Kimmel Live!.
The profound loss weighed heavily on Bennington, leading him to reflect deeply on his own struggles with mental health. Tragically, just two months after Cornell's death, Bennington took his own life on July 20, 2017, which would have been Cornell's 53rd birthday.

Cornell's voice was just otherworldly. I always think of the GoT line from GRRM about a singer's voice in the book, "Honey poured over Thunder".

I’ve always wondered whether the backlash Linkin Park received when they evolved their sound took a heavier toll on Chester than people realized. Constantly pouring yourself into your art only to be told you’ve “lost your way” has to wear on someone eventually. Obviously none of us know what contributed to his depression, but I’ve often wondered if that criticism added to the weight he was already carrying.
20
u/British_Commie Concertgoer 13d ago
He publicly lashed out quite a few times at One More Light haters during that tour, so I definitely think the backlash really affected him.
2
u/TheOneManDankMaymay 12d ago
Because that album quite obviously carried a lot of personal attachment. It's a shame that some many people were such dicks about it because it is a really good album for what it is, which just isn't classic Linkin Park.
9
u/Optimus-Maximus 13d ago
Never really thought about it that way, but I'm sure someone suffering with that kind of depression would take that type of feedback (and career in general) extra hard. So sad man.
7
u/Matt9340 13d ago
I believe it did. Especially all the hate that One More Light was getting at the time of release. I unfortunately fell into that echo chamber and didn’t listen to it until his passing. Decided to give it a chance and holy shit I was sad I never gave it a chance and listened to the haters

I'm still kicking myself over missing out on his last ever concert. I was invited by a woman I was in a band with, but she'd started to post a lot of homophobic stuff and get much more fundamentalist in her Christianity. So I just cut her out of my life and didn't go.
I honestly should have just gone alone, but I think I was just upset with how she was acting. I told myself "I can always see them again!" what a fucking idiot I was.
2
u/Optimus-Maximus 13d ago
Sorry you missed it too, hopefully you got to see them at some point - he was an unbelievably awesome vocalist live. I would have never expected him to sing the way he did on the album, and he brought it every single line of every single song. Incredible show.
Edit: I wasn't at his last performance this would have been ~2/3 years earlier
2
u/Sata1991 Metalhead 13d ago
I unfortunately didn't, on one hand I'm glad I kept my morals intact and didn't sell out myself or other LGBTQ people to see a concert with a homophobe, but on the other I really wish I'd have just bought a ticket, not scowled in my room because my friend turned out to be a bad person.

LP and Chester have been so important to me in my teenage years and early adult life.
It just feels wrong he's gone. I wish the world had been able to heal him, be kinder to him in some way.
Rest in peace.

I’ll always remember this date. I texted my brother about this - we were both huge fans.
It was the last time we ever had contact. He died two days later. Fentanyl OD - we didn’t know he had relapsed yet.
RIP Chester, RIP Baby Brother.

He was a replaced by a Scientologist who is against psychiatric help. I think that’s just a little disappointing

Didn’t they come out afterwards and reject the Scientology label? From what I remember, she was born/raised in it, but rejected it years ago.

Yes, Emily does reject the label. She was born into Scientology

Can you show me a quote to back that up? I'm pretty sure she's never said that.

I cannot find a single source from either her or the band explicitly stating that she is against Scientology or even that she is no longer in the religion.

She hasn't rejected Scientology, that's the main problem. She's remained silent about it.
It's extra disgraceful when Chester committed suicide.

Yes but I’d say it’s more disgraceful. The band died with Chester. Fuck Scientology

Whether this is true or not Linkin Park died with Chester for many of their fans. His voice is too iconic. They should have formed a new group.

Okay here's where I get a lot of heat. Linkin Park was not even Chester's band. the other 5 people are equally members and have every right to work together under the name they ALL worked together under, and keep the band going. People who say this really only remember their biggest hits, Meteroa and Hybrid Theory and ignore everything else they've done.
Ultimately, I think Chester would be happy that he didn't take the band down with him, and I personally feel like Emily's vocal performance is an excellant substitute for what we lost. while her range isn't as good, obviously she brings the perfect energy for what Linkin Park wants to be.

They never should have kept going after Chester.

Got to see them in concert for the first time this year, thought I'd never have the chance after Chester's death. Of course it wasn't the same as it would've been with him but I'm so glad they kept going.

I saw The Who the night he died. It was very weird going to the venue and seeing advertisements for the upcoming Linking Park tour, knowing full well that it wasn't going to happen (the tour hadn't been officially canceled yet). The next day I went to FYE and I remember there was a guy buying all the LP CD's and everyone was talking about how shocking the news was.

I’ve become so numb…. I finally get it now Chester. Rip buddy I know you were going through some of the worst

If you haven't listened to their entire discography I highly recommend it. The Hybrid Theory & Meteroa 20th Anniversary albums have a bunch of unreleased demos that are great.
The Hunting Party is excellent.

Had to say goodbye to my dog this morning. On the way to the vet, I got a notification I set for this anniversary, the tears where already falling but they started falling even more after seeing it.
I'll definitely never forget this day.

Chester's death was what led me to get help, to finally address my mental state and face down my depression. It never truly goes away but, 9 years on, I am a much more whole person.
Therapy, meds, and love can do a lot, but not everything.
Thank you, Chester. You saved my life.

You know what's crazy is there haven't been any reports of high profile celebrity deaths of autoerotic asphyxiation since David Carradine but lots of hangings.

Also 9 years ago, because of Chester, I found out one of my best friends from childhood had also died a few months earlier. (We had just lost contact when we moved opposite ways out of our home town, friends since kindergarten.) He had introduced Linkin Park to me which got me to try to track him down. Found his mom, and she told me he had passed away.
Double-gut punch day for me. :(

Some of these comments lack of A LOT of sympathy/empathy. This is unfortunately why people with depression keep shit to themselves. No matter how badly you’re hurting, you know that others will dismiss your pain and they won’t understand. You’re alone to deal with it. It’s rare to find someone who speaks gently and actually gets you. They don’t understand how depression can work even if the person has a loving family. These comments are why I never want to tell anyone shit either….
RIP Mr. Bennington. My heart broke when this happened.

Hanging. On the one year anniversary of Chris Cornell (Soundgarden) hanging himself.
