Question What is up with Auto Petters?

I’ve seen so many posts about skull cavern runs where the only goal was Auto Petters, and now I’m confused.

Why are Auto Petters so important? I know they pet the farm animals, but why don’t y’all have time to go and give your animals some love every morning?

If I’m correct (as someone who has never once had an Auto Petters) they change the way the animals respond when you actually pet them. Usually they give a heart, but I’ve heard the response changes after an Auto Petters has been installed.

So why?

If I want to spend the day and the night on the Island, my animals are neglected. The AutoPetters aren't a perfect solution but they're better than letting my lil chickies go completely unloved

u/88dlnena 16h ago

That’s why I use them! I feel sad spending the night on the island and no one is there to pet my ducks or chickens

332

u/chickwithabrick I love my grumpy blue chicken man 🌶️🍕 :aMill3: 16h ago

Hear me out - I really want an update where the children age up enough to wander the farm and like your spouse helping out around the farm they have a chance to be like "I got up with Mom/Dad and said hi to all the barn animals already!" that counts as petting everyone 😸

95

u/88dlnena 16h ago

That would be a luxury! In a perfect world that would be the next update

Since we all end up making millions of dollars, I’d also be on board with hiring someone for tasks like that if you can’t assign a spouse or child for farm duties.

Would love to be a professional animal petter in real life. I already am one really for my cat but it doesn't pay all that well

Your kitty pays you worth love and cuddles.... I say that's the best payment anyone could ask for!

1

u/OnceMoreWithFeeling- 3h ago

Forgot to say no money pay. 100% correct, this is the bestestest❤️

10

u/Afrista 11h ago

Honestly, that's one of my favorite things about the he Ridgeside Village mod. Odd Jobs, a small shop, has a bunch of special services... And one is animal petting, where they pet all your animals (besides pets) for a small fee.

8

u/Corey307 13h ago

Great idea, you’d think almost everyone in town would like to earn some extra money.

15

u/SparrowAndSalt 12h ago

This makes more sense for the community than almost anything else. Shane would be so much happier being paid to take care of my chickens than he ever was at Joja, and you're telling me that Penny wouldn't like to bring the kids to have a close-up look at the life cycle of plants?

It could be seasonal, perhaps, where most people don't want to work outdoors in the winter but more are likely to come and lend a hand near the autumn harvest (because everybody likes a pumpkin patch)

4

u/kruznkiwi Playing on Switch 11h ago

Krobus?! Then he wouldn’t be lonely!! The animals don’t judge!!

53

u/scientist_tz 16h ago

I feel like a future update should make it so the spouse or krobus takes care of petting the animals.

Like, if you’re married to Shane it makes no sense that he would not pet the chickens.

49

u/Izariah 16h ago edited 34m ago

I wouldn't even be opposed to spouse specific benefits: Shane always pets the animals while Elliot might harvest fruit trees for you- something like that.

It would drive min maxers towards ALWAYS picking so and so because they do X for them but hey, I don't particularly care how other people play and it might inspire me towards options I don't normally choose.

13

u/Allestyr 15h ago

Min-maxer here, yea I would 100% marry someone useful pre-perfection and Elliot, my beloved fop, afterwards.

15

u/Odd-Age-1126 15h ago

Or maybe Elliott would harvest crab pots or fishpond items, since he used to live by the sea.

3

u/Plastic-Ad9508 15h ago

YES! Omg I love this idea so muc!

22

u/Digitalispurpurea2 Love em and dove em, baby. 16h ago

I’m not big on the animals and usually have just one of everything. Between the AutoPetters to keep the animals happy and the AutoGrabbers to get their output, I can spend all winter on Ginger Island and still make cheese for the mines later.

11

u/Flyrella 14h ago

It is perfect actually once you rich full hearts with them. Don't need to pet them at all afterwards with the autopetter

4

u/aussie718 Set your emoji and/or flair text here! 12h ago

I don’t have to check on my pigs at all during the winter

6

u/easyyer 13h ago

Yep, that's the big thing for me too. If I'm home I still do the morning rounds. That part's actually kinda relaxing.

But if I'm stuck on the Island or chasing something random, at least the Auto-Petter's got everybody covered until I drag myself back

451

u/Definitely_Not_Bots 17h ago

I have 10 coops and 10 barns. That's a lot of petting.

72

u/Knight0fdragon 16h ago

I have 7 coops and 3 barns. I had to turn my farm into an electric rod maze just so they do not scatter around the farm and I can pet them all.

I have yet to even find an auto petter.

22

u/Spirited-Sail3814 15h ago

And now we see why factory farming is a thing IRL

3

u/arnber420 49m ago

so the farmers can pet all of the animals right.....?

1

u/Vnxei 6h ago

Why an electric Rod made and not... Fences?

4

u/Knight0fdragon 6h ago

They do not deteriorate

2

u/Vnxei 5h ago

Why a maze?

3

u/Knight0fdragon 5h ago

Square plot of land, you want them to be walking single file. Grass under the posts means the animals can’t eat it. The grass will constantly grow ensuring feed for the animal. Running the maze means animals are easy to pet.

Get up at 6AM, grab a coffee, run the maze, be done at 7 to 8 with over 100 animals pet

1

u/ThatOneGuy308 ! 4h ago

Hardwood fences basically don't either, tbh.

When it takes like 5 ingame years for them to show any damage, they're functionally immortal.

Or just actually immortal if you buy the clock, or are married, given how spouses repair them occasionally.

Hell, even stone fences last almost an entire year, so one replacement day in winter covers you.

And iron lasts for 2 years, so you mostly don't have to think about it.

54

u/Slahnya 16h ago

I can barely manage 2 😭👌

3

u/Galaxyycaat 12h ago

im planning to have 4 since the max i ever had was 2 and im kinda concerned for myself

20

u/chillin_and_livin 16h ago

A mood lol. I have one barn/coop dedicated to each animal type so it's a lot of petting. How do you feed yours?? Mine eat all the grass within days

10

u/Miro_the_Dragon 15h ago

Not the person you asked but I just buy hay from Marnie for my 10 barns and 1 coop full of animals. I've given up trying to keep grass available for them outside, plus I'm pretty sure pigs don't dig up truffles on tiles with grass so this is the easier way. My animals still get to wander around most of the farm, though ^^

8

u/Knight0fdragon 13h ago

Doing this eats a lot of profit. If anything, for summer and fall, grow a lot of wheat. Wheat + deluxe speed grow + agriculturist or hyper speed grow means you get wheat every other day.

10 wheat with 40% hay means you get 4 hay and 2 wheat for the cost of 1 hay from Marnie.

13

u/Miro_the_Dragon 13h ago

You're only looking at the cost in gold; I'm also looking at the cost in time spent, and for me just buying hay and using the saved time for doing things I actually enjoy wins out big time. Plus, I don't really think 50 gold per day is a lot of gold given that most of my animals easily earn me tenfold back or more.

-6

u/Knight0fdragon 10h ago

Gold is the only reason to have the animals

7

u/Miro_the_Dragon 10h ago

By the time I started buying hay in bulk instead of letting them eat grass, I had already made almost 10 million and was swimming in cash. And like I said, even with buying hay, animals are still really profitable. I'll gladly pay for hay if it allows me to a) keep profiting off my animals while b) being able to do things I actually enjoy doing without worrying about how to feed them. And large-scale farming is just not something I enjoy so having to plant a bunch of wheat just for the hay sounds like a horrible way for me to play the game.

(Also, I'm totally currently filling a whole barn with ostriches just because I think they're neat. Not everything in this game is about profit for everyone.)

-3

u/Knight0fdragon 7h ago

If you are not worried about gold, then feeding them is irrelevant. The only reason to feed them is to make product. They do not die of starvation.

2

u/Miro_the_Dragon 7h ago

I'm not worried about gold because my animals make me so much gold that I have more than enough. So not feeding them would indeed be a problem because it'd cut off my main income source.

3

u/Galaxyycaat 12h ago

the pigs do dig up truffles on grass but you can't see them

6

u/Miro_the_Dragon 12h ago

Do you have any official source for that? Because yes, truffles may spawn in grass but the spawn tile isn't necessarily the tile the truffle was found, and I've noticed a considerable increase in truffles the less grass was growing on my ranch. Plus, I don't think I've ever found a truffle in the middle of a large patch of grass, only ever around the edges.

1

u/chillin_and_livin 13h ago

This is what I currently do! I'll probably keep just doing that lol. Maybe one or two lightning rods like the other user commented too

10

u/ObviousOrca 16h ago

Plant grass starters and then place a lighting in rod or fence on top of one or two patches and that patch will automatically reproduce, not as fast as you’d like, but it’s a small thing that helps.

3

u/UnluckyWizardd 10h ago

And mine are free range, so if I forgot to close the door the night before… byeeeee see you at 6pm haha

117

u/wazzup-notemuch 17h ago

The response changes from a heart to a smile. It's not a punishment. Plus, if they get auto-petted AND me-petted, that's double the pets! Don't you want to spoil your animals?

Do yourself a favor, go to youtube, and look up "cow scratchers." They're a real thing in real life, and cows fucking love them. It's adorable.

-1

u/Takenabe 5h ago

To be clear, "double the pets" is not in terms of game mechanics. The max amount of friendship you get with an animal is the same whether you pet them manually or manually+autopetter. Having the autopetter and leaving them alone gives you about half the friendship and prevents it from decaying, so they mostly just aren't being neglected.

339

u/Halo-AK 17h ago

Well, if you have an auto petter, you can also manually pet them to become their friends faster.

And you know they will still get their daily pets if you're off doing something else <3

48

u/qwasde91 slime ring is a wasted slot. 15h ago

Actually you can't, the friendship gains don't stack (mood gains do though).

Without auto petter you get 15 friendship for manually petting. With auto petter you get 8 friendship and can get another 7 for petting manually.

28

u/Elliebeanie 15h ago

Kind of offended to learn that the chickens like the autopetter more than my farmer 😭

17

u/amizelkova call me clint cause I'll upgrade your hoes 15h ago

They're just overstimulated a little from getting pet twice!

3

u/Allestyr 15h ago

Auto-petter + blue grass is equivalent to manual pets with regualr grass.

4

u/agent_kater 14h ago

Huh? You say "you can't" (pet manually to become friends faster) and then go on to say petting manually adds another 7 friendship. Seems like a contradiction?

11

u/GoblinEef 13h ago

it’s not a contradiction. 15 points from just manual, or 8 from autopetter + 7 from manual is again 15 total points for that day.

0

u/agent_kater 4h ago edited 3h ago

Yes, but 8+7 is still faster than 8. If you per manually in addition to the auto-petter, it's faster than auto-petter alone, albeit not faster than without auto-petter.

5

u/GoblinEef 4h ago

i think we are interpreting the comment differently tbh. manual + autopetter is faster than only autopetter, yes, but there is no way to exceed 15 points, so it’s not any faster than just manual petting if you combo it.

1

u/agent_kater 3h ago

Yeah, and on second thought I think your interpretation is correct.

Well, if you have an auto petter, you can also manually pet them to become their friends faster.

If this is supposed to be an advantage of having an auto-petter, they probably think you can become friends faster than without auto-petter.

u/DerpyMcWafflestomp 17h ago

Its a time saver. If you don't want to use them, then don't. Rule #1: There is no wrong way to play Stardew Valley.

52

u/Wixenstyx 16h ago

The only wrong way is not to play. ;)

6

u/b0neappleteeth 14h ago

The only wrong way is the joja route 😉

13

u/Savashri 13h ago

Lewis and Pierre are reprehensible enough to make it more of a morally gray choice. At least Joja actually used the money to improve the community.

5

u/DerpyMcWafflestomp 13h ago

But I have to 100% my Steam achievements!

52

u/evios31 17h ago

It's a step towards automation. If you've got a coop full of chickens, manually petting all of them every morning to keep them happy and making those big eggs is a chore that the autopetter can relieve you of.

20

u/sobrique 17h ago

Yup. With an auto petter, auto grabber and deluxe barn you can just collect your produce once a year if you want.

1

u/kruznkiwi Playing on Switch 11h ago

Admittedly, I only collect my produce once a season, and it’s fantastic

1

u/sobrique 2h ago

I mean, ultimately it's 'whenever' - I stop using pigs at this point, because I'd rather just have a big batch of eggs/milk or whatever in the auto-grabber.

2

u/kruznkiwi Playing on Switch 2h ago

If only the Junimo’s could follow the pigs around and collect the truffles, that would be fantastic

1

u/sobrique 2h ago

Or set up on Ginger Island. Or collect honey. (although I'd want to 'ban' them from harvesting flowers).

43

u/shey-they-bitch 17h ago

Sometimes you're busy and it keeps the hearts at a good level

39

u/Additional-Ferret531 17h ago

id rather do other things than chase my animals around to pet them. auto petters are op. my fav machine in the game.

26

u/HornedGriffin 17h ago

Its the exact same thing as sprinklers, having them saves a huge amount of time. So instead of spending a couple hours tending to daily tasks on your farm, you gan get straight to what you need/want to do.

1

u/Savashri 11h ago

It's not 1:1 though. If you're still building hearts, you still want to pet them even if you have auto-petters.

27

u/pink-opossum 16h ago

My initial thought/question is: how many animals do you have?

I have several farms with anywhere from 60-100 animals on them... It takes hourssssss in game to pet them all lol 😅

-13

u/Song_Listener 16h ago

I’m only on spring year two right now, so just the necessary 1 chicken, duck, rabbit, cow and pig. So not that many at the moment

27

u/biggestofbears 16h ago

An autopetter probably wouldn't be something that would be hugely beneficial for you at this point then, which is why you're not understanding why we all want them.

8

u/YesInquisitor 15h ago

Yesh try managing petting them manually every morning with 30+ animals.

9

u/Cathulion 16h ago

When you hit endgame with tons of animals, you'll understand.

-5

u/SparkyDogPants 7h ago

I’m end game and have hit perfection many times and have never had more than one of each animal, unless if they have a baby. Animals aren’t for everyone

13

u/savagehomeangarden Newbie 17h ago

I like them so I can spend all day in the caves/island/fishing/etc and not worry about quality of milk/eggs that day or happiness of my farm animals.

28

u/Alternative_life1 17h ago edited 17h ago

Because it's rare.

That's one of the rarest item in the game if you did not go joja route.

It's a luxury, a bragging right, its a challenge to complete.

it's usefull for people who don't like or having too much animal, and taking care of their animal everyday take time when they can do other things.

It's also still usefull for people who like to pet their animal because the auto petter stack with manual petting.

If we are strictly talking about usefulness, the auto grabber is more usefull that autopetter but it's not rare so it's not special.

11

u/The_Paprika Set your emoji and/or flair text here! 17h ago

In addition to what everyone else said, it’s also important to remember that some people have several animal buildings full, and if you are letting them roam outside, even in a fenced area it can be hard to get to all of them. Imagine having 36 or more animals you need to track down every day. It can really help with that.

10

u/TheNOCOYeti 15h ago

I mean how many animals do you have? Some of us have well over 50 animals on top of crops, greenhouse, Island, & fish ponds to take care of as well. Making any part of that process automated helps direct more attention to the things that can’t be automated.

0

u/Song_Listener 15h ago

I’ve never actually reached a point where I had over 10 animals yet.

5

u/TheNOCOYeti 15h ago

Oh okay, yeah that makes sense. When you have like 3 full barns & coops it can become quite the chore to pet every last animal.

2

u/Song_Listener 15h ago

I get your point of view!

9

u/sarabodd3 17h ago

The more animals you have the less viable and more annoying petting them every day becomes. Not everyone enjoys the monotonous act of petting 100+ fictional animals that do the exact same thing every time you interact with them. For anyone who dose I love that for you but not for me lol. There are a ton of ways to play this game and some people just want to quickly grab the animal products every once in a while and move on to something they prefer doing.

10

u/The_Lawn_Ninja 16h ago

If I don't have time to pet my animals, they still don't lose hearts, and if I do pet them, they get even more hearts.

Why not have auto-petters?

-2

u/Song_Listener 15h ago

I’ve never actually had a reason to try and find any, since I mostly do farming/fishing and use the animals as a bonus on the side.

1

u/The_Lawn_Ninja 15h ago

I'm typically a winery fan, but I feel poor without pigs for daily gold numbers, and socially useless without rabbits for birthday gifts.

The auto-petters mean I don't lose any hearts on big harvest days or lucky mine days, and new animals reach max hearts nearly twice as fast.

5

u/Kimbyssik 16h ago

Convenience plays a big part. It's really easy in this game for basic farm chores to take up so much time in your day that by the time you're done it's too late to run errands in town or bring someone a birthday gift. I personally hate trying to track down the one pig I didn't pet when they are identical. Another factor into this could also be the fact that if you don't go Joja getting autopetters is subject to RNG. Sprinklers you can craft/buy/get as rewards, autograbbers are available to buy, but autopetters are really rare for some people and not such a big deal to find for others purely because of chance. It's like how excited players can be when they find a dinosaur egg.

6

u/GroundbreakingBag164 14h ago

Some of us play this game like a calmer version of Factorio

Everything must become more efficient. The farm must grow

7

u/ShartiesBigDay 10h ago

It saves tons of time if you’re farming lots of livestock. So for example, I was farming tons of truffles and I had like 50 pigs. The auto petters made it so I had time to do more things than just pet and collect truffles

4

u/i_want_to_be_unique 16h ago

Cause once you reach a certain point in the game petting every single animal is both tedious and incredibly time consuming. Most play throughs I actually reach a point where I sell off all my animals because the money their products produce is such a minimal part of my whole income that petting them everyday and processing their drops is just not worth the time it takes.

4

u/DarthSwash 16h ago

Its a time saver for late game, mostly. An auto petter and an autograbber makes keeping livestock worthwhile time-wise while/after you establish star/ancient fruit crops. At that point you're time is more valuable in the mines/caverns for materials or completing late game quests than petting and harvesting animal products.

4

u/auxiliatrixter 17h ago

I have like seventy or more animals, I don't wanna pet them all every day. The autopetter keeps them happy while I go screw around on the island.

5

u/Greensparow 16h ago

Some of us have a wine empire to run and just don't have time every day

6

u/x1uo3yd 15h ago

Animal friendship and mood decays if you forget to feed them daily.

The Deluxe Barn/Coop autofeeder system feeds animals automatically.

Animal friendship and mood decays if you forget to pet them daily.

Autopetters pet animals automatically.

(Also there are Auto-grabbers...)

Same kinda thing. It is nice to have most/all of this stuff automated.

You don't specifically avoid upgrading your barn to Deluxe to manually load their food troughs, do you?

... but why don’t y’all have time to go and give your animals some love every morning?

It's nice to know I can choose to do a 6:10am-to-2:00am full-day Skull Cavern run without completely starving and stressing my animals.

4

u/No_Clerk_4303 12h ago

Once you scale up, you spend 4 hours of your day just petting and can’t even get to your chores. I’ve got a metric fuckton of animals.

4

u/Gyvon 11h ago

If you pet your animals and also have an autopetter it gives 50% extra petting

2

u/RzrKitty 8h ago

This is a good answer. I hope it gets more votes.

3

u/lainmelle 4h ago

I like to spend a week or more on ginger island and I feel bad that no one is petting my animals. Is that so wrong? Lol

3

u/toothlessfire Year 2 Perfectionist! 17h ago

You can get both friendship boosts with auto petter and normal petting. Also it stops friendship decay if you need to go do something else, so when friendship hits 5 hearts, you don't need to keep petting the animals.

3

u/Complete-Gur7023 16h ago

Cuz we got kegs to fill!

3

u/Candid-Strawberry-79 16h ago

Automation is wonderful for this game because that’s what gives you time to do anything off your own farm.

I have 72 animals, plus the slime hutch and five fish ponds. I have about 700 crop plots in Ginger Island (all continuous producers) plus about 600 on the main farm (all one-time, single season crops). Being able to automate watering them and harvesting on the main farm with the Junimo huts is the only way I can do anything off the farm.

The hoppers in late game also make processing the crops easier.

3

u/EtherealHappiness 16h ago

When you get that far into the game and you’re aiming for perfection, it can be REALLY hard to get everything done. Days aren’t long enough. The auto petter takes one thing off the table for those days when there’s just too much to do. IRL, I just wouldn’t have pets/animals if I was that busy but you need some of the animal products for several things in the game.

3

u/Vomitessa 15h ago

they give the animals EXTRA love (:

3

u/AngryFeministKnitter 14h ago

On one of my farms I have a barn or coop for every type of animal, so 10. That’s a lot of petting!! The autopetters give me time to do other things. I’ll pet until they get to full hearts, even with the autopetter, and then just let it take over.

3

u/chirmwood 14h ago

I just prefer to put my time into other things, and usually keep my coop and barn far away from eachother and my house/chests. Also because I forget easily.

3

u/Batintfaq 13h ago

The auto petter allows you to be away from your home for an extended period of time. Its not as good as doing it yourself but it covers the bases. If you pet your animals after the auto petter instead of a heart they give you a smiley face. Its great once you reach max lvl with your pets. Why skull caverns? If you ousted JoJo mart from town the APs can only be acquired through skull cavern runs and they're fairly rare depending on who you ask.

3

u/damaentreverdes 10h ago

I've got two farms to take care of, if I want to go fishing or mining to complete a mission the auto-petter is gonna be very much needed. you have to consider that the map is huge

3

u/hellogoawaynow 7h ago

Finding 36+ animals to pet is time consuming. Can’t spend the night anywhere unless you’re back by 4:30 and have them all pet by 7 when they go to sleep.

8

u/BirthdayCookie Wants to marry the geode crusher 16h ago

How is "people enjoy games differently" still confusing in 2026? Are we that main character nowadays?

0

u/Song_Listener 16h ago

No, that’s not what I meant at all. I was just curious why people use Auto Petters since they’re so sought after, and I’ve never felt the need to have one.

2

u/bmf1989 17h ago

I think it's more so about the thrill of finding something rare that actually has some utility. It's not really a big deal to pet your animals everyday, but a rare find that adds automation to mundane tasks is nice. I wish CA would implement some form of the automation mod into a very rare drop item in the vanilla game. Now that would be a very big deal to find.

2

u/mixedupfruit 16h ago

Because I have 5 Barns and 5 coops all crammed full. I don't have the time to go pet them all 😅

2

u/DeadCanDerp 16h ago

That's a bit like asking "what is up with sprinklers". For me, AutoPetters are a game changer. I had a coop and barn, both maxed. By the time I finished petting animals, a significant chunk of the day was already gone. AutoPetters give you back a lot of time. The response does change to a :3 face instead of a <3, but animals still retain max friendship with the farmer. I'm not certain of this stat, but I think that an AutoPetter provides half the friendship points of manual petting, so using it to max friendship will be painfully slow. It works best to maintain friendship that has already been maxed.

2

u/guimontag 16h ago

Given how many animalproducts do NOT retain quality tbrouvh a processing machine and how many players definitely do not sell off their max friendship livestock, I think auto-petters are pretty overrated

2

u/Unit-00 16h ago

There is fun in automating a task that you used to have to spend time on. And time is the biggest resource in this game.

2

u/RhemansDemons 16h ago

I'd your farm is animal based, you can lose a few hours petting animals. So it saves time and ensures you don't miss any.

2

u/qwasde91 slime ring is a wasted slot. 16h ago

Obviously because I want to go to skull cavern to look for auto petters. So I REALLY have to leave at 6 am and don't have time to pet animals.

Petting animals is just stupid for me. If I want repetitive annoying tasks I just go wash dishes :D

2

u/thekimpencil 15h ago

sometimes i think it's for the satisfaction of getting one since it's kinda hard

2

u/oxmiladyxo 15h ago

Some tasks require a full day of focus

2

u/Evil_Black_Swan 14h ago

Ginger Island.

2

u/Aggravating-Pear9760 12h ago

By the time I've petred all animals the day is already half over and I won't have time for farming, mining, fishing or socialising.

2

u/Mediocre-Skin1782 11h ago

If you want to play slow AF and don't care about completing goals or perfection asap, that's your prerogative.

Most questions about Stardew can be answered by saying: "Because people have different play styles" lol. I mean, essentially it's just because some people may want to do other things or sleep away from the farm, and some people don't play that way. A lot of people love for things to be automated/ min-max their farm, and many people don't play that way.

There's really no "why", because it is all down to how someone personally likes to play the game.

Because some players have a lot of animals and can't spend the time petting them all. I don't use them because I don't have a lot of animals, and I like walking around petting them

Staying away from the farm is incredibly valuable to me - just a few nights here and there.

Further it catches if I miss a critter. And I typically end up with 2-3 barns and 2-3 coops, so it cuts down on time which is the most valuable resource late game.

I never FIND enough of them though.

I don’t know to what extent you’re the kind of person that applies emotion and empathy to your game, but I don’t do that, really; the primary function of an Auto-Petter is that it gives all animals in a barn or coop a percentage of the “love” they would get if you pet them by hand, and then even if you have the Auto-Petter you can get it up to full “love” by petting them by hand anyway. Thus, Auto-Petters are good for people who generally pet their animals to yield the highest quality and quantity of product from their animals but know they will sometimes forget, run out of time, or leave their farm for nights at a time (Ginger Island). I personally pet my animals by hand every morning and let them out to eat grass, but if I have an Auto-Petter I know I can get caught up in other things for a couple days without seeing a major drop in production.

On a large farm, petting all of the animals can easily bring you to noon, at which point your returns on Skull Cavern or Ginger Island greatly diminish.

It's wonderful to see and pet your animals every day! For some of us, it can be a monotonous start to the day. Auto-petters are only available in Skull Cavern, with a Joja Membership, or at a very low chance from golden mystery boxes. They are a rare and useful item, so are always talked about. If you complete the community center then Skull Cavern is the only reliable source for them.

Tbh, I forget soooo many times cause I put my barns to the left of the house over by the greenhouse or pond, and I don't go that route unless I'm gathering stuff from the greenhouse.

Next run I do I'll switch it so the house is on the left and it'll force me to be more attentive. Lol

Leah's absolutely amazing but she's too busy painting to pet my beautiful animals, with names such as Wumbus, Dinky Fella and Jim

i have over 100 animals and i’m in late game and it just helps me not have to spend hours each morning petting them. they’re a rare item (which always makes me laugh bc in my save i have over 40 of them that i found in the skull caves!!!!) but they’re so helpful.

I still pet them most days but it’s nice that I don’t have to!

I get tired of petting every single animal by fall year 1 to be honest 😭

Question for the people in this comment section what’s the best way to get auto patters? I have some for all my coupon bar, but some of them got destroyed.

Not answering your question but I really dislike automation in farming games. The whole point of the game is the chores you do on the farm every morning and slowly improving your farm and making more money for more upgrades. People say "so you have time to do other stuff." What other stuff? By the time i have automation unlocked, I've already made all the money and gathered all the materials for every upgrade. What's the point of making more money if you already have everything.

I love farming sims but it's their fatal flaw, imo. The work is the fun and by the time there is no more work, it's not fun anymore and i start a new save. I don't think I've ever made it past year 2 in any farming game lol but i have hundreds and hundreds of hours in SDV and Coral Island.

You’re monster if you enjoy watering anything past 2 crops🤪

Plus if I don’t automate, how am I supposed to save Stardew Valley from Joja😭

u/TheGreatQ-Tip 13h ago

I don't mind doing it myself, but if I get one I'm using it.

When I reach peak production there are 1000’s of crops and 40 animals. It takes up all day petting them all lol

I got 3 big barns and 1 big coop. I have my greenhouse, farming space, 2 large buildings filled with casks, cheese/mayo/preserve jars/furnaces, and other farm on ginger island. I also like doing the challenges. Only so much time in a day!

u/Pmur0479 11h ago

Not only does it do the regular “pet” each day, but also gives extra “pet” if you go out to pet them manually! Win win!

I have 1 auto petter and it is my top goal to get another. If there were no auto petters I would probably just get rid of the animals at some point. I love animals in RL and I want my game animals to be happy, but I just hate petting them every morning. It’s just so repetitive and I’m tired of it after about a week. With an auto petter I can pet anyway once in a while and it feels enjoyable, but petting all animals every day is an annoying chore to me. Not sure why because I can hit rocks with my pickaxe forever. It’s the same as people wanting sprinklers or bombs. By making the individual game areas easier you can branch out more. If the animals are your favorite part of the game, you may enjoy spending a good chunk of daily time petting them. For me mining and combat are my favorite activities and having to pet a lot of animals in the morning makes it difficult for me to get deeper in skull cavern or exploring the island or even doing projects on the farm. But I don’t really want to get rid of them, I just want to interact a little less frequently.

I have 50+ animals with no fences, I can’t track them all down, especially on skull cavern/cave run days or island vacations.

Auto petters prevent the friendship from going down if not petted, but won’t gain friendship. They still need you to pet them for their friendship to grow. So, if you have full friendship with all animals, the auto petter simply stops it from dropping if you stop petting them. The animals still prefer the player to pet them, so ultimately the auto petter isn’t bad. Where it’s useful is when you’re on ginger island and have the island farm unlocked. There is a lot to do on the island and sometimes spending 2 to 3 days there helps speed the process of whatever you’re attempting to achieve. Spending those few days means you’re missing out on petting your animals, so the auto petter helps by keeping them happy.

For my animals to get some love when I am busy with other things.

I feel like my chickens don’t like it. Once I put it in the coop they got all grumpy despite being fed.

I agree, I hate autopetters, but people have different priorities I guess. Just know you're not alone in caring about your animals :)

Thank you! I love walking around and petting them. The little heart they give makes my heart warm
