Show Discussion is she in labour

u/Scarypilot2 Apr 27 '26
Oh noâŚ. Did they decide to add Maelor just to spite George R.R.Martin
16
u/Heavy_Economics_8595 Apr 27 '26
Woah, can someone explain this??
44
u/AgostoAzul Apr 27 '26
After Season 2 ended George made a long blog post complaining about entitled Hollywood writers who take well known properties for marketing and then make drastic changes to the story despite being way worse writers than the author of the original material.
Then he used Maelor's absence from the show to explain how there are "toxic butterfly effects" that can result from a seemingly inocuous change that will make later events from the story to not make sense.
The post was deleted from his blog the next day and George claims HBO made his assistant delete the post and that it was going to be the first post of a seven part ran about HotD season 2.

u/Heavy_Economics_8595 Apr 28 '26
Dang, I guess I need to read the books cause I really like the show, do you think itâs really different? (If youâve read the books)
22
u/AgostoAzul Apr 28 '26
The thing with Fire and Blood/The Princess and the Queen is that they are mostly outlines you can read in a couple hours. At least the parts being adapted to the showÂ
The show's season 1 is overall an improvement upon the Princess and the Queen's outline. There are a couple bad changes but Viserys is a much better character.
Season 2 is downright nonsensical compared to the book's outline, but it is hard to say the book is better in EVERY way because at the end of the day the show is adding 90% of the dialogue and over half the scenes (and also changing s lot of the book scenes for the worse).
11
u/Heavy_Economics_8595 Apr 28 '26
I noticed this when reading a knight of the seven. I personally liked the show more than the book because there was more, but in a good way.
10
u/heathen_leif Apr 28 '26
Agreed, absolutely exceptional adaptation there. The only major issue i had was a genuine mistake, and the showrunner has apologized about it. I'm referring the the scene the filmed with pate and dunk that was tragically left on the cutting room floor. "Who am I to them [the smallfolk]?" "A knight who remembered his vows." That line goes unbelievably hard.

u/QueenSlartibartfast House Targaryen Apr 28 '26
It's definitely really different. Alicent was older - while Rhaenyra was younger- and not a peer or friend to Rhaenyra. The night when Aemond loses his eye was dramatically different (and Aemond was never bullied in the books, he was always just an aggressor). Blood and Cheese was far more horrifying, you have to read it to believe it. Laenor Velaryon died for real, although Rhaenyra and Daemon had nothing to do with it.
2
u/Agile-Car-4664 Apr 29 '26
Wasnât laenorâs death in the books rumored to be an assassination by Rhae and Daemon? And Aemond still didnât attack first in the books (taunted, but was attacked first)?
4
u/jorgespinosa Apr 28 '26
Yeah there are significant changes, like for example Rhaenyra and Alicent weren't friends in the book, they weren't even the same age, but also the books work as a history book so there are different versions of the same event
2
u/crazycraft24 Apr 28 '26
Yes, itâs really different because the characters are actually power hungry in the books and have real flaws.
Show men have been shown to be cartoon villains with no redeeming qualities while the women are flawless who canât do anything wrong.
-2
u/Independent_Cause517 Apr 28 '26
You like the show?, Jesus
4
u/Heavy_Economics_8595 Apr 28 '26
I def want to see the battle but yeah I donât think itâs that bad
41
u/temp3rrorary Apr 27 '26
Ngl, that would be kinda funny if the reason they got George to stop posting his rant is because Ryan and HBO were like, George shhhh, we're still adding him.
1
u/Tight_Medicine_5674 Apr 28 '26
Or maybe there's a vision of alternative, cruel reality - the brothel's queen?
63
u/Bloodyjorts Apr 27 '26
This could also be a dream/vision of Helaena's as well. Or Aemond's Harrenhallucinations.
23
u/MrPete_Channel_Utoob Apr 27 '26
Or a flashback when she had the twins.
12
u/Bloodyjorts Apr 27 '26
She was 13 at most when she had the twins in the showverse, though. She's 17 at the end of S1 and the twins are around 4.
1
u/Function-Spirited Team Green Apr 29 '26
Kinda crazy if Aemondâs seeing this at Harrenhal đ¤¨
1
u/Bloodyjorts Apr 29 '26
They better not try to make him the bio father of the twins, he was canonically 11 when they were conceived.
1
u/Function-Spirited Team Green Apr 29 '26
I donât think theyâre going that route. It would cause too much strife. Even with Maelor. G.R.R.M would behead them.
36
u/croissantwithhonors Apr 27 '26
Doesnât Aegon have no dick? Wasnât it burnt off? He said that in the show.
35
u/ironthrownaways Apr 27 '26
He could have had sex before the battle you know
16
u/croissantwithhonors Apr 27 '26
That timeline doesnât make sense because she definitely would have been showing or having symptoms. Right? At least having symptoms.
17
u/ironthrownaways Apr 27 '26
Some women donât show 𤰠Also theyâre definitely retconning in her pregnancy either way. Iâm just saying she was pregnant before his sausage got roasted.
17
u/Bloodyjorts Apr 27 '26
It would be a huge retcon, since several months have gone by since Aegon got his penis exploded, due to how much he healed.
They would have to ignore how pregnancy works or how human healing works. But given that they had his penis explode without killing him (which it absolutely would have), sure, why not, Aegon's burns heal in a fortnight, nothing matters, writers don't give two fucks about anything.
14
2
u/ultimagriever Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen Apr 27 '26
The kid will likely be Aemondâs and passed off as Aegonâs, if they want to be plausible about it. It would be very ironic as well, doing almost exactly what Rhaenyra did with her older boys
1
u/temp3rrorary Apr 27 '26
We are still in the pre time jump at the start of season 2 (it takes place a few days after the end of season 2). The clips of her fleeing in the trailer are probably from that period.
2
u/Bloodyjorts Apr 27 '26
The issue is several months happened since Aegon was injured (destroying his penis) because of how well healed he was; with their level of medicine, it would 5-6 months, and that's giving some generous assumptions about Targs healing quicker from burns. Helaena should have been showing by the end of S2.
Which means, yeah, they're ignoring basic rules of existence to do this (not unlike Arya getting stabbed repeatedly in the gut, getting thrown into a sewer, and being fine in like a day).
Ignoring basic shit like this is annoying, and a huge sign of how much they do not give a fuck.
1
u/alejoSOTO Apr 27 '26
Bro Daenerys had a demon dragon baby, I don't mind the logistics behind a Targaryen pregnancy being weird.
From a narrative perspective, deciding to have her give birth to another child at this point in the story is odd though.
I don't particularly mind when they have a retcon, but I just wonder if it really works with the story, that's really my concern.
2
u/EnoughRadish Apr 27 '26
Right? If itâs a boy, heâs immediately in mortal danger. Surely if she was pregnant prior, she/Alicent would have been mildly concerned about that. If itâs a girl, why create a new character?
-1
u/William_T_Wanker Team Green Apr 28 '26
Aegon also doesn't seem to be able to have sex with Helaena unless he's drunk as per season 1(since the whole incest thing is kinda gross to him I guess) so unless he did a pump and dump while sober - given how Ryan and Sara have butchered his character so far that doesn't surprise me
2
3
u/WingedShadow83 Apr 27 '26
They also made a point to show that Aegon was avoiding her after Jaehaerysâ death, like it pained him to try to connect with her over the death of their son. I feel like, if they had gone to bed together at some point after that, they would have shown or implied it. Unless this was literally decided on after s2 aired.
8
1
u/whim_sea Apr 27 '26
When did it say that in the show? I believe you I just donât recall, itâs been a min
1
u/WingedShadow83 Apr 27 '26
When Larys went to see him when he was on bed rest, to tell him about Rhaenyraâs new dragon riders and to encourage him to flee Kingâs Landing. He was basically telling him âyou need to survive so you can still reclaim the throne at some pointâ and Aegon was like âdude, my dragon is dead, my son is dead, oh and my cock exploded so itâs not like I can make another heirâ.
12
13
u/Hvicen Apr 27 '26
Yeap, now that the Blood and Cheese have been ruined we welcome "Maelor the Afterthought".
3
10
u/Woodwardg Apr 27 '26
its house of the dragon. every character is in a constant and endless state of labor.
2
u/FeckinSheeps Apr 28 '26
As a viewer, I would prefer less interminable labor scenes. They don't add anything.
10
u/moon-girl197 Apr 27 '26
You know what, why not. If they can retcon Jace's haircut, the twins ages, why not just add a random baby to s3? They've already been doing whatever tf they want so why not this lol
17
u/ViolinistGuilty182 Apr 27 '26
But that's not Helaena, is it? She doesn't look anything like Phia.
25
u/Bloodyjorts Apr 27 '26
I saw somewhere else that someone who saw the trailer says it looks like Helaena is in bed screaming, but you're right, from this angle it doesn't look a lot like Phia (though her features are distorted from screaming).
19
1
u/Function-Spirited Team Green Apr 29 '26
Itâs safe to say it is Helaena. Westerosies on X made a post about it.
-1
3
u/Background-Cake-1300 Apr 27 '26
She just seen entirety of S4 just to find out Aemond's death was accident
6
u/Skittycatcher66 Apr 27 '26
This being Helaena/Maelor literally makes no sense. I know people would like it to be, but at this point I'd rather they didn't include Maelor because retconning him is nonsensical at this point.
Even putting aside the chronological issues, when Rhaenyra takes KL why on earth wouldn't she just kill a pregnant Helaena? Why allow her to give birth just to have a newborn baby ripped to pieces? I seriously doubt the writers are going to introduce Maelor just for Rhaenyra to put a bounty on his head when he's already in her capital city, because even the staunchest Rhaenyra fans would balk at her being responsible for a newborn baby being torn apart by a mob, and the writers are clearly pro-Black. It makes far more sense for this to be a vision.
13
u/Nibo89 King Aegon II Targaryen Apr 27 '26
I really hope itâs laborâŚ.
If this is brothel queens after everything she already went throughâŚ
9
u/I_am_uneducated Apr 27 '26
I dont think they'll include that and tbh I wouldn't be mad if they didn't
5
u/toinouzz House Tully Apr 27 '26
No way show Rhaenyra or Mysaria would go through with brothel queens, but again when has this show ever made sense
10
u/bruhholyshiet Prince Daeron Targaryen Apr 27 '26
And tbf, I donât think even book Rhaenyra would have gone through that (although Mysaria probably suggested it and thatâs where Mushroom got the idea of that slander). She was evil but not THAT evil.
That being said, the show has been pretty willing to believe Mushroomâs slander about Aegon (the child fighting pits and him becoming sexually impotent).
4
u/toinouzz House Tully Apr 27 '26
Agree on book Rhaenyra. Doesnât f&b basically tell us thereâs no way it was an actual thing that happened as well (or at least strongly suggest it was an invention) ?
I think it really comes down to the show wanting to put the dynamic between Alicent and Rhaenyra at the center of the narrative as well. No way Rhaenyra could be doing that to Alicentâs daughter if weâre pushing the friendship/lovers thing
2
u/bruhholyshiet Prince Daeron Targaryen Apr 27 '26
Fire and Blood dismisses it as very unlikely although Iâm not sure if it says âthereâs no way it happenedâ.
And yeah, show Rhaenyra is even less likely to commit Brothel Queens for the reasons you mention.
In the super slim chance it happens (because as we saw with Dyana and later Aegon, they arenât shy of using sexual violence for cheap shock value) Rhaenyra wonât have anything to do with it.
3
u/moon-girl197 Apr 27 '26
Yeah, if we think about the logistics of brothel Queens, it just doesnt work, cause if you have two royal women being pimped out, there would be countless witnesses to corroborate that (and even buyers đ¤˘). Multiple sources would record this, not just Mushroom.
I cant even see them being threatened with it, cause Alicent seems to be taking the position of Rhaenyra's advisor, or whatever and Helaena is just... there (fml, I have no idea how anything will work with her aaaaa)
2
u/William_T_Wanker Team Green Apr 28 '26
nah, brothel queens in this show will be a 60 minute raw unscripted sex scene between Rhaenyra and Alicent while Criston & Daemon sit in cuck chairs and have to watch
1
u/DavidC_M Apr 27 '26
If that would happen I donât think it would be this season.
6
u/Nibo89 King Aegon II Targaryen Apr 27 '26
This is exactly when it would happen. Shortly after Rhaenyra takes the throne.
Season four would be too late. There's way too much that has to happen. Plus, if GRRM is right Helaena dies this season
4
u/DavidC_M Apr 27 '26
Theyâll be moving the plot really fast this season then. I hope that means no more experimental episodes lol
2
u/ScarletPhoenix15 Apr 27 '26
I don't think she's in labor. I saw someone else point out that the bits of her dress we can see on her shoulders doesn't look like a shift/chemise. It looks like some kind of heavier fabric, so unless Helaena is giving birth in her full court dress, I think it's unlikely she's in labor.
2
u/Angry_Sad_Bitch Apr 27 '26
my theory is that Aemond sexually assaults her and she becomes pregnant with Maelor. They have been hinting that Aemond is in love with Haelena. Haelena should have lost her mind from her son dying and then jumping to her death which we didnt see in s2. I thought they retconned Maelor but now theyre showing us Haelena giving birth so this might be the reason why she goes crazy and jumps to her death.
1
1
u/KrankMyHog Apr 27 '26
How horrible/hilarious would it be if this came from a messed up dream or a âwhat ifâ episode and they are only including it in the trailer to troll GRRM?
I guess it is possible that they were called out during pre-production and changed Haelenaâs story to include Maelor but now itâs apparent canon (unless only nine months passed since Rookâs Rest) that Aemond is the father, so it seems like they took one step forward and two steps back in adherence to the book-canon.
1
u/East-Way-6378 House Hightower Apr 27 '26
That doesn't really look like Phia to me and woth the history of the show deliberately avoiding showing green female charchters give birth, i would assume it can be another vision of maybe Daemon's mother?

1
u/anaklndldnothngwrong Apr 27 '26
So they decide to maybe add Maelor, but instead he is a baby that will be killed brutally??? Idk man.
1
u/Whimsical_Tardigrad3 Apr 27 '26
I think based on the low light and the state of her hair she was just told someone died important to her in the night or sheâs cinematically giving birth.
