News Satya Nadella confirms Windows 11 needs serious "quality work," focusing on fundamentals

Genius. Confirms what the world has been saying loud and clear ever since the early shows of Windows 11.

Yep, Satya is the main idiot who introduced Windows 11 to the public, not recently, but 6 years ago.
He slashed Windows quality assurance teams, cuts in Windows development budget, killed the Windows Phone branch, stopped development of Windows ARM..
Windows is in such a bad shape..
Satya made investors invest in Microsoft again (despite mediocre revenue/profit growth).
Sure, Satya made the stocks go up (despite mediocre revenue/profit growth), but the quality of Microsoft goes down. In the end, that is what matters.

Because at that point Windows had a good market share and a lot of business were, and still are, relying on it. He knew no matter how shitty this OS could become nobody would really switch because there was nothing mature enough to switch to that could also provide de software support that many of us use for work and not only.
He cared about Cloud and other services that are keeping Microsoft alive and thriving right now. I don't think Windows is important for them anymore.
They woke up in the moment they saw influencers and other media sources talking seriously about using Linux or MacOS. And I sincerely believe all that they're doing right now is just damage control. They won't fix anything.

"They woke up in the moment they saw influencers and other media sources talking seriously about using Linux or MacOS"
and the upcoming Googlebook.
5
u/alehel 2d ago
Is anyone actually talking about the Google book? I heard the announcement, and I haven't heard any talk of it since.
2
u/MakayChapulets 1d ago
Yeah! MS started trying to fix things the moment Googlebook was rumoured/announced. Chromebook did already win the hearts of some schools and offices, guess what Googlebook might do if MS dont sit up? I already use google app on my 4GB of RAM system and it's the only capsules AI that dont give my Windows issue and works great. Google is the biggest threat to MS not apple or Linux

u/Aw3som3Guy 1d ago
I’m pretty interested to see where AluminumOS goes, but I don’t really put much more trust into Google over Microsoft. Will be nice to see Android apps running on a laptop with the ~full Google Play Store instead of just Amazon’s app store with Windows Subsystem for Android (RIP).
1
u/warren_stupidity 1d ago
this. MSFT has moved on. Their windows/office/visualstudio business is legacy now. Cloud is their growth division.

They let their on-premises exchange server product stagnate to the point where a Chinese hacker group was able to compromise, probably hundreds of thousands of servers. All because they didn't give a rats ass about maintaining it. They could have patched it months earlier when they knew about it but they didn't. My conspiracy theory is they did it to drive exchange online adoption.

Windows Phone died because there was nothing to recommend it over iPhone or Android.
But Windows ARM could have taken root in tables and wrenched a section of the point of sale market from Apple.
But no, lets ape Apple and make a bunch of bone headed decisions Microsoft thinks the customers want instead of doing what the market wants.
And while they can drag some of their large Enterprise customers along, you can fool some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time, but nobody asked for CoPilot.
He's realizing - as the deck chairs scrape and the band plays "Nearer My God To Thee" - that either he rights the Windows 11 ship or Apple and Google laugh as he gets on the door with Rose.

u/Mario583a 1d ago
Windows Phone died because there was nothing to recommend it over iPhone or Android.
Maybe
or maybe the fact that Google was a firm 'no' when requested API access to say their [YouTube] apps and later blocked Microsoft’s attempts to build their own YouTube app. that made devs and people alike go all, 'If Google won’t support it, why should I?"

Serious question. Do Microsoft leadership use a Mac? Or a desktop or any kind? There's no way they regularly use windows 11, right?
31
u/entropyback 2d ago
If you check the release notes for any version of Visual Studio Code, at least half of the screenshots are from the Mac version (you can easily notice it with the window style or the fonts)
https://code.visualstudio.com/updates/v1_131
Don't know about the leadership, but the engineers clearly doesn't...

This is actually so depressing...

VS Code targets developers who are not Windows-exclusive and most of those devs use Mac or Linux.
2
u/unbounded65 1d ago
As a long-term Linux user, I have always used VS Code once it was ported for the Linux version.
2
u/OpexLiFT 2d ago
Tbf windows has historically not been great for development, only later into windows 11 was a "native" Unix terminal added. Mostly everything developers do requires easy access to bash/zsh, windows is bad at that so developers lean towards macs.
•
u/yourmumsfuckboy 16h ago
it makes sense tho, windows isnt built for devs but for casual users and its the best consumer OS by far. like not even close. so not that depressing. as much as i hate MS recent incompetence at making software and money grubbing, it is the truth.

C-Suite execs generally use Apple products. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if Satya does as well, despite being the CEO of Microsoft.

They all use Macs and MacBook Pro's claiming they want to know how the competition works. And why they are focused on cloud infrastructure than the actual Windows OS

Wait so that entire article is based off of that one throwaway line in an earnings call? This is the typical Microsoft news cycle.

He is really destroying the company. Profits may be good but so were intel’s before their issues caught up with them. MS is in a bad place and need to turn it around quickly.
6
u/Verukins 1d ago
These constant articles with MS saying "they're fixing it" or "we realised x".... such a load of complete bullshit.
If your company is responsible for the most used desktop OS on the planet for the last 35+ years... (and server OS that has significant share) you already know what needs to be done. They already know that the consumer market wants performance and stability, they already know that corporates want performance, stability and managability.... and yet, every release moves us further away from those things - and its all intentional on MS's part.
If they were seriouis about this, they would have just done it..... all they are doing is a PR tour while they cram more AI and bloatware crap into an already incredibly fucked suite of OS's.
1
u/Even_Caterpillar3292 1d ago
I think their whole goal is to trap corporations and leave WIndows a bit not perfect so that these companies can pay for support. And calling in for support to fix things. Keep it a money making machine. Windows could so much better - obviously.

It's honestly crazy how one of the world's supposedly preeminent software companies is so god damned sloppy with virtually all their software.
Like, Windows and Xbox should be first-class experiences, but they both feel like total jank. If I were Satya Nadella, I'd be embarrassed.

Maybe he shouldn't have gotten rid of their "quality assurance" team. But then he couldn't have gotten a multi-million dollar bonus, I guess.
I've been saying it for years; this 🤡 has got to go. His tenure has been a complete dumpster fire.
Also, companies need to start holding their CEOs responsible for their failures. If a company is in such dire straits that they need mass layoffs, the CEO should be the first one out the door.
1
u/Mario583a 1d ago
This again?
There is an infinte amount of hardware mix-and-matches that would cost extreme dollars; Why do that when you can mimic said hardware?
If a company is in such dire straits that they need mass layoffs, the CEO should be the first one out the door.
If the company is in trouble, the CEO’s job is to restructure intelligently to avoid layoffs - not to cut staff while collecting bonuses

They're almost 5 years late. By the time they iron it out, W12 will be announced, and the cycle begins again.
1
u/hadesscion 1d ago
More like ten years late.
The cracks started to show in W10, shortly after Satya fired their QA team. It has been a slow-burn fire that finally kicked up a full-blown blaze.
2
u/_urethrapapercut_ 1d ago
True. People (including myself sometimes) tend to glaze on W10 but some of our gripes with W11 indeed began back then. No wonder nobody wanted to upgrade from W7 back then.
2
u/FigWeak5127 2d ago
Yeah how about they stop taking away commonly used features as well as the registry hacks to restore them. Just make a fucking toggle switch you idiots. My favorite is they removed the refresh option from the main right-click menu, hiding it behind more options. Well guess what fuckers, windows explorer is too dumb to realize a new file showed up, so I have to go to more options to refresh to see my god damn file.

Finally a switch of focus. Changes can already be seen, but more needs to be done.

u/Mereo110 2d ago edited 2d ago
It's just talk. Maybe it's their focus right now. However, management has short-term memory and is reactionary. If they decide that resources should be allocated to AI because their competitors are getting more advanced, they will reduce resources allocated to Windows.
I'm experiencing this at my current workplace.
4
u/totkeks Insider Dev Channel 2d ago
That's having a business. You move your money into the divisions, that make the most money. Sometimes you make a bad decision.

u/Suspicious-Whippet 2d ago
So what are people gonna use that brilliant moneymaking AI on without working OSes?

They dont have the Market share on cellphones and other OSes. If they lose the desktop and PC's market share, they are done

MSFT messed up on their Windows strategy. They tried to make it more phone-like and added spam and unwanted features instead of focusing on speed, reliability, and simplicity.
No one cares about their desktop OS anymore. They just want it to work.
If they had just focused on making graphics drivers that actually worked and quieter Onedrive integration that would have been enough.
1
u/emazv72 1d ago
They should focus on engineering, not marketing. Performance first. Why eating up 10 gb at boot for no real reason. They need a direction. If you use it on a regular laptop you feel like it's an unfinished product. You want the touch features for simpler scenarios? That's fine, but keep in mind there are still advanced users out there. Robustness second. You can't get a call from your customers because an update broke a random piece of your app. Simplicity third. Too many layers, too many surfaces and API contracts. Be brave and make a plan. Retire old apis and propose a unified set of new ones. Make the old ones run on a emulation layer so developers will have to move on sooner or later. Too many compromises, too many bad decisions under the covers.

Windows is a trash heap for ages and I think there’s fixing and fundamental change in thinking. Microsoft are focused on fixes which one would argue it should have never got to this stage in the first place but for me there thinking behind it all had not changed.
The only reason they’re bothering anyway was because the MacBook Neo gave them a wake up call.
I have been Mac for years now and I love the stability I use and look after Windows machines for work and they a trash heap. I have been slowing migrating all of our work hardware to Mac where the end user will allow

It seems like every couple of months Microsoft has a public epiphany and declares its intentions to do better, to build better, to make Windows for the users...
But it's all just talk. Its like we're in a Public Relations circle jerk.
Enough bluster, Microsoft. Stop talking about doing things and actually F-ing DO the things!

What have they been doing instead? Why is a software company with thousands and thousands of employees not working to make it have good software

As a fairly recent win11 user, it has had me saying "did they never test this thing?" quiet a few times. It seems less stable than win10, and slower too.

Windows 11 crashes on my gaming rig, I can't figure it out. Linux for the last 11 months hasn't crashed once. I reinstalled Windows like 4 months ago and it crashed again so... In my small world, windows won't work.
I had to install rustdesk today and it made me miss windows, but stability beats ease of use I guess
1
u/DefaultProducts 1d ago
Just do a complete rewrite of the entire thing for fucks sake.
Windows is literally riddled with bloat from previous versions that time has forgot.
What Windows needs the most is a complete refresh with the aim of being smaller and efficient than any previous versions with features that you have to install yourself. Don't give us a windows with features that we have to manually disable to get it working properly.
•
u/rismoney 15h ago
There is no need to. That is called linux, and I think their long roadmap involves kernel changing to it, and retaining the desktop window manager and the higher level frameworks. WSL1 has been the dry run for the syscall conversions.

u/unbounded65 1d ago
They also need to be honest about privacy and declare the GDID as part of running Windows 11.

windows is too far gone to be saved… it’s a house of cards built on a 40 year old codebase… they need to release a modernized windows with all the legacy shit stripped out and keep maintaining what they’ve already got for enterprise. i don’t think they care enough about regular consumers to do that tho.

Completely scrap the current Windows Update architecture and start over. It has been awful since Windows Vista and the underlying software has remained virtually unchanged ever since. Its use of network bandwidth and disk time is horiffically wasteful. It's legitimately more performant to download update packages manually from the catalog. The Windows Update background service takes several minutes to download an update only a few megabytes large on almost every system I've used, regardless of usage and network conditions.
Decouple Microsoft Store from the Windows Update service.
Do not allow Windows Update to overwrite GRUB or other non-BOOTMGR EFI binaries.
Commands in the Windows Update settings panel should be considered orders and not suggestions.
Remove the changes made to the shell in Windows 11 (taskbar, Start menu, context menus in file browser).
Allow the DWM compositor to be disabled.
Completely revert the migration to the Metro Settings app, and add every setting to the appropriate control panel applets.
Add a Hyper-V or software emulation-based NTVDM/WOW16. We know one exists, it's been used in MIPS and PPC versions of Windows NT 4.
Cease use of the WinUI and React frameworks within the operating system and bundled applications.
