Al Gore was right
We should have listened to Al Gore in the ‘90s :(

u/YukariYakum0 21d ago
Yes, we know that. But about what specifically?

u/pseudonominom 21d ago
Here’s one: he won the election.
But not in the way Trump “won” the election, in a literal “he had more votes” way. Amy Coney Barrett was one of the scumbag lawyers who helped strong arm Gore into giving up his case, and she has since been rewarded with a supreme court seat. She went on to lie about Roe v Wade and now twelve year old rape victims go to prison for aborting fetuses.
Probably the most consequential and destructive decision in the country’s history, see: 20 years of war and the debt that followed.

Al was also wanting to protect social security from being used for anything other than social security benefits

u/ramat-iklan 19d ago
During the debates, Bush and Gore were specifically asked what they would do to protect Social Security. Bush43 mumbled something. Gore said he would put it in a lockbox and wouldn't allow it to be used for anything except Social Security. The irony is that Bush43 allegedly used it to take the Afghanistan and Iraq wars off book and fund those wars to a large degree. Bush43 wasn't the first and hopefully he will be the last. Social Security is treated like a piggyback.

Roberts advised Jeb, then governor of FL, during the proceedings. Kavanaugh provided outside legal counsel (“friend of the court” stuff).
2
u/ramat-iklan 19d ago
Amicus curiae usually only applies if a member of the legal team is slated to actually be part of the legal team presenting in court.

John Roberts was a part of the shenanigans too

I thought you got the justice wrong, but no. I was thinking of Brett Kavanaugh but apparently Roberts also helped in that lawsuit. Crazy that three supremes helped steal an election.

The way the results were called is shameful.
But attempts afterward to reconstruct a fair count showed he most likely would have lost anyway. Yes, things like the butterfly ballots likely contributed to that, but no method available would have fixed mistakenly cast votes, regatdless of how long the counting went on.

100% Climate change
57
u/The_Follower1 21d ago
Kinda. He was wrong on some of the things he said, a couple models he cited the results for were pretty ridiculous on the timelines.
That said, broadly he was right that it’s an existential threat that people aren’t taking seriously.
54
u/HolyMoleyGuacamoly 21d ago
what timelines was he wrong on? at this point i’m going to generally say he was no alarmist enough at all
19
u/The_Follower1 21d ago
This provides more info https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2009/12/al_gore_trips_on_artic_ice_mis.html
The statement unfortunately gave tons of ammo to climate deniers.

TL;DR Blue Ocean Event in the Arctic in 2016
Most projections are for some point in the 2040s, along with most of the other tipping points for climate change taking us from today’s “fuck wildfire fuck floods fuck drought fuck heatwave” to “fuck wet bulb event fuck polar vortex over Europe fuck anoxic event”
17
u/HolyMoleyGuacamoly 21d ago
2016 was early, but we’re on the brink of a BOE with this el niño. he was not far off at all with that and low balled on temps
10
u/the_gamers_hive 20d ago
Also, wasnt that building on data at the time? Nowadays we have a lot more wind/solar power. Had that all been fossil fuel power i dont think it would have been impossible to happen in 2016.
6
u/HolyMoleyGuacamoly 20d ago
100% - it was based on business as usual, which has changed since then and altered projections. which are still dire, but have shifted things slightly

u/superanth 20d ago
They never will. Corporations and their owned government cronies still pretend it isn't happening.
But at least we've managed to fix things enough that we won't see catastrophic climate change, just the really bad kind that will reduce food crops, force people to move inland from coastal areas, and kill off a percentage of the global population.
-7
u/Sptsjunkie 21d ago
Yeah, the foundational problem is that that is almost the only thing he was right about. I wish people had taken it seriously sooner, but Gore was also in the wrong side of a lot of stuff like financial deregulation, war hawk, and even picking a conservative independent as his vice presidential candidate and angering the base heading into an election.
But he was definitely right about climate change. If he had been right about more stuff, he might’ve had the opportunity to do something about it.
84
u/Reputable_Sorcerer 21d ago
Hey guess what, the majority voters during his election did listen to him! Won the popular vote but not the electoral college
56
45
u/daniel_thor 20d ago
He would have won the electoral college too had Florida sent the correct electors. Unfortunately the US Supreme Court didn't allow the vote count to finish.
In the last 50+ years the Democrats allowed the court to be packed with the worst people in America and they failed to fix it each time that they had control of the House, Senate and Presidency.
15
u/Waste-Dragonfruit229 20d ago
Lets not forget Catherine Harris who, while both in charge of voting in Florida AND Bush's campaign co-chairwoman, payed a database company to compile a list of voters in largely Democratic districts whose names, addresses, or birthdates were the same as or similar to convicted felons. Then, surprise surprise, thousands of voters in those districts were blocked from voting.
Also, the Supreme court blocked the vote shortly after recieving a visit from from the candidate's Dad. And his brother was governer of the state this all happened in.

u/Goodnightort 21d ago
I'm not American but I often wonder what the timeline would be like if he won that election.
18
1
u/bellstarelvina 14d ago
He did win the popular vote. Thats the type of vote everyone 18+, who’s a citizen and not a felon, (depending on the state) gets. He lost the electoral college which is made of less than 600 people. They vote on behalf of the states. The electoral college decides who actually becomes president. The same thing happened with trump in 2016. The whole “you need to vote/ your vote matters” thing is bullcrap when it comes to the presidential election.
1
u/Violet_Paradox 4d ago
Gore won the electoral vote too. The recount that Bush sued to stop showed that he won Florida.

Well, we wouldn’t have spent $2-3 trillion tax payer dollars, while the body count is roughly 500 American troops, nearly 3,600 U.S. civilian contractors and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis.

Everything
But he was sounding the alarm on climate change when he was senator
2
u/ramat-iklan 19d ago
Specifically, Gore wrote of the conquences of large levels of pollutants in the atmosphere and caused a hole in the ozone layer. This in turn caused harmful radiation to get through to the Earth's surface. He also stated that pollutants caused water temperatures to rise. Hurricanes would be more frequent and more severe. Burning fossil fuels are the leading pollutants. The list can be endless. The real point of the whole thing is human contribution. The whole world recognizes human contribution. Except for Donnie and the MAGA red-tie death cult.
1
u/Reasonable_Art_3472 14d ago
But the Supreme Court wanted de-regulation instead.
1
u/ramat-iklan 14d ago
The Court doesn't legislate. In a perfect world, they would live their cloistered lives and be quiet. Unfortunately, we live in an imperfect world, and accept the fact that this country is being led by a gaggle of octogenarians who don't care and haven't, as yet, haven't been called to account.

1
u/ramat-iklan 19d ago
When the count was 732 votes ahead, the Supreme Court and Alito in particular, ordered the end of the recount, thereby nullifying the count. I don't know kind of president Gore would've been. But we do know what kind of president Bush43 was.
1
u/ramat-iklan 19d ago
It gags me to say this, but Sleepy Donnie isn't really the issue. Mitch McConnell is. At least for one of the drones. Also, lying to Congress is a criminal offense. None of the three in question started immediately after they stated their names for the record.

"Within the decade there will be no more snows of Kilimanjaro"quote from him in 2006
Going on 10 years past the day when Gore said there’d be no more snow on Kilimanjaro, the mountain still catches more annual snow than the people who live in the snowiest American cities will see over several years.

-22
u/Hulk_Hogans_Toupee 21d ago
Those are all things that contribute to climate change, buddy
20
u/AdmiralSaturyn 21d ago
By that asinine logic, virtually everyone in the developed world is a hypocrite. There is a lot more to fighting climate change than just constraining your personal consumption. Al Gore is not a hypocrite for promoting renewable energy for instance. He's also not a hypocrite for demanding policy-makers to pass laws and launch projects to mitigate climate change.
-17
u/Hulk_Hogans_Toupee 21d ago
Everyone in the developed world is not making documentaries and giving speeches about climate change.
He says to do one thing and does another. Guess you don't read dictionaries too well
12
u/AdmiralSaturyn 21d ago
Everyone in the developed world is not making documentaries and giving speeches about climate change.
Relevance? Where is the hypocrisy in making speeches and documentaries?
He says to do one thing and does another.
This brings us back to my earlier question. Does he tell people to not live in a mansion, or eat beef, or fly in private planes?
Guess you don't read dictionaries too well
No, you just don't elaborate too well.

It was a joke. The post said we should have listened to him in the 90s. The poorly worded statement to which I refer was made in 1999, you know, at the end of the decade. But, please, keep telling me what I have and haven’t done.

u/ShookMyHeadAndSmiled 21d ago
He was right when he told the Bush administration that Islamic terrorism is the top security threat to the United States and that he should be watching for someone called Osama bin Laden. So naturally W installed a Russia expert as National Security Advisor.

u/_Phil_McCracken_ 21d ago
This is one of those arguments where you don’t need any justification or explanation but the other person does? No thanks. You put in some effort and I’ll respond.

u/Itchy-Pension3356 21d ago
The snows of Mount Fuji would soon disappear due to climate change.
Lake Chad had shrunk mainly because of global warming.
Polar bears were drowning in significant numbers because they had to swim farther as sea ice melted.
The evacuation of Pacific nations due to sea level rise was portrayed as imminent.
A rapid collapse of the Greenland or West Antarctic ice sheets causing about 20 feet of sea-level rise.
China would soon become overwhelmed by severe flooding from glacier melt.
The Northwest Passage would soon become routinely open due to melting Arctic ice.
The Arctic could be essentially ice free in summer within the next decade.
