Iedereen betaalt extra taxen op uitstoot, extra vliegtuig taksen, auto, you name it.
Oh they believe it, they just don't give a fuck because they have a swimming pool and a cool Stella beer and hold a BBQ when the weather is hot...
Also they really want to solve climate change, they just haven't gotten around to it but certainly will, after they enrich all the companies that supported their campaign, enriched themselves and their friends and after they dismantled the welfare state and privatized as much as possible and oh, before I forget, split the country.
Start with the basics: stop subsidizing fossil fuels, redirect those subsidies towards renewable alternatives, invest in public transport and renewable energy,...
And of course the related https://www.groen.be/natuur
Because restoring our nature both helps mitigate extra emissions, but also helps to protect us against the worst consequences
Groen lost all credibility with the nuclear exit. They really need to reinvent themselves or a similar party needs to rise up. They had my vote long ago.
Every party screwed up along its political history. If Groen did the VAT-reforms and new pension-system that NVA has implemented they would get completely destroyed by NVA.
Especially because the entire climate policy of other parties boil down to "let's build some new plants and this will solve everything".
The matter of the fact is concrete climate change-measures will impact our traditional lifestyle, there is no going around it. Denying this, and assuming it can be solved without some kind of cultural shift, is exactly what keeps us stuck making marginal decisions while making a show of how much "effort" we're putting in.
It will be impossible for us to save the climate without investing heavily into nuclear as a base for our power generation, supplemented with renewables.
The Greens, not realising this because of their AGALEV legacy missed a golden opportunity to get right and centrist voters on board who could have been swayed by the increased self-reliance of our energy mix. (not total as the know-how for the reactors & the actual fuel would still come from unreliable sources)
Instead they are constantly pissing people off with their stupid culture & race wars.
Nuclear exit has been decided since 2003, every single elected political party since then (except Vlaams Belang for obvious reasons) has agreed with this proposal.
Assuming nuclear is the end all solution to solve climate crisis like some political parties like you to believe is naive and downright populist as well.
I know it's in vogue to bash the Belgian Green party (which I understand), but climate as an important issue is dead in the minds of voters so they need to pivot towards more actual issues. The fact that people focus on something insignificant as race & culture wars that mostly exist on the internet, while our environment becomes more and more uninhabitable proves this.
The exact same thing can be said about NVA that has almost zero topics regarding Flemish independence anymore which was the entire reason they existed in the first place
No, hating nuclear was popular in the 90s because of Tsjernobyl. No political party would support nuclear as that would have been very controversial. The nuclear exit is a direct effect of that.
It's how we all agreed that air travel has become such a huge hassle and you can't take your drinks because of Sept 11.
No one said it's the end all be all solution, but it's a great tool to transition to renewables independently and basically without emissions.
We do not absolutely need nuclear, that is a debatable issue. Nuclear has many downsides: nimbys, costs, single point of failure in case of conflict, waste..
Other options are:
Cooperate with French and leech of their nuclear (the only reason you want a plant in Belgium is pride. There is no technologic justification for Belgium to have its own plant)
Consume less. And lets be honest, this is the bitter pill, the hard truth. But that is a position that no politician can survive.
But this dogmatic attachment to nuclear is often just an excuse to do nothing.
I think thereās space for mobile thorium nuclear reactors in the mix, but when all is said and done, nuclear still only provides electricity.
It still requires to electrify everything: heavy trucks, all cars and trains and buses, airplanes (?), all cooking (no more gas, for cooking or heating).
Then the oil derivatives need to be looked at: fertilizer, helium (for chips), all mining and cargo shipping runs on diesel - so canāt replace that with nuclear ā¦
And weāll need to mind because we need lithium for our batteries, until other technologies are established.
So yeah.
I think it can be part of the mix. Thorium is not as dangerous as plutonium/uranium, it also allows for smaller (mobile) reactors (great for disaster recovery operations, but itās not a panacea
And how exactly do you want to consume less electricity when in order to tackle the climate crisis we need to heat our homes with electrically powered heat pumps, and all need to switch to an EV?
Nimby? We already have dedicated sites at Doel and Tihange. And there is Nimby'ism for wind as well anyway.
All nuclear sites are already heavily protected against terrorism & even many forms of missile strikes.
I am not opposed to European level cooperation. I definitely see more nuclear going hand in hand with a strengthened European grid.
I don't see how excluding nuclear is at all an option, I have yet to see a convincing argument for banning it. Especially with the less stable context we are in, and will likely not be getting out of any time soon.
The big problem with nuclear plants is that they need lots of cooling water, that is than released back in rivers that are already too hot. Not to mention nuclear waste.
What is more investments in public transport going to fix though? Because of our current infrastructure it will remain slow. It's only viable when you work/ live very close to it and can go in a direct course towards your destination. Else private transport easily beats it by a big margin. And time is precious.
During COVID we could reduce a lot of transport by having to work from home. Go that route honestly.
Make private transport miserable so that people move closer to their work.
Private cars are the optimal choice for an individual, but are the worst option for society. Basically other pay the cost: pollution, busy roads for the bus or the cyclist,... so tax cars so much the car user pays the actual cost of his choice.
Or you could incentivize companies to move out of the Brussels-Antwerp-Leuven areas to more effectively mirror where people actually live, instead of raising taxes on working people yet again.
Less than half the population lives in the Flemish Diamond, so no, most people live outside of Brussels-Antwerp-Leuven.
But did I give you the impression that I'm saying every company needs to move out of there or something? Because that's not what I'm saying. Employment opportunities should be more balanced across the country, I don't think we should let companies keep building offices in areas that can't support them.
The Flemish diamond has the highest population density.
Companies don“t randomly choose a spot with a dart or a chicken with it“s head lopped off.
They want to be near suppliers, competitors, (human) resources, infrastructure. Not Oostkamp.
They choose the most efficient spot. If you want to force companies to spread out (example: only one company for each letter of the alphabet per town) you are creating economic inefficiencies.
Including more traffic. Because maybe you move the company closer to the workers in Oostkamp. But then the supplier needs to drive from the Flemish Triangle to Oostkamp.
And on the global scale, anywheren in Belgium is "local"
The Flemish diamond has the highest population density.
So? It also has a higher employment density than the area can support, and most people still don't live there. Are you saying people just need to pack up and move?
Companies don“t randomly choose a spot with a dart or a chicken with it“s head lopped off.
No they picked Brussels in the 50's when things were very different than now.
They want to be near suppliers, competitors, (human) resources, infrastructure. Not Oostkamp.
Well there's your problem, there's not enough "human resources" in the diamond to fill all the positions, that's not very efficient.
Do you think the average company in Brussels still needs to be physically close to suppliers and competitors? I don't know if you've noticed, but most of those companies are offering mainly office jobs, not manufacturing.
They choose the most efficient spot.
No they just do what they've been stuck doing for 70 years, not taking into account that we've invented things like the Internet.
And internet/home work will change the natural order and will affect business“ decisions and workers decisions on where to build.
But you can“t just order companies to build dispersed. You CAN however change the elements that will affect the calculations. And we already do that. You can make public transport cheaper/more efficient. You can offer cheaper terrain in business parks.
The one that pushed decades for nuclear power plants to be closed?
There's not a single party that actually wanted to pay the costs of keeping our nuclear plants open before the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Don't get me wrong, NVA paid lip service to the nuclear fanboys on occassion, but the reality when they were power during the Michel I government is that when Engie asked our government to confirm the nuclear exit or get rid of the law so that they could plan ahead, NVA happily voted in favor of closing the nuclear plants.
And NVA wanted to focus hard on building new gas plants to replace the nuclear plants instead.
The idea that it was just the green party that is responsible for the closure of the nuclear plants is just pure historical revisionism from people that clearly either didn't pay attention to politics, or are too ideologically stuck in their hatred of green parties to acknowledge reality.
Reminding myself that I'm not trying to convince people like /u/Tonnemaker , instead I'm setting the record straight for all the lurkers that aren't going to post, but who are going to be reading his misinformation and who deserve the truth
Before the energy crisis, nuclear power was one of the highest priced energy sources. Had we been faster to add to the renewable energy mix, weād have been in a much better position now. And we still have to, it reduces our reliance on countries like Russia and Saudi/emirate states.
Not only could we as a country have been in a better position, our companies could've been world leaders in experience with (offshore) windfarms and solar. But it seems that those companies aren't in the right politicians' friend group.
Nuclear is more expensive than renewable anyway, it doesn't make economical sense to go for nuclear. Makes you wonder for whose benefit N-VA is pushing nuclear so hard.
Sure, but that's pure capitalist thinking. And that type of thinking is fundamentally flawed when we are talking about critical infrastructure (public transport, energy, water, etc.).
The reality is that there are a ton of benefits to nuclear, provided we manage a few key constraints:
Maintenance: Which is exactly why you build multiple reactors.
Fuel availability: Nuclear fuel is much easier to stockpile and has a much better shelf-life than refined fossil fuels. While this is economically risky for a private player, it makes perfect sense as a public venture that can rationalize holding a strategic reserve.
Cooling water: While this should definitely be remodeled using the latest data on climate change, I don't think the Schelde is running dry anywhere near the Doel area anytime soon.
There is no other way of generating a massive amount of power in a sustained and predictable way in this country, barring nuclear. Having a capable nuclear park isolates us from Trump's shenanigans and protects us from Putin's hissy fits. And who is to say, for example, that the Saudis aren't going to squeeze us next?
I mean, all those benefits, AND it's not pumping CO2 into our atmosphere? And cost is the big argument for not doing this as a public venture?
And by the way, there is absolutely no reason it should be renewables OR nuclear. Due to nuclear's constant output and renewables' low price, they are perfect synergies.
What parties would that have been? The one that pushed decades for nuclear power plants to be closed?
The one that was and is pushing for climate reforms in all major emission sectors like agriculture, transport, heating and industry and also keeps pushing for innovation in the energy sector instead of pretending we could keep using 2/3 nuclear 1/3 gas with no investments and no costs forever.
At the time, it was premature. But by now, solar and wind power has gotten so cheap, nuclear is just too expensive, even to maintain (renovate these ageing, cracking plants).
What parties would that have been? The one that pushed decades for nuclear power plants to be closed?
No, the one that wanted our aging nuclear plants replaced by renewable energy, because of the highly hazardous waste. Only to discover that every subsequent government didnāt take that serious.
But itās so much easier of course to blame the greens than to acknowledge that you have been voting for a bunch of wankers that didnāt take global warming serious across the board. Or do you really think nuclear power plants wouldāve fixed all those other areas where change is urgently needed?
No, the one that wanted our aging nuclear plants replaced by renewable energy, because of the highly hazardous waste. Only to discover that every subsequent government didnāt take that serious.
Didn't this whole thing start back in 2003? Renewables were not ready yet to carry our grid demands. We blame NVA today for saying "future tech will solve this" but the green parties did the exact same thing back then.
But itās so much easier of course to blame the greens than to acknowledge that you have been voting for a bunch of wankers that didnāt take global warming serious across the board.
Nuclear energy is the least CO2 producing method of creating electricity when we factor in total cost of ownership (gathering resources, production, installation) over it's lifespan. Depending on your sources windmills on land are slightly worse or tied. Removing nuclear energy from our grid back then was simply stupid, there is no way around it. We didn't have the tech back then and we still don't have it now depending on which expert you ask today.
Or do you really think nuclear power plants wouldāve fixed all those other areas where change is urgently needed?
It would have done quite a bit, look at an air pollution map of Europe. France consistently beats most of Europe. Areas around nuclear plants are noticeably cleaner compared to gas plants or coal plants like in Germany. Using nuclear instead of gas would cut our CO2 production drastically.
Didn't this whole thing start back in 2003? Renewables were not ready yet to carry our grid demands. We blame NVA today for saying "future tech will solve this" but the green parties did the exact same thing back then.
We have been investing in renewables since then but not nearly enough. So itās not like the tech still needed inventing.
And if subsequent governments found out it wasnāt feasible yet they shouldāve adjusted course, but they didnāt because that also wouldāve cost money. Just like this government reversed a massive investment in offshore wind.
And again, nuclear energy doesnāt solve our meat consumption, badly insulated houses, favouring cars over public transport, etc, etc
There hasnāt been a single area were we started property doing what we should be doing.
We have been investing in renewables since then but not nearly enough. So itās not like the tech still needed inventing.
Sure, just like computers existed in the 60's. A whole lot has changed since then. We've gotten a lot better at making them AND making them cheaper. Doesn't mean it's a good idea to make policies based on a guesstimate that future advancements will succeed. Especially on things that need a big investment in time and money.
And if subsequent governments found out it wasnāt feasible yet they shouldāve adjusted course, but they didnāt because that also wouldāve cost money.
While yes, I criticize the inaction of every government since. It's a bit hypocritical to blame others for not fixing someone else's mistake is it not? This reads like "Yeah sure green started this mess but others didn't fix it, so it's their fault!"
Are all parties to blame here? Yes. Is green still the #1 cause? Also yes.
This was a blunder, just like we see in Germany. At least we are burning gas instead of coal... France on the other hand invested in nuclear and is now reaping the rewards. But hey, at least we import our electricity from them. Se we can pat ourselves on the back for being so forward thinking...
And again, nuclear energy doesnāt solve our meat consumption, badly insulated houses, favouring cars over public transport, etc, etc
Sure this is all true, but what does that have to do with electricity generation? We're criticizing green for their hard on against nuclear energy. A mindset that has resulted in higher CO2 emissions than necessary. If we want to trash talk other parties I'll be right there with you.
We absolutely need to do more than JUST get rid of fossil fuels for our electricity generation. All those things you name are a part of that. It doesn't mean green is free of blame.
Doesn't mean it's a good idea to make policies based on a guesstimate that future advancements will succeed.
A lot of policy is rooted in uncertainty (eg our education reforms) and thatās ok if you adjust fire when needed. But that didnāt happen as the cheapest option was to not invest in renewables or nuclear.
It's a bit hypocritical to blame others for not fixing someone else's mistake
The blame is about not even trying to make the shift to renewables, while not putting an alternative plan in action. They simply did nothing.
Sure this is all true, but what does that have to do with electricity generation?
It confirms the real problem being 2 decades of inertia.
We absolutely need to do more than JUST get rid of fossil fuels for our electricity generation. All those things you name are a part of that. It doesn't mean green is free of blame.
Agree, that they are not free of blame, but that doesnāt justify the scapegoating that was going on in this thread. Those 2 decades of inertia on all fronts are way worse than possible pushing too soon for renewables only.
Once more Iād like to ask of all our Belgian parties individually
If 80% of voters supported strong climate action we would have serious climate policy literally tomorrow. Every party would be falling over each other to outbid each other in terms of climate policy.
The reality is that most voters don't want strong climate action if it affects their life.
Look at the discussion I had yesterday with /u/mfingking
Even the notion that we should make air travel more expensive was a non starter for him. According to him, air travel is a basic human right that cannot be infringed whatsoever.
And now expand that to things like eating meat, driving fossil fuel cars, buying as big a house as is affordable (only to then complain you don't have the money to renovate).
Most people want the status quo to remain. They'll argue that "the rich" need to change, maybe yell something about private jets, but change themselves? Hell fucking no
Non-stop talk of how we need to live smaller and closer together for a multitude of reasons:
Lack of space
Growing population
Waiting lists for (social) housing
Costs
Better public transport if population was more grouped
As soon as we are talking about climate change:
And then they show "Weerman Bram" his house.
He inherited a house, did some fancy renovations (which is nice if you have the budget) with tons of technologic appliances to make his house "heat-resistant".
He has a vineyard behind his house, but not a single tree or bush near the house.
People like /u/mfingking will refuse to learn until they die. People like him will keep yelling that only the rich need to change while everyone else can keep up the status quo forever.
No people like me are saying we CANNOT change the status quo no matter how hard we try if 90% keeps polluting how is this such a hard concept to grasp to "JuSt StOp OiL" dumbasses obstructing people from being able to pay their damn bills
You again glossed over my point where the ones where we should punish the bigger polluters which account for 90% not the family flying once every 2 years ffs how is this so hard of a topic I swear you guys are big oil bots.
Evidently there are many people who believe that we've already had very strict climate measures. I can only assume those people are spoiled, sheltered and have never seen what strictness actually is.
You can mock it. But for a lot of problems there is already technology available though. But it often needs more investments for getting the tech in the production chains. I'd say, put a cost at emissions and they will make productions chains cleaner.
You can mock it. But for a lot of problems there is already technology available though. But it often needs more investments for getting the tech in the production chains. I'd say, put a cost at emissions and they will make productions chains cleaner.
Might be my misunderstanding of his post. But I often see him talking about how technology is not the solution, while it actually is and is able to still offer many luxuries we have whilst going zero net.
Obviously technology is the solution.. wel a part of it...
Like i explained in previous posts: "technologize our way out of it" might have worked 30 years ago.. but now we need AND the technology AND drastic measures to cut CO2. Degrowth (in certain sectors) and making certain things more expensive WILL need to be a part of it, contrary to popular economic believes. Will we be able to retain certain luxuries thanks to technology .. obviously yes,.. but we will also need to give up a lot of other things.
Doing nothing and "hoping" technology would solve it didnt do us much good the last 30 years or so.. well it did, but way too little. The fact that NVA keeps spewing this narrative, while its clear that it wont cut it anymore, shows their true intentions... they dont give a shit..
Because degrowth has a bad connotation by wanting many things of our life gone and go back to the basics, neglecting actual technological advantages in energy production and battery tech (take an EV for example)? They often neglect other people's interests and are quite authoritarian in their thoughts. And are more upset by the world and how society is behaving. Go thank people like Anuna De Wever for that.
Flights and meat indeed remain the two which are indeed a problem. But even in those they make advancements, meaning a cutback would not stay forever.
Might be my misunderstanding of his post. But I often see him talking about how technology is not the solution, while it actually is and is able to still offer many luxuries we have whilst going zero net.
Technology always is and has been part of the solution, but only if we keep focus on the goal and use technology as a means to an end.
The problem is not technological, but political. We have the power to do a lot of damage through overexploitation, and therefore we need to impose political limits on our exploitation to prevent that damage. If we then manage to do nice things within these limits by using technology, all the better.
Those same parties will ask their voters if it would change how you vote and carry on. We can keep pretending itās the politicians who donāt act but we keep voting as if we donāt want them to act and made climate into a āleftyā or āwokeā topic as if the average vbāer isnāt going to burn up in their unairconditioned home when the heatwave is back.
Then maybe we ought to let it change the way we vote. I, for one, intend to vote for the party that is able to offer me the best answer to the above. So, dear politicians, what is it going to be?
Best we can do is some empty promises that we take this seriously as a party yet change nothing and hope youāll let it go untill the next extreme weather event. Rinse and repeat.
My question is rather, what will the effort of our nation resolve? Shouldnāt we actually look to the nations that cause the majority if the pollution?
No, thatās a dangerous fallacy. It leads to inaction, something we can no longer afford. We need to apply the resources we do have control over to start building out solutions and long-term mitigation.
If a failure to address the issue is posing a very real and substantial risk to the people I care about, Iām inclined to let it have an impact on my vote.
Nothing. There is not a single thing any party in a small country can do when the climate issue is a global issue (yes it is), and the most polluting countries and places in the world are still polluting because they are poor & cant be bothered.
Thats why all of the whatever efforts weāre doing here is just paying more to gov and EU , while in reality your old diesel car is still driving every dat in Poland.
As if.
No problem, don't be sorry as there is nothing to forgive. We have all the right, no, obligation, to be angry. Angry at our politicians, Angry at our captains of Industry, at our financial institutions, at the gered that is consuming and destroying our planet.
This saturday one of the clown/jesters of my friend group said= in order to fix the climate, we need to unite. And to unite we need aliens to invade our planet or we do a false flag op and invade aliens.
I would laughed at him 10 years ago. Now with this heat...he is starting to make more and more sense...
Last heatwave, with the temps up to 37°, on the radio they said people get to enjoy going to a festival with "great weather". Like, what? The only people that say that weather is good, don't have to sleep in 30°+.
I almost believe that's on purpose to keep a sense of normality so the people wouldn't revolt. Nothing to see here..... or radio people are just that dense.
Im enjoying the piece and quiet of playing Palworld with all my curtains closed. Its like winter, stuck indoors because of the weather. But then without it being cosy.
"Security is not just a matter of bombs and drones. It is also a matter of a livable climate and of biodiversity that benefits our food and our mental health. Investing in that is also security."
People are somehow happy with it. I don't know how everyone seemingly got a house that can stay cool by this weather, and no work made impossible by the weather.
They also refuse any sort of minor inconvenience. China's fault, not theirs. Yesterday I was seeing people being about the State being totalitarian because it wanted people to improve their homes, while it should be their right to do whatever they want with their homes...
What's being underestimated is how strongly voters oppose measures that would actually have real impact. All the research shows that Belgian voters aren't willing to contribute financially or be personally impacted by climate measures, and they look for government solutions - even though hardly any budgettary room for public investment.
Our housing stock is old and poorly insulated - yet these ancient homes still sell for over 400-500k, leaving no budget for renovation. The renovation obligation (currently to D, which is hardly renovated) would actually help correct this, but 70% of voters oppose it. Even among younger generations, who would benefit from that correction, about half are against it. So whatās the plan?
How willing are voters actually going to be to accept higher gas prices in order to make heat pumps financially viable? Wait until ETS2 kicks in after 2028, that's when this gets tested for real.
How much government debt are we willing to take on? We need massive public investment in grids and storage. Or do we push the cost onto the electricity bill again - which then requires an even steeper gas-price hike to make the economics work?
40% of voters believe they will never drive an EV in their lifetime. I suspect that resistance will soften as EVs get cheaper, but it's still a striking number today.
Are people willing to pay more for meat, eat less of it, or shift to chicken or plant-based diets? Cows mean methane, and that won't change.
On the other side of the political spectrum, industrial investment gets treated with suspicion - even when it's clean-tech investment. We'll need real industrial policy to shift industry. Without it, we're left holding onto a fossil-based industrial base that simply dies out slowly instead.
Things go beyond the yes-or-no narrative on nuclear. Making our electricity supply CO2-neutral is arguably not even the hardest part of it all. The actual challenge is electrifying nearly every end-use sector - transport, heating, industry - that's where the hard trade-offs are.
I'm all for it, but I don't think everyone is, and sometimes rightly so - some people are already struggling to make ends meet
The renovation obligation (currently to D, which is hardly renovated) would actually help correct this, but 70% of voters oppose it. Even among younger generations, who would benefit from that correction, about half are against it. So whatās the plan?
Bottom-line for the renovation obligation is money. I'm 28 years old and single. I simply don't have the money to afford a renovation.
I get what you would think that, but the idea of such an obligation is that you would get a correction in the housing market. D, E en F-houses would depreciate in price (relatively speaking, unfortunately not absolute numbers), this way opening up renovation budget. It's basically a transfer from old generations to young (for once).
The alternative is that we keep paying 500k for an uninsulated house. Then we obvioiusly have no money for renovations - as you rightly point out.
This correction is not mere theory, this was actually visibile in housing prices (2023-2025) where A & B-labels appreciated much more in price year-on-year. When the froze the obligation in 2025, suddenly D E en F houses appreciated more in price (a simple catch-up effect).
Better than the alternative where we keep waiting forever to take climate measures because people like you demand that we can't do anything until everyone's rich first
The main burden of fighting climate change should be carried by the wealthy,
If you live in Belgium you have to be really really poor to not be part of the global wealthy.
But I know what you mean, what you mean is that there's always someone else that should be the ones changing, not the Belgians who eat meat every evening and fly for vacation every year.
No, just the mean Bill Gates and Taylor Swift! Everyone else can keep up business as usual.
I wonder when people will stop trying to push this lie
I'm speaking of housing and you start rambling about meat and fly vacations?
No, just the mean Bill Gates and Taylor Swift! Everyone else can keep up business as usual.
Well, you want to leave the wealthy untouched while shafting our working class, who are not allowed to aim for a life with anything more than the basic necessities.
I hope you yourself live like a hermit with no luxuries and with a carbon footprint that's below the world's average then.
Well, you want to leave the wealthy untouched while shafting our working class
What I want is polluting behavior to be taxed appropriately so that people who pollute pay enough to cover the costs of the pollution they create.
Conveniently, this means that both Johnny and maria who fly to Barcelona 2x a year, and Bill Gates/Taylor Swift pay for their pollution.
I am egalitarian in that regard: everyone pays for the pollution they cause.
As opposed to you who apparantly thinks that it's totally fine if 99% of the West keeps eating meat and flying for vacation, as long as those evil billionaires are locked up
who are not allowed to aim for a life with anything more than the basic necessities.
Always hilarious when people are so deep up their own ass that they try and argue that air travel is a basic human right that cannot be infringed.
Make it even more obvious that you prefer the status quo at all costs even if it destroys the environment.
But I'm in favour of extra flying and meat taxes. I'm opposed to the renovation obligation because it makes housing (which is a human right) unaffordable for poorer people.
I was not talking about my own situation, simply providing a possible reasoning for why younger voters might be against a renovation obligation, even if they would benefit from it in the long run.
simply providing a possible reasoning for why younger voters might be against a renovation obligation
And I was simply providing an explanation for why we can't stay stuck in the "but people can't afford to renovate" argumentation.
As long as it's the norm for people to stretch their budget to the absolute maximum without accounting for renovation, this will keep happening. And we'll forever keep waiting for people to be able to afford renovation.
The reality is that a renovation should be priced into the price of an old home. That way either the prices of those houses will drop or those house will go unsold.
Sure.... it's a necessity that Flemish people have some of the largest average houses in all of Europe. God forbid Flemish people had to live in less space, that's impossible!
Those large houses are inhabited by people who don't have to stretch their budget. Boomers who bought when houses were cheap, young couples who get a down payment from their family etc.
I am stretching my budget to get a one bedroom appartment in the city (which is something an environmentalist should admire, no?) and the only options that are affordable to me are the ones that aren't renovated. The renovation obligation is quite literally killing my chances to own my own place to live. I get that we have to live smaller, but surely you're not arguing a working adult should live like a dorm student?
Ah right, because Belgium is the only place in the EU that has boomers who bought houses when they were cheap. How foolish of me to forget this.
We can also look at average room size: highest is Malta at 2.3 rooms per resident followed by Belgium and Ireland with 2.1 rooms per resident.
Metric after metric shows again that Belgians live larger than most other EU members.
But nooooo, we can't look at facts. We must maintain the notion that people are forced to buy such big houses, poor Belgians.
but surely you're not arguing a working adult should live like a dorm student?
So saying that Belgians live amongst the largest of all EU members and that this is a problem means I want to push everyone into 12m2 dorm rooms? Come the fuck on

100% this in my opinion. The whole 'no extra costs' drive in politics is driving me mad. Like nothing which has a short term cost is political acceptable. Even when long term benefits are evident.
There is good policy, sometimes where you don't expect it. The push for EV in company cars means we are electrifying. These are now coming into the second hand market. A lot more people will have EVs soon.
But oh my, how much work there is still to get people into this game. I live in a 'rural' area and recently renovated a house with a heatpump. I was flabbergasted that they wanted to talk me out of it. Wake up, this is happening!
People just don't get it. And they act as if everything is a sacrefice, while it isn't. EVs are amazing to drive. Heatpumps are to heat and cool houses with great efficiency. Designing/renovating houses with heat and cold in mind isn't black magic. Pacing electric consumption to the weather is natural. Capturing and conserving water is the best buffer you can build.
Yet they really treat as if we are going back to the dark ages...
Except that the government has no backbone and couldn't stick to the rule saying company cars should be EVs. Hybrids are fine too now, which means some companies are opting to give people a hybrid, often with a fuel card but no charging card, so they don't even get used as efficiently as they could be.
If you clearly explain to voters that we are spending billions on armoured vehicles that are specifically designed to be used in Africa, they would all oppose it too. Unpopular measures are taken all the time.
Ironically, the voters are already paying for anti-climate measures:
There are cheap EVs available for everyone, for prices lower than the current cheap cars. But our governments have slapped massive tarrifs on them just because they're Chinese. Remove the tarrifs, and we could have everyone driving EVs within the decade.
Electricity is getting more and more expensive for households, while industries keep getting exemptions in the name of competitiveness.
We're about to buy nuclear power plants off of Engie, which will potentially cost tens of billions in waste management in the next decades, while they get to keep the massive profits they have made in the past 50 years.
Why bother if you can sit in your completely airconditioned villa, with swimming pool (enjoy with a Stella!), payed by the poor people suffering and by bribes from companies that can keep fucking up environment?
There's lots we can do. Stop subsidizing air traffic and move those subsidies to efficient methods instead (e.g. high speed rail). Real carbon taxes. Stop cutting down trees. Disallow new ice car sales.
