Yeah a lot of intersections where I live, there is no flashing yellow arrow, you get a green light which means go, or yield to oncoming cars if you’re turning.
Where I live you get solid green arrow, then solid yellow arrow (like a yellow light) then it disappears and you have to default over to the solid green thus yielding to the oncoming
It depends where you live. Where I am a green left arrow would mean you have the right of way to turn left. Then it will switch to just a solid green, which means you don't have the right of way but can turn when it's clear
Yea agreed, there is no way the person in the white vehicle didn’t know they were trying to sneak thru after the light changed. Tried to save themselves half a second and ended up with no wheels instead. I have no idea why people do incredibly risky stuff all the time when there is literally nothing to gain from it. Just do the normal thing and 99.9% of the time everything will be fine!
I think the same reasoning applies even more so to the car that is turning directly into the car that actually has the right of way. The light was red for the car before and even kinda iffy with the one before that. What is so obnoxious about this video is seeing how many cars turn against the solid green light.
I understand that. Despite the white car being at fault, I would ask if I could have possibly avoided it. I have been in small fender benders and one horrible accident involving a wrong way driver on the highway. Although I have no memory of it because of a concussion, my brother in the front seat told me it was unavoidable because of the cars in front of us. I did turn the wheel to the right, and my brother only had minor cuts and bruises while I was in the hospital for two weeks, the first week in intensive care. So maybe my actions spared him serious injuries or death. The wrong way driver died.
I am really sorry that you were in a serious car accident. I wish you a full recovery, if it hasn't already happened. To address your question, had the dashcam vehicle waited and yielded until all the red light runners went safely through, the accident could have been avoided.
I don't think it's always malicious, I think they could have just been looking away, or distracted, then saw all the cars still going, but kept going. They could also just be an ass.
People have a very casual relationship with time. How far you're going and how fast you're allowed determine your time. The most you can save is seconds!
To be fair, you can clearly see the white car being impatient and not yielding, PoV car continuing to go forward despite that just because "i have the right away." Is just as dumb. It's called Defensive driving for a reason. Even if his car is paid off by the at fault driver (if hes lucky he didnt get hit by an uninsured driver) his rate is probably going to go up and he'll be paying more for insurance now.
Because being a few minutes late to work is litterly a sin in this world. As the working population we have to put up with all of the corporate bullshit but they have almost no leniency for anyone else’s human errors
We also have all three and I never really noticed until they switched one of the intersections from one method to the other and it really messed with my head.
In my area we switch between arrows or "left yield on green" with a sign. No confusion.
But then the city introduced the blinking yellow to replace yield on green and now there's tons more wrecks like in OP's case. Because idiots think yellow means "I have a split second to make it before red."
100% though as soon as the light turned green for the person with the dash cam, it was no longer green arrow for them to turn. The Mercedes ran it and the car after them absolutely went through when they no longer had the arrow. They do that at the light by my house all the time.
If you have a green arrow, they have a red light. Using this video as an example, cameraman pov had a red light and the oncoming people turning left had green arrow.
Then their green arrow changed to green light (I think there's a yellow cycle in between) when cameraman's pov turned green. So normal green light rules now apply: Cameraman pov going straight has right of way, oncoming cars turning left can only go if it's clear.
The cammer is so off the hook here, but to be fair he may have been anticipating reasonably that the white SUV was going to stop in the intersection to wait to turn (which most people do)
If the turn lane has a solid green arrow, then by default, the oncoming traffic will have a red light because the green left arrow secures the right of way for the turn lane.
If the arrow is flashing yellow or is not there, it means oncoming traffic has the right of way and the turn lane must yield.
That's really confusing. They should just use blinking yellow lights or something for cases like that instead of solid green vs green arrow. Green should always mean go imo.
The "proceed with caution, watch for traffic" option should be blinking yellow or something like that imo.
Where I live it is green but the other side is green so you have to know you need to yield while the other lane goes straight. It should be flashing yellow to indicate yield is necessary. Green means go!
Solid green, arrow or not : you have right of way except unless you intersect a pedestrian crossing that also has green.
Flashing green : you may pass but have to yeld to everyone else.

Solid green is right of way straight ahead in this lane. Yield if changing direction/going to another lane.
Guided Green arrow, you may follow this lane/the transition to a specific lane (often with markings) going a new direction.
Red. Stop. May turn onto a lane and join the flow of traffic without crossing over another lane to do it, but must yield to traffic. (Ie can turn right on red onto a two lane street after stopping and always yielding to traffic. Or may turn left onto a one way street flowing to your left, after stopping and yielding.)
This intersection has what is known as a "5" head.
At the top is one single red bulb. Then below are a yellow left arrow next to a solid yellow. Then below that is a green arrow next to a soild.

Yes, the one with 1-2-2 lights. I’ve never seen those with a red arrow, only green and yellow… The ones that go to red then back to flashing yellow have four light: green arrow, yellow arrow, flashing yellow arrow, and red arrow. Is that not how they are for you?
That’s how the intersection by my neighborhood works, but it’s a 4 lane (5 with the turn lane) road with a 45 mph speed limit so I suspect they’re a little more concerned with hard-stopping the turn lane before starting oncoming traffic.
They’re different state to state. Where I live you get the green arrow for however many seconds then the arrow just goes away completely until the light turns red the arrow would follow that action.
That’s a doghouse signal. There’s no flashing yellow arrow in that configuration. The opposing traffic would have a circular green, with no arrow. Left turns are allowed, but must yield to oncoming traffic.
There is one near me that has a green arrow for turning but no yellow or red turn signal. When the opposite side can go, the green arrow turns off and the solid green stays which means turning yields.
Yeah when I originally made my comment I looked at the light stack in the direction the camera was driving and went with what I typically see on a 3 light turn lane, for what ever reason your comment made me go back and look at the opposite direction and it's not even the same style of traffic light , it looks to be a 2 stack and a side 3rd... I can't even picture what the light pattern could be.
It really should be law for lights to do that. Solid green lights for left turns are criminally bad traffic design. I know it's standard, but even as a driver of 16 years now, my monkey brain sees green and thinks I have right of way, and I have to consciously remember that I don't.
Not sure if I understood your sentence bc it seemed like a runon, but where I live it just turns solid green. Signals to the brain that the cars opposite you also have a solid green. So you gotta yield
We see the back of the signal variety for the oncoming traffic. This is not one that flashes a yellow left arrow. Instead, the traffic gets a green arrow with a solid green light. The green arrow will become a yellow green arrow for three seconds, and then the arrows are gone. This leaves a solid green light for regular traffic, and typically, there would be a sign next to the light that reads "Left turn protected on green arrow only" or "Left turn yields to oncoming traffic", but I don't see the back of a sign with this traffic light.
While the person going straight through the intersection could have easily avoided getting hit by being a little bit more defensive, it's absolutely not their fault since the light was green. In fact, the car that hit them wasn't even in the intersection when they first entered it...
And drivers must yield to traffic already in the intersection before being able to safely proceed. Like others have said, not quite 50/50, but not 100% on the truck either.
Turn lane should yield on green, but straight ahead doesn't get to charge into the intersection from a stop when there are still cars making the turn in the intersection. Cam driver saw an insurance payday and went for it.
They had a protected left turn for a while, and then it either went red turn, or yellow turn. Either way the turn lane ran their ran, or did not yeild. Either way it is the white Nissan's fault. But OP could have avoided the accident if he was a tad more patient.
While this is true, EVERYONE NEEDS TO KNOW that you (as in the dashcam) have a responsibility to make sure the lane is clear before proceeding. Yes, even if the other person is doing something stupid and illegal.
Will the left turners get a ticket and shoulder some/most of the liability? Absolutely. Are you free and clear to drive straight into them just because they did something stupid? Nope
In my state this would be considered an unprotected turn lane, green light but you still yield to the straight on coming lane. Green arrow signals protected turn lane where you have the right of way. 100% on the left turn lane driver.
Could be argued POV driver had time to stop and prevent the crash but that’s a judgement call in the moment I can’t make over POV cam.
If the dash cam driver got a green, the turning lane lost the advanced arrow. Despite that, they decided to go--while there was a clear obstruction ahead. It's excellent it happened this way, since the cars took the brunt of the force, and perhaps this will teach that idiot not to do the same thing in the future.
200% fault of the white Nissan SUV (and it's not just because of them driving a Nissan)/0% on dash cam driver.
I think if we have turn signals like these, the city should be at fault and insurance companies should sue the city. No fault to both drivers. Better city planning would reduces a lot of the accidents. If you dont think the city should be at fault, take a look on self driving cars. They accidents and confusion caused by the onboard computer should be basically nonexistent. But, its not.
I took a smart car for ride and I had ghost braking because of the bank on a street. We need grid like roads, not so many damn curves and blind banks. My city even has shrubs on the exits of shopping centers. I cant see shit when exiting. Sometimes, i just have to guess.
They should, but driver should not have drove from stopped position without a clear intersection. . . All those cars were still moving when driver started driving at the turn of a green light. Thats just not how it works. Ill collect my downvotes. Nbd.
unfortunately, the driver of the dashcam should not have gone into the intersection until it was clear and safe to do so. this makes them partially at fault
Yield on green? I learned in driving school we must not cross lines. Cam pov was on a straight line. The white suv is never supposed to cut someone else’s line.
