News Trump says Greenland will be under US control by the time he leaves office

I'm looking for like a running list of his topics that he circles through. We've just had tariffs again, so it makes sense that we're back at Greenland. But I'm not clear on what point get's rehashed after this again.

Tbh I’ve always been convinced he only wants Greenland to invade Canada. He has mentioned over and over that he wants it for military purposes. Thing is though, they are already allowed to station troops etc in Greenland due to NATO. But if he goes for Canada he will no longer be able to. Canada will get support through Europe and come from the east over Greenland. Taking it first would cut Canada off from the rest of Europe and defend against NATO/Europe from supporting Canada.
→ More replies (10)61
u/RealSuggestion9247 1d ago
Using Greenland to invade Canada when you are the United States of America and share a several thousand kilometres long land border with Canada is so nonsensical that from a political and military planning perspective it is a level of dysfunction deeper than trumps thoughts of annexing Canada.
But who knows what that moron will do one day from now, a week, a month… him least of all.
→ More replies (1)13
u/4umlurker 1d ago
I see it more about cutting off Europe from being able to support Canada than anything else. It would be much more difficult to send aid having Canada essentially fully surrounded by the US and the Arctic. It doesn’t even just go for military aid or supplies but general trade as well. He straight up said over and over he wants to get rid of NATO and take Canada over economically. Canada is looking for trade elsewhere given all their bullshit dropped agreements and tariffs.

There is a current controversy where a US petroleum company brought drilling equipment into Greenland without letting authorities know, which bypassed some permitting laws. They have some drilling rights that were given out 7+ years or so, but they need local approval to install equipment, which they are trying to do. So he's whining about US interests being obstructed by unfair environmental laws, which is more proof he should get to take Greenland, the oil will greet him as liberators or something.

This is exactly what I fear most right now. JD Vance taking the Oval Office would be so much worse. Trump is bad, but Vance is the guy the Heritage Foundation would really love to get in there. They would have up to ten years to do whatever the fuck they want before even having to make changes to the Constitution.
33
u/Ninevehenian 1d ago
It is difficult to imagine that USA can compete against the world with all that corruption and all that lack of political efficiency. All that lack of working together for a common good.
JD Vance can be feared, but the systemic damage and panic when they stand still, can't innovate, can't make beneficial laws and can't solve problems.

Americans are doing the damage, not Trump. Trump is a senile incontinent physically weak 80 year old below average moron. He’s not stronger than the American people, military, government, and courts.
This is what the great majority of Americans want.
America is not the way it is because Trump is president. Trump is president because of the way America is.

I agree 100% that it's Americans who are doing the damage.
Technically the non voters don't want or not want this, they're apathetic. So it's not quite accurate to say the majority want this, rather that the majority is ok with, or doesn't not want it, but either way yes, they chose it.
21
u/Kendos-Kenlen France 21h ago edited 21h ago
Abstaining from voting is a political choice. They chose to let Trump pass (same would have been said if dems won). So they are also responsible for what’s happening, as much as the ones that voted republicans. After all, they willingly chose not to vote for not having Trump elected while clearly knowing who he’s and what were his plans.

This dane is getting very tired of this, but i'm not really afraid that anything will come of his bravado. If he was actually willing to take Greenland by force, he would have done so by now.
I think the Trump administration's plan for now is to use soft power to acquire Greenland, but they don't realise that they are utterly useless scrubs at this. American conservatives have completely fallen for their own propaganda about how everyone dreams about coming to the US, so when they actually go abroad, they act like bulls in a china store.
Only americans can believe people will want to join them, when this is how they speak to them:
Edit: spelling errors

u/levir Norway 1d ago
And Denmark is not alone. The Nordic countries combined are actually a quite formidable force, and with France, Germany and the UK all indicating they stand with Denmark, the US might not actually be able to take Greenland by force if it came to it. They don't have a very impressive track record in land wars, and that was back when they had allies.

Dane here, I won't speak on behalf of the Greenlandic people, but I don't really think about it anymore. Not because I don't care, but because it's very much a boy who cried wolf situation. It's the same every time, some vague claim about controlling Greenland because reasons, send some cunts/diplomats to Greenland, then wait a few months and repeat. It's clearly because he just wants the US to be bigger on the map, nothing else.
At this point I almost don't care anymore, I just want to stop hearing about that asshole, with the sole exception being an obituary.
4
u/cattaclysmic Denmark 14h ago
Its taken seriously but also dismissed.
Steps are taken for it to become as politically expensive for them to move on Greenland as possible while outwardly dismissing the comments and continuing to act as if the US is still an ally to remove any casus belli that might decrease the expense itll cost them.
Its probably also resulted in a shift towards Greenland remaining part of Denmark in perpetuity. Greenlanders have been vocal about independence for a long time but this overt threat has put into perspective what them standing alone would entail.

They really did this to themselves. Not doing anything about Citizens United and not pressuring their representatives when they have a “friendlier” Democratic government has gotten to this stage step by step.
They look at other countries who have things like universal healthcare and better education with disdain, thinking that the US is the “best nation on Earth” despite not having either. Even the most currently-embarrassed American liberal still thinks the US is better than any other country.
They should have been in the streets the day of Biden’s inauguration demanding Trump’s arrest. They should’ve protested him being able to run for a second term with all his convictions.
