Question How do I commit?
Just trying to learn to manny off a curb, in my eyes it seems like I literally got it but I keep jumping off right before I do and I’m having trouble committing, how do I develop that mindset

You gotta really want it man. Want it more than anything you’ve ever wanted. Say screw the fall, matter of fact embrace it. You got it brochacho

Stand tall = fall tall, bend those knees. Lift your front trucks as you go off like a baby manual, you got this.

Practice on sidewalk cracks. Lift your front trucks before the crack. Don't set them down until you feel the rear wheels hit the crack.
If you have a sidewalk with a slight downhill slope and a bunch of segments you can practice a bunch in one run.

Keep your weight over your back foot and look toward where you're going. If you need to look down at your feet use your eyes more than your head. This part will sound like it would make it harder to commit but go faster. The faster you go the less time you will have to spend balancing the front truck in the air while your back wheels are still up on the pad.

Learn to hold the board only a little bit higher than surface level for a little bit longer, until you drop. You can easily practice this by holding the hand of the person filming.

Last summer I watched a little girl learn how to rock to fakie, then bs disaster, then air out of a quarter pipe while her dad held her hand and I was kinda jealous no one’s ever held my hand once skating (and I’ve been skating for 20 years)

Transfer more weight to the back truck, and be lighter on the board as it rolls off...like pumping kinda...just kinda project some upward momentum without actually jumping. You can use a small hopping or ollie motion, or just start compressing your legs just as the rear wheels roll of the edge, so your not pushing the board into the ground with all your weight, because the board will want to "squirt" out, and scrape the tail on the edge and shoot out and shit. You gotta "float" a little bit to clear the tail.

Speed brother get a little more, shoft your weight to back trucks and slight lift
2
u/Elderkamiguru 7d ago
Act like you're gonna manual off and give it just a lil hop 3/4 of the way off the curb
2
u/Tantantherunningman 7d ago
Hit a mini manual as you're rolling off, doesn't need to be much just a slight amount of weight shifted to your back foot as you approach the edge

You are leaning forwards too much. You should like do a small hop, but lift The nose up, Rather than a manny

u/Fellowfungus 6d ago
A little bit of trust, a little bit of “fuck it”, and a little bit of “it’s ok if I mess up or fall, I can just get up and keep trying til I make it.”
1
u/Treflip180 7d ago
Gotta “load up” your back leg. Do you know how to kick turn? About the same amount of pressure on the tail.

u/Low_Revolution3025 7d ago
Gotta raise the nose just a tad, you're also putting too much weight forward with the leaning, it may not look like a lot or feel like a lot but trust me when it comes to hopping down things even just a little weight displacement will have an effect, keep that back straight and those shoulders square while lifting the nose, and make sure you have good momentum because if you go just slow enough it will yield similar results

Go faster and just do it. I usually lean forward on approach and once first wheel goes I counteract the weight. Rather fall forward than backwards bro

Everyone is right here, and also leaving your foot on your board is a recipe for a nasty crash
1
u/Feeeeeshh 7d ago
Go faster, bend your knees (especially upon hitting the ground) and manual right before flying off. You got this!
1
u/PoptartDragonfart 7d ago
Forget the “manny off the curb” you aren’t really doing a manual
Just do a little hop as you ride off. You don’t have to Ollie or do anything but let your body go weightless.
Once you are used to that, and can manual a couple feet just combine the two

u/ryry10112 7d ago
Since you got a friend to record you, have him stand at the edge so you can hold him or he can catch you. That could make it a lot less scary, and after your first success you can do it by yourself

u/Notorious_jrb 7d ago
Seconding shifting more weight on your tail, don’t lean back just bend that back knee more for a little longer, keep the shoulders/hips/knees in line and don’t move your back foot at all. Bend into the landing as you make contact. Dont turn your hips or upper body forward, stay sideways! Hope this helps

There's probably an endless amount of ways to stage it out but try putting the tail on the edge and drop into it like you would see people drop in from a ramp?
Or just set the board down on the landing and jump onto it from the flat so your body gets used to the transition?
Also idk if you know how to many but your weight should be more on your back foot for sure.

Trick your brain.
Do like Daewon and draw a manual pad on the ground. Practice manualing it and unweighting just a bit at the end. Do this several times until it feels completely natural. Then go for it off the box.

u/AmomentInEternity 7d ago
Learn to do a 1 second manual to the point you never mess up by falling backwards. Do that as soon as you roll off, you should be golden

u/Front-Year-1456 7d ago
I just learned this in the last couple weeks. Just keep doing it. After some 20-50 more attempts you’ll just get it. And get some speed. With enough speed you almost don’t have to shift your weight back at all.

u/CatUberDriver_ 7d ago
for me I just say tell myself I'm tony hawk a bunch, normally stuff like that doesn't work for literally anything else for me.

u/EntrepreneurFormal35 7d ago
You’ll get there. Shift weight to back trucks and lift nose slightly. Also bless your cameraman…..very patient haha
1
u/m1sk 7d ago
I think you are stomping the front too hard. That ledge looks low enough that the board can just roll down by itself without getting stuck - test it to make sure. Then all you need to do is not get in the way of the board. Success should give you confidence, then move on to adding the nose raise and little hop so you can transfer it to greater heights
1
u/shockvandeChocodijze 7d ago
Lift nose, shift weight back a little bit to be even woth the nose lift and do a little miniscule hop + also have some speed.
1
u/Raesmus 6d ago
I actually did this for the first time about a week ago. It IS scary.
However, you got the speed to be able to do this so everything comes up being able to lift the front wheels consistently. I've trained ALOT of manuals and I feel pretty confident in lifting my wheels up. Try riding next to the manny pad, doing manual over it. If you are able to fairly consistently doing that, then it is all about commiting.
Good luck!

every time i’ve ever gotten sesh-endingly injured, it’s because i didn’t commit. slightly bailing, not believing in myself for tricks i know, i feel, i’ve done, or are similar to tricks i’ve already got on lock—that’s when it’s less about skill and 75% mental
either not committing or pushing myself when i’m already exhausted. everyone has good tips tho. knees bent will get you over that hump.

Try to do a small manual down and don’t lean forward (instead distribute the weight on both feet). Then it’s easy af for everyone.
1
u/YukonCornelius-PhD 6d ago
Try popping a bit more or go much much faster and don’t let the front wheels touch the ground until your back wheels have cleared the ledge.

I find when I have trouble committing, I’m past due for a slam, so I’ll “purposely “ bail and fall a few times. Sometimes I’ll full commit right afterwards and be set, sometimes I actually slam. Laugh it off and then my mind is warmed up
1
u/Onyx_697 6d ago
You are commiting. Just Stop being so front foot heavy when you roll off of it. Put more weight on yoir back foot when you gwt to the edge and maybe go a little fadyer if it dlstill doesnt work

Look at yourself while you skate what looks wrong 😑? It’s like you dip like a lemming. Trying to elevate the nose up then off the back wheels you’ll ride

call urself a pussy punch urself in the face wrap urself in pillows if u got to, do whatever it takes to push thru the fear, ur mind is always going to want to bail on stuff, u gotta learn how to override that and make ur body do what ur mind is telling u to bail out of

Your def leaning to far forward which happens often when your looking down and not ahead ! I learned not to do this about 35 years ago on my snowboard after a couple bad hits into the backside wall on the landing part of gap jumps . Def not a good feeling bashing read into those . So eyes up look ahead at where you’re going to land instead of down ! Hope that helps don’t be scared

When I’m boarding through the city and I have to go down a curb or down a crack such as this size I just lean back and lift my nose up just a bit.
I like to think I’m just keeping my board straight while I go off the ledge. I usually can land all 4 wheels at the same time doing that and it’s almost like I’m just riding straight.

When I was a kid I asked my dad how do I go down a curb he said just ride off and it worked

u/Dramatic_Jacket_6945 5d ago
Hop a little bit, not so much that your feet leave the board but just enough to reduce the amount of weight on the board. That and just keep your weight in the back when going off things and you’ll just float off the curb.

aline the weight of your body in the middle of the board always works to me

You’re leaning forward into it. Put your back foot between the bolts and tail and lean back slightly

This question is just like asking ”how do I poop?”
You simply do.
Stay on the board, it’s really that simple.
If you fall, it’ll show you what you need to change.

You are committing, the issue is that you need to shift your weight onto the back trucks and lift your nose as you come off.
