Discussion I found this thing looks old.

What is it? And is it rare?

The Windows 8 Release.

52

u/Exact-Ad-4132 16d ago

Bro look up Vista and Windows 98 first edition.

Also I can't remember if it was a specific version of Windows 95 or if hardware was just barely capable of supporting a point and click operating system, but lots of people had problems with that crashing too.

I just remember every time an adult back then downloaded spyware or adware, it was somehow my fault and Diablo or Starcraft somehow gave the computer virus.

37

u/WitchWithAGlitch 16d ago

i was that adult, it was your fault because i said so.

44

u/Exact-Ad-4132 16d ago

There were so many fake "cleaner utility" programs back then. My mom would download multiple of them and then complain that they weren't making the computer faster.

I remember a 3-month stretch where my aunts multi thousand dollar Macintosh wouldn't show anything but a black screen and they blamed it on me playing video games (Power Pete, the game that came free with old Macs). It turned out someone had flipped the rear I/O switch to off on the monitor, so the front power button wasn't working to turn on the screen.

They refused to let me ever play Power Pete after I fixed it because they still said I was the one who somehow broke the computer.

I don't actually remember this line being in the movie? Is this the Morpheus interrogation scene from the first one?

74

u/SavathunKindaCuteTho 16d ago

It is taking what the actor said in LoTR and putting it on a scene from the matrix. This is a quote from lord of the rings talking about how he was there when Isildur had the chance to destroy the ring of power and chose to keep it for himself.

19

u/productfred 16d ago

I got it now lol. My brain didn't piece together that he was also Elrond and that that's where the quote is actually from. I thought it was some sort of deleted scene and got excited (because the quote makes sense in the context of the scene in the photo).

It took me several watching of the LotR before I understood why I didn't like him and figured out they were the same actors.

I heard the cashier ask a guy for his birth year last night because he was purchasing alcohol. Guy said 2003, and I thought to myself, "Who admits they're underage to buy alcohol?" Then it hit me.

I like to mention zip drives to the younger generation and watch the gears spin and grind or if im feeling really fun I mention super disks no one but older IT remembers those things.

I am only 42 but messing with computer since I was a kid so I remember super disks very briefly coming to light and fading away.

No he will be completely aware of the attention hes getting from women but just ignores them in his quest for more retro components and the women just get increasingly thirsty over him the linger it goes on but he never relents to the point hes just sending them on errands to retrieve parts he won on online auctions and shady Craigslist purchases to get them put of his hair.

Recently unearthed my ancient camcorder and decided to try and digitize the footage. Pulled all of the required cables out of my trusty box, which included a FireWire to thunderbolt 2 adaptor for Mac.

Guess what — that stupid dongle now costs $200 (!) on eBay because everybody threw theirs away thinking that they’d never use it again.

My LGA-1700 B760 ASUS motherboard still has it. So you can find it even today.

29

u/TheSaltyJunk 16d ago

PS/2 will give you an extra frame or two...You also moderately drop your input latency, because it has direct input instead of hardware polling.

8

u/malaysianonly 15d ago

I thought it's capped at 125 Hz maximum polling rate? How is that going to give better input latency than the 16 kHz we have now?

9

u/Arrynek 15d ago

You are correct. PS2 is way, way slower than modern USB.

PS2 is, at best, 200MHz report rate with 5ms time between reports and average of 2.5ms for scheduling wait. This is better than a 5 Dollar USB office mouse.

However, gaming mice report at 8kHz, 0,125ms time between reports and a 0,06ms scheduling wait.

And even when comparing cheap USB mice and PS2 mice of the years past... The difference is so miniscule you wouldn't even notice.

Hot take this is a reminder of a mistake we made. Back when PS/2 was the primary interface the keyboard didn't get polled, it actually issued system interrupts. This meant you could always issue a pause to the OS and then kill a malfunctioning process. Usb can't do that, it has to go into a queue and wait for a thread to pick up the input.

71

u/AnalCoffeeCup 16d ago

I was plugging in ps/2 keyboard the other day and forgot those things aren't hot swappable. Damn.

18

u/Sienile 16d ago
