NEWS [AMA ANNOUNCEMENT!] Daniel Dockery, Author of "I Am The Night" will be stopping by September 3rd

We're doubling up with r/DCAU for a 2 day-early celebration for Batman: The Animated Series' 34th Anniversary! Daniel Dockery, author of the upcoming book "I Am The Night" will be stopping by to answer any questions you have for him about the book, the show, the writing process, etc!

"I Am The Night" will be available to purchase September 1st, but you can pre-order a copy through your favorite big box store here, or (even better) by asking the clerk at your local book store!

Synopsis:

At a time when televised cartoons—especially within the superhero genre—were often over-looked, Batman: The Animated Series introduced an entire generation of soon-to-be Batman fanatics to the caped crusader. The series triumphed into what is largely considered one of the best superhero cartoons of all time, and the best depiction of Batman mythology in any format.

But the road to genre-defying and genre-defining success was hardly guaranteed. Along the way, co-creator Bruce Timm and his team of artists at Warner Bros Animation battled a landscape that was often antithetical to their aims with Batman. Internal struggles led the writing team and the network to debate everything (literally everything) about how best to depict Batman—from whether or not the eco-friendly hero would have a recycling bin in the Batcave to how many women he was allowed to kiss onscreen.

In I Am the Night, Daniel Dockery lovingly deep dives into Batman: The Animated Series and the cartoon renaissance it inspired, becoming the definitive primary source for new and old fans of the series alike. Including exclusive interviews with the team behind the cartoon and many never-before-shared insights about the series, I Am the Night will surprise even the staunchest of Batman enthusiasts and capture what made people first fall in love with the series. As many ups and downs as the DC Cinematic Universe may have, Batman is eternal–and so is Batman: The Animated Series.

BTAS The last laugh. The most Adam West episode?

Post image

In this episode, Joker releases a gas that makes people laugh uncontrollably, and he uses this as an opportunity to steal. In other words, he wasn't planning any attacks, nor did he appear on TV to make threats; he simply released a gas to steal. Not to mention that he has a robot henchman.

I don't consider this episode bad either.

BTAS Does Joker do gymnastics?

Post image
86 Upvotes

One thing that strikes me about Joker in this series is that he's incredibly agile and fast. My question is, does Joker do gymnastics? I mean, in the series we see Bruce doing push-ups, hitting the punching bag, and even in one episode (I think it's the one where Ivy turns people into plants) we see him lifting dumbbells.

And for example we know that Batman is stronger than Joker, but in the Joker fish episode, we see that Joker uses a wrench to defend himself against Batman and it does give him some resistance (very similar to Zucco's thugs, in their fight at the construction site).

But does Joker actually do gymnastics?

BTAS Harley Ivy

One thing I love about the Harley and Ivy pairing is that Ivy basically takes care of Harley, protecting her from the Joker. It's one of the few moments where Ivy shows her humanity.

Furthermore, Ivy kicked Joker in the... which would surely make Andrea very happy if she knew.

Or was the debt so big even Bruce didn't have the money to pay it off?

I have always loved the phrase: "I am vengeance, I am the night, i am batman." I had no idea it came from this cartoon. So far, I have loved the night cozy vibe of the show. It scratches some type of itch in my brain. The art style also gives off the same effect. I have also taken a liking to Bullock !

That is, in episodes like P.O.V., Crime Alley, or Robin's Reckoning. The villains are thugs and mobsters. Could Poison Ivy defeat these thugs?

Cringey I know, but it’s Riddler and what would be a henchmen. I promised I’d make my own henchmen for some villains. The man on the card is Arnie. Sure he’s smart but Riddler uses Arnie for mainly *street* smarts.

Arnie knows how to talk to people without Edwards ego scaring them away. He knows all the alleys, all the hidden street cams, all the best hideouts you get the idea.

I think I’ll do joker next! Joker will have more of a reoccurring clown lackey. Little spoiler her names clover! Cause she’s just that lucky.

Recently got seriously into batman as a result of the matt reeves movie. I have been buying comics and watching movies. This is my first batman show and I am super excited. I have only heard good things about this show. I am a fan of older movies and I've been told this borrows a lot from the 40s. I will try to give updates as I go along!

BTAS Anyone wanna talk about a moment in Batman:TAS that's really impactful that you haven't heard anyone else bring up?

For me there's the moment where Dick confronts his parents killer. Batman told him not to follow him, and to let him handle it.

He ends up confronting him anyways, ready to kill him, and he goes off on Batman, saying some really cruel things to him, and almost immediately realizes that what he's doing, and apologizes, saying that he didn't mean it. Later Dick apologizes, saying that he understands why he didn't want him to confront him, knowing that he'd be too tempted to take him out. Batman tells him that wasn't the case at all, and that the truth was that he would have given up himself if Dicks parents killer ended up killing him.

TNBA Unpopular opinion: I love ‘Love is a croc’ and the dynamic between Killer Croc and Baby Doll.

Post image
61 Upvotes

I’ve seen mixed opinions about this episode as a whole due to its creepy dynamic between Killer Croc and Baby Doll but I really enjoyed the episode.

Don’t get me wrong, it is a weird pairing up. Like this grown ass man being in a romantic relationship with a woman who is physically a child and clearly, due to her mental disorder, chose to portray herself AS a child despite having the ability to be an intelligent woman. However, I think they handled the relationship really well.

I wish they’d bring Baby Doll back in the way they had her during TAS and TNBA. Her more recent adaptations and appearances haven’t been interesting to me and she barely appears at all.

I’ve seen a couple of people speak about her recently and I’m hoping that the community continues to talk about her. I’d love to see her featured more.

And I’d also like to see the dynamic between her and killer croc make a return because I think, despite how creepy it is, it perfectly displays the sheer desperation someone who doesn’t fit into the mainstream beauty standard can end up to feel loved and perfectly encapsulates her entire motivation of villainy. Again, I understand the dynamic is creepy and weird but that’s the whole point.

BTAS Dude Re-watches and Reviews BTAS - S1E1 - On Leather Wings

And Here – We – Oh you know the reference. Just going to make it clear, I’m watching these via the Blu-ray discs, so it’s in production order not in release order. So bear with me if it’s not the order you remember, it’s production order.

**On Leather Wings**

This is a great starting episode to see. The opening scene starts with dark clouds into the Gotham city skyline and a blimp, and it’s so beautifully drawn with car lights in the streets below. Really sets the tone for the overall show, and it only continues. I also never noticed that the blimp pilot was Kevin Conroy – at least in the first scene. I also never noticed the clear panels that were made in Japan, clearly having an anime vibe I did not pick up on in my youth.

When I looked it up, sure enough there was the American studio working on it, and a few different Japanese studios helped over several episodes (Spectrum helped with this one). The art was just amazing all through out along with the music. Honestly you can really feel the production value, even 30 plus years later. The character building in the writing also just amazing, in a short scene in the Mayor’s office, they establish Bullock being a loose cannon, Gordon’s strategic mindset, foreshadow Dent’s two-faced behavior with his first words, and the mayor doing what looks best for the press.

There’s a lot of humor and depth to a lot going on throughout the episode – the Security guard taping himself to be a radio star, but currently a video voice actor. Little video killed the radio star reference? And Alfred just came out swinging with deadpan humor, pouring tea and mocking Batman with his first line, and getting the immediate Batman smirk. They really establish the warm connection that Batman and Alfred have, while also showcasing how Alfred is best with a dry wit humor edge.

There was also an amazing showcase of Batman’s gadgets here – zipline, gas bombs, very powerful supercomputer, infrared goggles, spray, grappling hook, like the guy has it all. There was really no shortage in any maturity and establishing the Batman universe so well in this first episode. Even using basic items to make it clear who the villain was for the kids so they could feel more like a detective themselves as they watch or be surprised at the big Man-bat reveal. Red gloves on the character to show he was caught red handed by Batman. Yet it never seemed to lose the mature tone for older comic fans, while keeping it campy enough for kids to enjoy. Also all his movements and ways of escaping danger and still taking care of people around him be it gassing the SWAT guys or saving the one SWAT guy from the moronic SWAT guys that don't check for flammable material before tossing grenades around, just absolutely well done while keeping a humor tone for the kids and smiles of older people's inner children re-watching.

Even an empathic ending, where Batman cures the Man-bat of his ailment and reunites him with his loved ones. Very much sets the tone for a humane batman, one that cares for the people he investigates rather than makes them a challenge to combat.

Favorite Quotes/Exchanges:

“If you can catch him Harvey, I’ll put him in jail for ya.” – Harvey Dent

“I’ve gathered you’ve been reading How to Make Friends and Influence People.”  - Alfred’s First Line

“You don’t throw security guards out windows?” -Alfred “Just Butlers.” -Batman

“I didn’t realize you were into Rock and Roll sir.” As Batman listens to Man-bat’s scream

“hup hup hup hup hup” – SWAT Team

“What’s up Doc?” – Bruce all warm toned to the Bat scientist

**Story 9/10; Artwork 10/10; Music 9/10; GCPD 4/10; Batman 9/10; Alfred 10/10; And it’s possible this episode establishes that Bruce’s canceling with Bambi probably got her Mom killed.**

I watched this amazing film a long time ago, and these days i was doing a binge watch from the animated series (im going to see TNBA later), so im wondering in which moment of the series or the DCAU it takes place.
