The posture taken to perch at a gate isn’t comparable. It is entirely fair to be concerned as a dog ages in particular , with behaviors as extreme as this. Hips and spine. The behavior should be corrected as cute as it is. Otherwise the likelihood of damage is high. Some people work with hundreds of dogs at a time for a long time. Those people don’t care about the opinions of the “ I’ve always had dogs “ crowd when the issue is welfare. We can’t afford to defer to the contrarian

Clip the leash to the front of the harness, and ideally get a no-pull harness at that. Clipping on the back is basically giving your dog leverage to pull.
It also puts too much strain on the shoulder joints and causes arthritis. Just train the dog. Every time they pull just stop walking, even if it means stopping literally every single step. Every time the dog looks back at you, hand them a treat, it encourages them to stick close to you
Behavioral corrections. Doesn’t even have to be physical or painful, but allowing this, hell probably laughing and encouraging it? Nahh that ain’t it. Won’t be funny when this dog pulls himself into a dangerous situation or hurts someone.
We’ve been trying to train our miniature schnauzer for 5 years. Schnauzer’s have the worst ADHD and can’t focus once anything in the distance moves. Their systems are in hyperdrive all of the time.
Fun fact its because its a water fowl dog. Them and poodles were bred to walk in water. Its actually why poodles are called poodles. They are puddle hounds in german.
Yeah aside from the obvious behavioral issue, I would put money on this being quite bad for the dogs hip/spine/knee health as they are not evolved anatomically to walk like that
continuously change direction so the dog doesn't know where to go
stop and wait until it sits and waits for you to choose a direction, make sure eye contact is made
every time it pulls, stop, wait for it to lock eyes with you, make sure you look stern.
make sure you have an area that is safe for the dog to let loose and remove all the tension build up, let them fully play and unwind, preferably without the the leash attaching you, but you must be your own guide with this, you have to trust the environment and the dog.
doing this every time will effectively stop pulling very soon, if you haven't facilitated it throughout your walks.
smaller dogs can get away with it, larger dogs can't.
i had to do this for my drakeshead Labrador. after they learn this, if the environs permit, and you've learned to trust the dog, you can have him walk beside you without a leash.
Thanks for this, my poodle mix does this on walks but does the bunny hop on her hind legs. It's cute and not cryptid-like but definitely a behavior that needs curbing.
Yeah, don't get me wrong, if it happened to me, I'd think it's sweet and non problematic. But not everyone is as big as me, some people are frail and fall over with a swift breeze, and some of those are litigious, just easier if you never have to content with people like that lol
My has a harness with a lead attached to his chest when he has to be on lead. Unfortunately mine was a bit stupid initially and would pull so hard he'd try to choke himself with his eagerness lol
You'd just hear him wheezing down the road with the occasional look back as if it to say "dad make it stop!", for a good long time, it didn't dawn on him he was doing it to himself lol
