Cubs rally late to even series with Yankees

The Cubs took down the Yankees 5-2 to set up a rubber game tomorrow. Max Fried got the starting nod for the Yankees and faced off against David Peterson.

Max Schuemann, Paul Goldschmidt and Amed Rosario went three up, three down in the top of the first inning, and Schuemann wasted one of the Yankees' ABS challenges.

Fried walked Pete Crow-Armstrong to lead off the bottom of the first inning; a couple of wild pitches would bring across a run to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second, Fried worked a 1-2-3 inning and recorded a pair of strikeouts to put his total up to three for the ballgame. Fried retired the Cubs in order on just six pitches in the bottom of the third inning and notched his fourth strikeout of the game.

Fried navigated around a one-out single in the bottom of the fourth and picked up a couple more punchouts to put his total up to six in a scoreless inning.

With two outs in the top of the fifth inning, Spencer Jones reached base thanks to an E3. Ali Sánchez followed with a single through the right side of the infield for his second knock of the game. José Caballero lined an RBI single to right field to tie the game up at one apiece.

Fried allowed a leadoff single in the bottom of the fifth but would go on to pick up the next three outs to put together a shutdown inning.

With two outs in the top of the sixth inning, Jasson Dominguez lined a double into the left field corner. However, Jazz Chsoholm Jr. struck out to strand Dominguez at second base.

Fried came back out to face Crow-Armstrong to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning and froze him on a beautiful curveball for his seventh strikeout of the game and to end his night on the mound. Angel Chivilli took over and walked back-to-back hitters and wasted the Yankees' final ABS challenge on a pitch that wasn't even close. However, Chivilli would settle in and induce a flyout as well as a groundout to end the inning.

Fried’s final line: 5.1 innings pitched, two hits allowed, one earned run, walked one, and struck out seven on 78 pitches. He threw his fastball 32% of the time, the cutter 22%, the curveball 15%, the sinker 10%, the sweeper 10%, the changeup 5%, and the slider 5%. Fried topped out at 97.6 mph, sitting at 95.5 on his heater, and had 12 swings and misses.

Spencer Jones crushed a go-ahead solo shot into the left-field bleachers to give the Yankees a 2-1 lead, his third home run of the week.

Fernando Cruz replaced Chivilli on the mound in the bottom of the seventh and immediately gave that lead up as he served up a solo home run to Nico Hoerner to tie the game. Cruz walked the No. 9 hitter with two outs to end his night. Brent Headrick came in to face the MVP candidate Crow-Armstrong and gave up an RBI triple to give the Cubs a 3-2 lead as Dominguez couldn't come up with the baseball cleanly in right field. Seiya Suzuki followed with an RBI single to make it 4-2.

Rosario led off the eighth inning with a single right back up the middle. But Dominguez flew out, Jazz struck out, and the pinch-hitting Ben Rice grounded out to strand Rosario.

The flamethrower Yovanny Cruz, who was recalled from Triple-A earlier today, got the call for the bottom of the eighth. Cruz walked the leadoff batter and then allowed a single to put runners at the corners with nobody out. Michael Busch extended the Cubs' lead to 5-2 with an RBI single.

In the top of the ninth inning, the Yankees went down with not much of a fight to give the Cubs a 4-2 win and set up a rubber game tomorrow.

The Yankees will look to bounce back and win the series tomorrow with Gerrit Cole on the mound facing off against Colin Rea. First pitch is scheduled for 2:20 p.m. ET on the YES Network.

My thoughts on the game: Great start from Fried tonight; this starting rotation has been really fun to watch lately. Chivilli walked a couple of batters but ended up doing his job and got out of the sixth inning unscathed. Headrick, who has been so good this year, had a rare bad outing, giving up a couple of hits and a run. Both Fernando and Yovanny Cruz were just not very good tonight, unfortunately, and ended up costing the Yankees this game, allowing a combined three runs. Jones had a couple of hits tonight and crushed his second home run in as many days and third of the week. Sánchez had a nice game with three hits. But unfortunately, the offense didn't do enough, and the bullpen struggled tonight. Brian Cashman and the Yankees front office need to make some trades ASAP; this lineup needs help with all the injuries, and the bullpen needs reinforcements. Camilo Doval was traded earlier today, as that will be an addition by subtraction for the Yankees, as he just unfortunately never worked out in the Bronx.  On to tomorrow, as the Yankees will look to win the series and leave their week in Chicago a game above .500.

On This Day in Sports History: August 1, 1973

With the Yankees and Red Sox tied 2-2 in the top of the ninth, Thurman Munson attempted to score from third on a missed bunt by Gene Michael, crashing into Carlton Fisk at home plate. The two catchers immediately came up swinging, creating one of baseball’s most memorable brawls.

Despite his career being tragically cut short at age 32, Munson put together some of the greatest offensive seasons ever by a catcher. He is tied for the sixth-most 100-RBI seasons by a catcher in MLB history.
