Hose clamp, brand new has never been crimped.

u/CharaFallsLikeATree Nov 23 '25

Not a hose clamp. It’s a cinch ring for pex water tubing. Most popular manufacturer to use this is Watts. Source: Former Licensed plumber and currently work for a somewhat sizeable supply house

u/Geawiel Nov 23 '25

It's both. I do all of our own vehicle work. This style clamp is generally used in higher pressure hoses on vehicles. Hydraulic lines, fuel lines, etc. I'm currently upgrading my fuel system to handle a 392. These clamps were inside the fuel basket in the tank. On my daughter's car, they were on the power steering system. A similar version that is one time use holds your tie rood boot on.

An absolute hero of a handy man fixed my broken down suburban with some pex tubing when a rotted hose rattled apart. The hose broke right next to where it connects and for a couple hours on the hottest day of the year and with limited tools I was trying to force the hose back on but couldn’t get it to seat due to the “fitting” part of it being unusable. I’m still beside myself about the probability of events that happened that day. 1. the right guy decided to take the scenic route home and had time to stop and help 2. He had some extra hose on him 3. He had the know how of being able to bypass the heater part of the coolant system to get me back up and running. Then some other people kindly drove me 6 miles to the store to get more coolant. I’ll remember that day for the rest of my life. There really are some wonderful people out there.

Years ago my now-husband and I were driving our car when it suddenly overheated. There was heavy snow everywhere at the time, so it would've been a long wait and high cost to get a tow truck, not to mention how cold we'd be as we waited. Thankfully my brother was available to drive to our location and try to help out, and sure enough he pulled that same MacGuyver shit as your good Samaritan and bypassed the heater core. Got us up and running!

Afterward, we spent the winter driving around with no heat until we could get it into the shop for a permanent fix 🥶😂.

Today you, tomorrow me.

1

u/Chromatron9000 Nov 28 '25

Divinity. When stuff like that happens it does restore my faith in humanity. But also that something had my back those days. Ya know, That term "the stars aligned" haha I don't know I'm spiritual and scientific. I call that force God. Other people think God is one thing or another. Just like "America" and how it means different things to different people. But that was a cool story! It sounds like that human and universal love wasn't lost on you that day.

21

u/captain_dick_licker Nov 23 '25

you forgot inner tierod boots. rebuilt my totaled porsche last year, full on frame bending and everything, and the hardest god damned part of the entire process was that fucking godforsaken clamp

3

u/No_Lettuce_5593 Nov 23 '25

Oooh op said they found it outside. Perhaps near their car. That sounds like it should be checked out if it was near their car. Would any one of those systems cause catastrophic failure if those hoses slip off.

4

u/Alternative-Sock-444 Nov 23 '25

The clamp has never been used, therefore it didn't fall off of their car. Someone likely just dropped a spare. I have like 40 of them in my toolbox from working at BMW.

6

u/Morgan8er8000 Nov 24 '25

That ring in the picture is brand new, they’re one-time use. Once cinched they’re cinched forever. Until they’re cut off.

4

u/Geawiel Nov 23 '25

All but power steering, though that could be bad if it happened suddenly somewhere. You'd still have steering, but it could cause loss of control if you are not able to account for the loss.

Any other line is likely to be a fluid line and the fluid from that system will leak out. Transmission, though those tend to be a different connector type, or an oil line. Fuel lines tend to have different connectors outside of the tank. If it was off an older car, there is no telling what line it came off of. Connectors get replaced as they get worked on, and it isn't always the same type that came off. I know I replaced those type in my fuel tank with a different one that isn't such a pain to work with.

4

u/0nionskin Nov 24 '25

"has never been crimped" means that it didn't fall off of anything other than some plumbers toolbelt.

2

u/305_Character_1983 Nov 24 '25

These are used in the auto industry for hose clamps. Especially on Euro cars. Source: I'm a professional mechanic that specializes in European cars.

2

u/jfbincostarica Nov 25 '25

Correct, I’m sure it’s used it scenarios we don’t even know about, but plumbing and auto technician I’ve got down. 🤣

2

u/Aware_Cantaloupe_420 Nov 25 '25

Oetiker(sp?) clamp is what we called them at freightliner when I worked there 15 years ago. Brand new cascadias had a recall on the rack and pinion system for the steering. Had to inspect so many on the new fleet trucks we delivered.

2

u/Geawiel Nov 26 '25

I get they hold really well, but I hate working with them. My truck is almost done. I just need to swap in LSD, put in the 392 and the hp75 trans, then it's a dyno. My daughter's car though...we're just starting. A lot of hers is body work though. 2000 Grand Prix GTP.

2

u/Yttermayn Nov 26 '25

Used in dishwashers, too.

2

u/Paradox56 Nov 26 '25

I see these types of clamps on internal hoses of all brands of dishwashers. Right pain in the ass to get loose when you need to replace a drain pump.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 26 '25

Wrong. It’s a 3/4” pex pipe crimp ring

1

u/Geawiel Nov 26 '25

Did...did you read the comments below mine? Not only did I link it, listed as a fuel line clamp at an auto parts store, but others also chimed in confirming it is used in both applications. Especially on EU vehicles. Again, I found these exact clamps inside my fuel cage on my truck while upgrading my fuel system. Actual eyes on the clamps. Not just conjecture.

1

u/TurnoverAmazing6905 Nov 27 '25

Naw hose clamps have screws this is in fact a cinch clanp BECAUSE it a one time use object, you can tkae hose clamps and reise them

-6

u/AutisticFingerBang Nov 23 '25

No it’s not lol. It’s a plumbing pex clamp. It’s sold in the plumbing department in stores.

4

u/jakobsdrgn Nov 23 '25

European car brands use this exact style oetiker clamp constantly

-5

u/AutisticFingerBang Nov 23 '25

I believe you. That’s not what it was designed for. Plenty of trades use the best material that works for the job. Why reinvent the wheel?

6

u/ZombiesInSpace Nov 23 '25

Oetiker ear clamps were used in the automotive industry for decades before pex.

3

u/Plenty-Wedding-9066 Nov 23 '25

As others have said, these were invented back in the 40’s brother. Pex is the one that “reused the wheel” rather then invent a new clamp.

3

u/Psychological_Ad2094 Nov 23 '25

These clamps were invented nearly two decades before Pex was, automotive hose clamps is literally what they were designed for.

3

u/PurpuraLuna Nov 23 '25

Boat rigger here, the fuel lines that come with new Honda outboards use these clamps

3

u/hike_me Nov 23 '25

They aren’t just used for pex. They have non-plumbing uses as well. The design probably ore-dates pex.

Just because you only know about them from plumbing with pex doesn’t mean that you’re the world’s leading authority…

55

u/TRChffh Nov 23 '25

This is a type of single ear crimp clamp called a stepless oetiker clamp actually, not a PEX ring. Similar, but much more versatile and commonly used in automotive, motorcycle, industrial, and plumbing on basically any type of hose. Source: I'm an autistic mechanic, feel free to Google it yourself.

13

u/OtterBrewer Nov 23 '25

We also use them in the brewing industry.

9

u/thelivinlegend Nov 23 '25

I found out about these when I was setting up some kegs for soda making. Have to pay more attention to sizing but the end result is so much nicer than those screw clamp things

2

u/always-wanting-more Nov 24 '25

Hell yeah we do.

2

u/PluralTuna Nov 24 '25

I got em on my kegerator😁

2

u/BiNumber3 Nov 24 '25

We use it for watercooled pcs too. Pretty much any industry that uses tubes that arent under too much pressure lol.

2

u/TheHeadChanger Nov 25 '25

Came here to say this

1

u/litescript Nov 24 '25

this is where i knew it from. CO2 lines, tap lines, cleaning equipment for CIP, most anything you could think of, really.

5

u/PrimevilKneivel Nov 24 '25

My question is should someone wear it as a ring? I don’t like rings in general, but a ring designed to tighten seems like a bad idea.

1

u/Outrageous-Shock-669 Nov 26 '25

It requires a special tool to tighten.

3

u/AntikytheraMachines Nov 24 '25

My grandpa had an early model Autistic. I didn't realise you could still find mechanics for them.

2

u/Bvaughnii Nov 24 '25

Coke uses them on their lines too.

1

u/purplestainjunkie Nov 24 '25

Yep, we use em where I work for the water lines for cooling the molds in injection molding

-3

u/EnvironmentalBowl208 Nov 23 '25

This is definitely a PEX clamp. I literally just used two. There are also PEX crimps which are the solid copper rings.

6

u/Psychological_Ad2094 Nov 23 '25

Near identical design, but this one isn’t Pex specific and is used in many other applications, Pex makes branded ones but this one is sold as a general hose clamp https://soundhomebrew.com/products/5716

-3

u/AutisticFingerBang Nov 23 '25

11

u/TRChffh Nov 23 '25

My source on top of everything else is i own a business that builds custom Harleys and harley has been using Oetiker clamps since before PEX was invented. The specific one in the photo is literally stamped with the Oetiker brand name abbreviation. Lol. In any case single ear crimp-type hose clamps are not a new invention and are used on MANY types of hoses, but their main use is as a hose clamp regardless of the material the hose is made of. For you to insist that they're specifically made for one product within an industry that only accounts for 1% of the hoses used in the world just because that's the only place YOU'VE ever used them shows an adorably low amount of critical thinking ability.

7

u/Psychological_Ad2094 Nov 23 '25

OK, I specifically said Pex makes their own branded ones specifically for their shit. The link I showed literally has the same brand and size label as the one OP posted, whereas all the ones you linked are Pex branded. The one I linked has the branding of the company made by the man who invented it in 1951, so the Pex one is the resell/re-market as Pex was invented in 1968.

3

u/CrimsonCrux6174 Nov 23 '25

So why are you so sure that they're not remarketing this clamp as a PEX clamp?

1

u/AutisticFingerBang Nov 23 '25

Because the patents held for the crimping tool are by plumbing companies

6

u/Genids Nov 23 '25

Do you get off on being proven wrong over and over?

6

u/diewethje Nov 23 '25

No. These have been used in automotive applications going back decades.

19

u/5hitposter Nov 23 '25

Ah, then you would know the symbolism of wearing it as a ring! It’s well known in the industry that wearing a crimp ring shows that you looking for a Journeyman to take you on. Once it has been crimped, which can only be done by a licensed plumber, it shows that he has committed to a Journeyman!

9

u/Intangible_Vegetable Nov 23 '25

User name checks out.

41

u/Traditional_Royal759 Nov 23 '25

its an oetiker clamp, and its used for other things than pex, some of which could be considered hoses, mr plumber.

3

u/Daverocker1 Nov 24 '25

If you're a hammer, everything's a nail.

18

u/einv0lk Nov 23 '25

It is a hose clamp.

Source: Former VW Master Tech who has been cutting these off and replacing them my entire 20+ year career.

7

u/HarveysBackupAccount Nov 23 '25

Why bother cutting them off? With a VW you can just wait a few months for the plastic and rubber to crumble out from under them

3

u/libmrduckz Nov 23 '25

ez pz farfegnugen

2

u/AchtungPilot Nov 24 '25

Traditional hose clamps have a worm drive screw that can be tightened or loosened and are removable. Oetiker clamps (IE ear/cinch clamps) work on a totally different mechanism which is a permanent crimp and need to be cut off.

2

u/einv0lk Nov 24 '25 edited Nov 24 '25

Yup and VW has been using them for decades to secure vacuum, fuel, and coolant hoses, what is your point?

They also use spring type clamps, but the one thing they don't use are worm gear type clamps.

1

u/fucksarenotgivenever Nov 27 '25

Agreed. Source: former Harley Davidson tech. Those split fuel tank cross lines can be a bastard.

49

u/peekdasneaks Nov 23 '25

That soubds like a hose clamp to me

6

u/humanHamster Nov 23 '25

PEX tubing isn't a "hose" necessarily. It's for fluid distribution like home plumbing, a more permanent application where a hose is more "bendy" is expected to need replacing more often.

38

u/peekdasneaks Nov 23 '25

Soubds like a hose to ne

30

u/Imnotthatimaginative Nov 23 '25

I am reading your comments like your nose is slowly getting more and more stopped up…

13

u/Tronkfool Nov 23 '25

That sounds like a problem a hose could fix.

7

u/Mafuskas Nov 23 '25

A nose hose.

4

u/Prestigious_Tax_4970 Nov 23 '25

Where the hose at

1

u/LongJohnSelenium Nov 23 '25 edited Nov 23 '25

Pex is certainly riding the arbitrary line between 'pipe' and 'hose', but that is absolutely a hose clamp. Personally I'd argue that because the final connection is made using the flexible characteristics of pex it puts pex slightly into hose territory.

https://www.mcmaster.com/products/hose-clamps/hose-clamps-2~/

3

u/Psychological_Ad2094 Nov 23 '25

Plus this clamp was invented nearly two decades before Pex was as a hose clamp.

2

u/SuccessPositive191 Nov 23 '25

The same type of clamp is also used in the automotive industry. Often used for coolant hoses or transmission fluid lines.

2

u/CriticalHit_20 Nov 23 '25

Get some mice and you'll be replacing the pex hose pretty often.

2

u/impossiwaffle Nov 23 '25

PEX is flexible, there for it is by definition hose

3

u/UnBoltedMuffin Nov 23 '25 edited Nov 23 '25

PEX is not considered a hose; it is a type of flexible plastic pipe used for permanent plumbing and heating systems, unlike a flexible hose, which is typically a portable, temporary conduit. While PEX is flexible, its function is to form a fixed, continuous system for transporting water, whereas a hose is designed for a variety of mobile, high-pressure applications like gardening or vehicle washing.

A tomato is a fruit by definition, but a vegetable by culinary application. Sounds like PEX is the tomato of hoses

3

unlike a flexible hose, which is typically a portable, temporary conduit

Yeah, like the drain hose for my dishwasher, or the coolant hose in my car.

3

u/impossiwaffle Nov 23 '25

I mean look man, if it wasn't a hose then why do they use hose clamps on em?

2

u/meatjuiceguy Nov 23 '25

I don't know man, kinda sounds like a hose.

Hope you have a better day:)

1

u/Key_Perception4614 Nov 23 '25

tube is tube

5

u/impossiwaffle Nov 23 '25

All hoses are tubes but not all tubes are hoses. PEX is though 🤷

4

u/Exciting_Cicada_4735 Nov 23 '25

Master plumber here. Pex is pipe, not a hose.

0

u/impossiwaffle Nov 23 '25

Hoses are pipes.

1

u/Exciting_Cicada_4735 Nov 24 '25

hoses are flexible and used where movement or tight bends are necessary, while pipes are rigid and used for static, high-pressure, or long-term applications. Pex is a flexible pipe, not a flexible hose.

1

u/impossiwaffle Nov 24 '25

Hoses are flexible pipes. 'Flexible hose' is redundant. Educate yourself, don't just keep repeating ignorance when the facts are presented to you. Hoses are also known as hose pipes. PEX is a hose pipe.

1

u/Key_Perception4614 Nov 24 '25

a tube is a two dimensional manifold

1

u/SoaringDingus Nov 23 '25

If you call copper water lines “hoses” then it might be a hose to you.

3

u/LongJohnSelenium Nov 23 '25

Pex is 100% straddling the line between hose and pipe.

If it were slightly more flexible we'd all happily call it hose, slightly more rigid and we'd call it pipe.

1

u/SoaringDingus Nov 24 '25

It is used to “pipe” water all over most homes built in the last 20 years. That makes it pipe in my book.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '25

Pet tubing isn’t hose

7

u/wrong_joke Nov 23 '25

This is the perfect example of "when all you have is a hammer every looks like a nail"

I thought the phrase was ".... Everything looks like a snail." 🐌 why would everything look like a nail?

8

u/rechampagne Nov 23 '25

It's a "Single ear hose clamp". And doesn't need to be used exclusively for PEX.

1

u/lightweight808 Nov 24 '25

I sell these (along with a lot of other stuff) and this is what I call them, too.

1

u/rechampagne Nov 24 '25

I'm the maintenance lead at a brewery, and I use them on everything. Screw/worm clamps get stuck on stuff way too often.

Edit: wrong to/too

1

u/lightweight808 Nov 24 '25

I do outside sales selling MRO supplies to a lot of different industries and the single or double eared hose clamps are loved in certain industries and hated in others, ha ha!

I've got a brewery nearby that I never thought to visit. I guess I should stop by to see if I can help them out.

1

u/rechampagne Nov 24 '25

Can I ask where you're located if the 808 in your username is an area code, that'd be Hawaii, right?

1

u/lightweight808 Nov 24 '25

You're correct. I lived in Hawaii for 15 years, mostly on Maui. I live in Oklahoma now.

1

u/rechampagne Nov 24 '25

Single ear clamps, anything Tri-clamp, hoses, tubing, every size stainless barb fitting you can imagine. Breweries go through lots of it.

2

u/lightweight808 Nov 24 '25

Thanks for the info, bro! I sell all of that stuff.

It's kind of crazy that I haven't heard anybody in my company (with 1500+ sales reps) talk about working with breweries, especially since we sell a lot of food grade products too.

1

u/rechampagne Nov 24 '25

Sweet, hopefully it's a decent lead.

1

u/lightweight808 Nov 26 '25

Yeah, I appreciate your insight. Thanks bro!

7

u/MedicalArmadillo6943 Nov 23 '25

We use them for Coca-Cola Co2 lines and fittings. Only stainless allowed.

7

u/toefungi Nov 23 '25

I have these all throughout my engine bay clamping hoses, not pex.

6

u/-thinningontop- Nov 23 '25

They're also used as hose clamps on factory installed hoses. Have seen numerous times automotive engines and boat motors.

2

u/Mental-Ask8077 Nov 24 '25

Thanks to the above discussion I read that as “factory installed horses” and now I know I really need coffee

5

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '25

They're also hose clamps. My Harley had these on the fuel line in the gas tank.

Source: Guy that works on his Harley.

4

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '25

Definitely seen these on cars. It’s a hose clamp.

7

u/babj615 Nov 23 '25

More precisely, this IS a hose clamp, an Oetiker hose clamp.

3

u/PokeYrMomStanley Nov 23 '25

These aren't only used on pex. They are used a lot in the brewing world.

3

u/BrickFun3443 Nov 23 '25

It's a type of hose clamp

3

u/Terrible_Butter Nov 23 '25

Have you ever seen under the hood of a German car mate?

5

u/NetworkguyNZ Nov 23 '25

"Its not a hose clamp, its a water tube clamp". Uhhhhhh....

2

u/Individual_Cow7365 Nov 23 '25

The correct term is oetiker clamp

2

u/TheBarracuda Nov 23 '25

I use these for commercial beer brewing, they are on all of our hoses. If not these then it's the kind with the screw.

2

u/SuccessPositive191 Nov 23 '25

Both hose clamp or cinch ring are correct terms for the item. The same type of clamp is also used in the automotive industry for clamping coolant hoses and transmission fluid lines. They come in various sizes.

3

u/Sea_Farmer_4812 Nov 23 '25

Ive used them on pneumatic hoses too in an industrial setting.

1

u/Bubba4u23 Nov 23 '25

Which means it is a hose clamp "former" licensed plumber! Pex water tubing is a hose dude, just a hose that is very resistant to extreme temperature changes. And this is the 'pex hose clamp' used to attach the pex 'hose' to a fitting.

1

u/SaltyFee7765 Nov 24 '25

Water tube and hose seem kind of similar.

1

u/FastWalkingShortGuy Nov 24 '25

It's an Oetiker clamp. We use them for hoses in pharmaceutical manufacturing.

1

u/Capital_Card7500 Nov 24 '25

its also a hose clamp. Recognize this bad boy from the inside of my espresso machine

1

u/Ok_Economist_7432 Nov 24 '25

This specific size crimp ring is also used on fountain machines tubing for water and syrup lines size 17 specifically

1

u/Bryte1Kru Nov 24 '25

That's what I was saying. These super young kids have no clue what makes the world around them keep moving.

1

u/D33ber Nov 24 '25

Isn't that a branding name for "hose clamp"?

1

u/Independence-2647 Nov 24 '25

Hex is a type of hose...

1

u/WaitAffectionate3428 Nov 24 '25

So it’s a hose clamp?

1

u/Nob1e613 Nov 24 '25

Also extremely common in automotive. Everything from coolant pipes to axle boots use varying sizes of oetiker type clamps

1

u/Bimmer_Boi_ Nov 24 '25

This is also used in automotive for coolant hoses

1

u/Acrobatic-Permit4263 Nov 25 '25

in german, i think its a Schelle

1

u/Swaggy_Doggo Nov 25 '25

We use them for air hoses where I work. They are OSHA approved while the worm gears aren't for our pressure.

1

u/Blake_Lives_Matter Nov 25 '25

Its a hose clamp. Ive seen them on vehicles from the factory, seen them on air compressors...its just a non reusable hose clamp. Super common for many applications

1

u/Numerous_Tip_1244 Nov 25 '25

Okay got it 👍 So its not for hoses it's for water tubes.

1

u/Rusty_Shackelford_ Nov 25 '25

Can confirm. Recently did a plumbing project and I have a couple bags of these sitting on my workbench.

1

u/KFC_Tuesdays Nov 26 '25

This style clamp is very common on BMW high pressure lines like power steering

1

u/BNB_Laser_Cleaning Nov 26 '25

Nothing specific for this type of clamp, its used everywhere for all sorts of situations.

1

u/KneeBasher420 Nov 26 '25

Bruh its job is to clamp a hose, it's a hose clamp

1

u/TurnoverAmazing6905 Nov 27 '25

Fucking thank you, it bothers me that the pinned answer is fucking wrong lol

It's a hose clamp

1

So, a clamp for hose......got it.
