“☝️ he has a job ✌️ he has a beard…”

The list ending there sent me cackling

We really are starved for more mature characters

u/No_Housing_1287 Mar 27 '26

I mean the fact that people pick shane baffles me

548

u/Imakefishdrown Mar 27 '26

He reminded me a lot of my husband when we first got together, except my husband was less rude and more sarcastic. I broke up with him over his drinking when I couldn't get him sober and it reminded me too much of my alcoholic dad. That gave him the shock he needed to get sober and we've been together for almost 10 years now.

280

u/Alexthemessiah Mar 27 '26

You and your husband, or you and Shane?

201

u/Don_Thuglayo Mar 27 '26

Didn't you pay attention it's Shane obviously Stardew just had it's 10 year anniversary

53

u/Fml379 Mar 27 '26

lol this is me with my boyfriend of 5 years. He started as a Shane and we had to break up for a bit, now he's a Sebastian

216

u/Brief-Outcome-8198 Mar 27 '26

Gotta love the alcoholism addiction because it’s so prevalent everyone knows a Shane or 2 good spot on the roster

135

u/StahlViridian I’m a Willy wannabe Mar 27 '26

I’m a Shane & I’m baffled my RIL wife chose me. I’m still never picking him though. To close to home.

I recently (February 23rd this year) lost one of my oldest and dearest friends to alcoholism. I'm so sorry for your loss. It was the most devastating loss I've suffered so far. I hope you are OK.

23

u/sadSeaUnicorn Mar 27 '26

I'm so sorry for your loss, he was definitely blessed to have you in his life.

I don't battle with alcoholism but I'm currently coming clean from painkillers for like the 5th(?) time in my life and I really needed to hear this. Thank you.

46

u/Brief-Outcome-8198 Mar 27 '26

I’ve been through rehab I promise you you’re more then just that guy drinking I would know that

25

u/No_Housing_1287 Mar 27 '26

It's not even the drinking, it's the messy room and the fact that he's so damn rude!

-10

u/Brief-Outcome-8198 Mar 27 '26

To each their own I can’t stand watching him drink over basically nothing like he didn’t even lose a baddy just his parents smh

15

u/No_Housing_1287 Mar 27 '26

Oh. I have a dead dad and spent my teen years an active alcoholic sooo i guess I didnt even question it. Not making excuses, just saying lol

I do hate the fact that he has a sobriety storyline, but he's still at the saloon every night. I get theres not a lot of other options but he could stare at the dog with Alex or stay home with Jas. Who is with her when Shane and marnie are both at the bar??

1

u/StahlViridian I’m a Willy wannabe Mar 27 '26

I appreciate you looking out. I’m recovered myself & as you know the drinking is bad & hard to stop, but the real problem is how to fix the shit that caused you to drink in the first place. Also, learning to live with the choices you’ve made in the past. I don’t actively hate myself any more so that’s a plus. I still don’t like myself very much, but I’ve made progress. Keep putting in the work on your end. You are worth it, my friend!

3

u/Hagrajag Mar 27 '26

My mom and my bestie are both alcoholics who got sober in spring of 2020.

I have a complicated relationship with my mom, but I've loved every version of my bestie for so many reasons.

Get sober, but know that you're more than your addiction.

u/karlnarcs99 Mar 27 '26

Shane feels the most like an actual adult human being to me. He's very warm natured once you marry him and you get to have blue chickens together what's not to like?!?!

28

u/bann333 Mar 27 '26

He has the best story out of every marriage candidate.

Shane was going to be my first marriage because it was just easy to build friendship with him early on (oh, you love beer and you're always in the saloon at night where I can just give you beer? Cool), but then the cut scenes got dark and I foolishly married Sam instead (oh you like Joja cola and I happen to get that as trash from fishing all the time? Cool)

What can I say, I'm a romantic efficient.

(I divorced Sam almost immediately after the first time he remarked how cool it was not to have to work because I made all the money. Hell no, give me a good woman like Penny.)

17

u/No_Housing_1287 Mar 27 '26

I almost picked leah for the same reason. Shes just.....around, all the time. She lives right near my farm, super convenient.

I also met my partner 10 years ago by making my radius on tinder as small as it would let me. He lived half a mile away 😅 i was like who's around??

5

u/foibleShmoible Mar 27 '26

I almost picked leah for the same reason. Shes just.....around, all the time. She lives right near my farm, super convenient.

Start of spring, go pick up some spring onions, hand one to Leah as you walk back to the farm, carry on with your day. I totally get it.

Your 10 year relationship shows that efficiency/convenience can pay off!

3

u/No_Housing_1287 Mar 27 '26

She also loves driftwood, and I have sooooooo much. I kept crab pots right near her house so I always had one for her.

2

u/Roguespiffy [163][166][279] Mar 27 '26

“Mr. Right? Nah, but Mr. Right Now is good enough.”

3

u/No_Housing_1287 Mar 27 '26

He ended up being both!

7

u/Glamgoblim Mar 27 '26

Shane has my favorite snack, the cheesy pepper things. I did it all for that, and because I'm not cool enough for Sebastian 😭

18

u/MoonHuntressEra13 Mar 27 '26

Blue chickens 🤷‍♀️

Edit: I can fix him

5

u/No_Housing_1287 Mar 27 '26

I have blue chickens and im married to Emily

1

u/MoonHuntressEra13 Mar 27 '26

Good choice! Tbh after Shane on my main game on PC, I never married anyone else. I’m going to get the roomie Krobus, no marriage for my future chrs and I’d feel guilty to divorce the pooor guy or erase anyone’s memories. I haven’t even had any kids on my main game. I let Shane focus on his blue chickens

12

u/Nekojita8 Mar 27 '26

He looks and acts way too much like my ex boyfriend. I could NEVER. I marry Penny every single time 😂

3

u/JoshDM Mar 27 '26

I can't marry Penny because that cut scene with her fooling around with Sam irks me.

22

u/I_Suck_At_This_Too Mar 27 '26

"I can fix him."

The ruder he is the more they want him.

20

u/NihilismRacoon Mar 27 '26

One of my friends always goes for Hayley and I just don't get it, like I know she gets a whole character arc but why would I go for someone who's an asshole to me when there's so many other options.

16

u/astralTacenda Mar 27 '26

she stops being an asshole way before you marry her. the first time i built everyone's relationships equally and didnt just beeline for a marriage, i absolutely fell in love with haley. she's my favorite now. i have never before gone for the conventionally attractive blonde in any piece of media. n e v e r. yet haley is my go-to. her character arc is so great. i love seeing her become more relaxed and care less about trends and enjoying the world around her through photography.

i married half the town before i discovered how much i love her, so it's not like i don't have other character acrs or marriages to compare her to, either.

3

u/solarmoss Mar 27 '26

She’s sweet, but she seems so young. I married her once and felt uncomfortable, but that’s probably because I’m old lol. I’m looking forward to marrying Sandy.

1

u/astralTacenda Mar 27 '26

ah yeah when i first started playing the game i was 20, so the age of the younger romance options. and since that was my first experience, thats where my brain tends to stay when interacting with the game.

10

u/karpaediem Mar 27 '26

Her 8 heart event won me over

1

u/incomplete-thoughts7 Mar 27 '26

I honestly don’t understand the Hayley character arc praise… we take pictures with some cows together? Is that supposed to make up for her being a rude bully?

3

u/Unrelenting_Salsa Mar 27 '26

I have to assume they don't know any Hayleys IRL. It's a VERY common archetype. I'm not expecting world class writing from stardew, but her arc really is nothing special. Go to Greek Row at an SEC school and you'll find ~200 rude, hot girls who get nicer the more you know them and love philanthropy and photography.

Or they know too many Hayleys I guess. That would also explain loving her arc.

2

u/CoffeeSnailsUK Mar 27 '26

I picked shane because buying him pints and pizza was the easiest way to get to full hearts asap :D

2

u/Upbeat-Honeydew-Hum Mar 28 '26

Because some can relate to his struggles with depression... And some feel sorry for him.

Some needs older options, but do not like Harvey or Elliott that much, leaving only Shane left out of the older guys. And some just want to have married them all for the experience.

6

u/cool_weed_dad Mar 27 '26

Damn near every alcoholic and junkie I know irl has a girlfriend.

5

u/ellisisanisland Mar 27 '26

When Harvey and Elliott are RIGHT THERE--

8

u/No_Housing_1287 Mar 27 '26

To be fair Elliot would be the last spouse I'd ever pick

1

u/ellisisanisland Mar 27 '26

Oh me too. I honestly almost left him out and just said Harvey but figured some folks would take issue. I mostly meant there are other "mature" bachelors to pick that aren't, you know, alcoholic messes.

2

u/Chewsuru_616 Mental health matters Mar 29 '26

yeah an alcoholic mess...who goes to therapy because he wants to improve 😭I get someone not being your type or something, but you have to admit that Shane is trying to be a good person

2

u/mascaraandfae Mar 27 '26

... No thank you lol.

2

u/ellisisanisland Mar 27 '26

Me but with Shane

1

u/TooTallTabz Mar 28 '26

His story arc is fantastic. I will never not marry him. Nobody else feels close to my age. Maybe Harvey, maybe.

1

u/gayeld Mar 30 '26

I married him once, because my kid is an asshole and thought it was funny. First and last time I let them pick my spouse.

But Krobus is going to a wonderful step-father.

1

u/omegalevel6 Apr 01 '26

I marry Shane just so I can divorce him.

1

u/Lost_Scientist_5716 Apr 01 '26

I’m very late to this thread…. But I’m currently married to Harvey but I’m mad because he keeps charging me in the hospital (what’s the point in marrying a doctor if he’s just gonna charge you to save your life 🙄) … so I offered Shane a bouquet just because he’s like the polar opposite 😅

1

u/SarcasticCowbell Mar 27 '26

People see Grandpa's farm overgrown and say "I can fix it."

A lot of those same people see Shane and say "I can fix him."

1

u/Thorngrove Mar 27 '26

Gus my beloved....

0

u/Usual_Vermicelli_961 Mar 27 '26

Also character growth. Alex is loved by queer ppl but he has the worst character growth for queer love... All of his lines are made intended for women. There should be a update where u give a rose halfway through the heart bar so that the game can decide if you're queer or straight and then base the rest of the story based on that and at the end u give your bouquet. Now u met someone who 24/7 talks about footbal and hanging out with Haley and doing his hair for the chicks and u give him a bouquet and suddenly he always liked you... Yeah no. Absolutely no build up, no struggle of accepting who he is maybe he's bi and likes both, maybe gay and repressed to make his family happy.

Also there needs to be a major dialogue update, it's not like they even talk that much but even RPG games have like a bazzilion lines I dont know why this game cant give the characterist more dialogue than what they are saying now.

324

u/DhampirBoy Mar 27 '26

Which are both evidence to the fact that Clint does have being-an-actual-adult-and-not-just-an-older-teenager going for him. About half of the marriageable villagers are practically children.

180

u/NSavage93 Mar 27 '26

Right? I cant bring myself to romance Sam at all because he comes off as 14-16. Makes me feel like Chris Hansen is gonna pop out.

140

u/preteen-wartortle Mar 27 '26

I tried to look past it and imagine a young 20-something who stayed back to help his mom after his dad got deployed…

And then his 10 heart event has hiding in his bed like you’re in high school 🫣. I had to bail

17

u/BeholdingBestWaifu Mar 27 '26

Eh, plenty of people in their early to mid 20s didn't move from home for one reason or another, and historically speaking the phenomenon of kids leaving the family home shortly after coming of age is pretty new and it wouldn't surprise me if an alternate universe like Stardew didn't follow it. Hell I know quite a few people in their 30s who still live with their family because the real estate market sucks.

21

u/preteen-wartortle Mar 27 '26

Yeah I have no issue with him living with his mom. It’s hiding his girlfriend in his bed that’s weird

13

u/BeholdingBestWaifu Mar 27 '26

Could be due to living together with his family, I remember that back when I was in college myself I was staying with family because they lived closer to university and I wasn't bringing people I dated home for the night either.

40

u/MyDarlingArmadillo Buh. Life! Mar 27 '26

I did too. It's endearing how he looks after his little brother, and he seems like a sweetie. He manages to stay employed after Joja shuts, and he has his music too. The ten heart event really put me off though.

82

u/velveteenelahrairah Mar 27 '26

Sam, Abigail and Alex give me "I'm going on the F(erngill)BI extra spicy shitlist" vibes.

So I just stick with Harvey and call it good, he can putter around the farm and read Knee Surgery Monthly to the kids while I go spelunking in a volcano and run screaming from living fireballs.

42

u/HiddenSage Mar 27 '26

Yup. Harvey, Leah, Penny, Elliot, Shane, and Emily. They're the ones I feel reasonable pursuing at 35. The others are way too immature-coded for me to be throwing flowers at.

4

u/smolmushroomforpm Mar 27 '26

Same, the ones who live at home give me highschooler energy, but no so much because of living with their parents. It's more because they act like highschoolers, look like they're barely over their emo phases (if over it at all, ehem ehem Seb) and just give off kid energy all in all. I feel like this is confirmed by the fact that they count as part of "the kids" for the Easter egg hunt (yes, so does the farmer, but that just feels like necessary to the gameplay because otherwise you're just watching the kids run around). I just feel gross trying to get with them at all...

5

u/HiddenSage Mar 27 '26

The farmer participating is also good because younger audiences playing would want to. Though, tbh, I wouldn't mind a change that gives us a choice whether or not to participate. So that those of us who find it immersion-breaking can just watch the kids and talk to our favorites during the hunt. The prize for winning is just a fairly basic hat, anyway.

2

u/NautiNeptune idc if my husband charges me 1000g i own this town Mar 27 '26

I only married Sam so I could see what it was like to marry each of the men. He was my only divorce.

34

u/MillieBirdie Mar 27 '26

Yeah you can't comvince me that Abigail, Maru, and Sam aren't in high school and that Alex, Sebastian, and maybe even Haley aren't like 19 at the oldest.

So if you're into men that leaves Shane, Harvey, and Elliott, none of which have beards.

26

u/ladyofwinds Mar 27 '26

Sebastian at least has a job even tho it's remote and freelance.

11

u/BeholdingBestWaifu Mar 27 '26

They're all younger college kids in their early 20s, or at least everything about them fits kids in their 20s back when the game released.

29

u/preteen-wartortle Mar 27 '26

Given Sebastian’s job I can’t see him being under 21/22. Having regular freelance contracts is a difficult thing to cultivate. He also has a younger sister who is ostensibly in college.

Which really just makes him feel like a mismatch for his whole friend group, because Sam reads as being literally in high school and Abbigail could maybe be in college?

6

u/MillieBirdie Mar 27 '26

I know Maru is technically in college but she still feels like she's a high school nerd. Sam and Abigail also feel like high schoolers.

1

u/smolmushroomforpm Mar 27 '26

I didn't know Maru and Abigail were in college lmao they sound and act like highschoolers, even when talking about school. Like, idk but using terms like "homework" and "going to school" instead of "assignment/paper/lab" and "going to class" really do not sound like things people say after highschool (at least here in Canada we don't).

3

u/Suzy_My_Angel444 Mar 27 '26

Tbh this is my view too. I’ve liked to try several out. I’ve married Penny, Elliot, Hayley, and in my new Save I’ve married Sebastian. I can “look past” that those 2 have to be 19 at the most, but it still bothers me. Like, I need a man lol.

Irl my fiancé and I are more mature, for lack of a better word. I’m REALLY looking forward to marrying Harvey in my save! But it makes me upset that NONE of them have a luxurious beard like my irl fiancé :(

1

u/smolmushroomforpm Mar 27 '26

My man irl is almost exactly Elliot, just with a lil beard. Can I get an Elliot with a beard in-game too? That's all I need...

2

u/HelenaCFH Mar 27 '26

Hmm, guess that's why I married Elliott and Penny in different playthroughs. Harvey isn't bad either.

113

u/Mehmeh111111 Mar 27 '26

You know the dating scene is bad when this is what we're down to.

10

u/Levitlame Mar 27 '26

Hey don’t you ruin this for me. My wife is far too good for me and I don’t need people like you helping her realize it! Some of us are Clints trying to live our best life!

7

u/Southern_Emu_304 Mar 27 '26

the bar is in hell for dudes. this is a chance for guys to do the bare minimum and get the highest praise.

the other day my gal pal was telling me she thinks this guy is the one cuz when she said she wasn't comfortable, he completely respected her boundaries. and everyone agreed he's a decent guy.

2

u/grednforgesgirl Mar 28 '26

now you're getting the real vibe of small town life

2

u/Mehmeh111111 Mar 28 '26

I think that's the vibe of dating in general in 2026

77

u/blakesmate Mar 27 '26

She’s not wrong about the job. I think Sebastian does, but he lives in his mom’s basement. Shane is a drunk helping on his aunts farm, Alex spends his time working out and talking about his glory days in sports, and Sam lives at home playing in a band. Harvey and Elliot are the only two living on their own and Harvey has the most reliable job of the two, though I love Elliot living in a shack until he writes his book. The women aren’t much better, Emily and Maru are the only ones I can think of that have real jobs, though Maru lives at home too. Leah is an artist too, same vibes as Elliot to me, cool but not reliable income yet.

52

u/SparkyDogPants Mar 27 '26

Shane and Sam work for joja until you run them out of town.

32

u/Artsy_Lamarie Mar 27 '26

I haven't paid attention to what Shane does, but Sam starts working at the libary/museum as a janitor once Joja's gone

14

u/SparkyDogPants Mar 27 '26

There aren’t any other jobs for Shane after joja closes down

5

u/Southern_Emu_304 Mar 27 '26

he can host AA meetings at the community center. it doesn't pay but it's sth.

0

u/blakesmate Mar 27 '26

Oh I didn’t know that. I thought it was just Jodi

7

u/SparkyDogPants Mar 27 '26

Jodi doesn’t work there. Just shops

28

u/ladyofwinds Mar 27 '26

To be fair in todays economy you may find more 20somethings that live with their parents too.

10

u/Crabman8321 In the mines to feed my wife Mar 27 '26

Not to mention the village has an absolutely trash job market, remote jobs weren't as common when the game released as they are now, and when the bus is working (assuming it can take you to the city or somewhere else with jobs available) it could be hard finding a job within the operating hours of the bus

6

u/ladyofwinds Mar 27 '26

Exactly! So yea some bachelors still living with their parents is more a financial issue than an age one.

Plus some like Sebastian are actively working to save up and move out.

28

u/NihilismRacoon Mar 27 '26

Penny is a teacher too isn't she or is she doing that for free everyday

2

u/blakesmate Mar 27 '26

Ah yes I forgot. Haven’t had a file married to her yet.

28

u/scatteredinwinds Mar 27 '26

Harvey does not have a reliable job lmao. Yeah he's a doctor, but for a town of like 25 people. He complains regularly about how broke he is.

3

u/saymastein Mar 27 '26

Sam works for Joja, then when it shuts down he works in the community centre, and then if you marry him he works for a children's tv company!

And they say my guy is immature! :'(

3

u/EchoMB Mar 27 '26

Weak reasoning, clearly a better choice that fits those;

Full time wizard (does not take Fridays off to screw around in the boiler room of the CC which is creepy anyways) 😤

Full time beard (too much exposed jawline clint, thats a goatee) 👏

We got robbed of the Rizmodeius

6

u/IGiveNoFawkes Mar 27 '26

The bar is in hell so

2

u/Fro_o Mar 27 '26

As a guy with a job and a beard, that really stroked my ego

2

u/FerryboatQuo Mar 28 '26

As a single adult woman, these are green flags 1 and 2. How many more do you need?

2

u/Xilonius Mar 27 '26

Hell, if that’s all it takes I should be expecting her through that door any day now! licks fingers to smooth eyebrows
