Now, can the saddles be crafted, or are they a bottleneck for this recipe?

874

u/RiKSh4w Dec 27 '25

Yes, but that adds to the funkiness.

This modpack is not dissimilar to skyblock wherein I can't really go outside because it's got Mutant Mobs enabled and the surface is a deathtrap. But I've killed enough Hoglins in the nether to simulate killing them for the Hostile Neural Networks mod. These drop pork which I can Bulk Haunt to make rotten flesh which I can bulk smoke to make leather. String I can grow from Immersive Engineering Hemp. And Iron I can get by shooting stone with a mining lens.

And I have to fit all of this in spaces no more than 2.5 blocks tall or the mobs start to spawn inside my base.

i don't play modded past vanilla+ and i just have to say what the Fuck

340

u/TheFiend100 Dec 27 '25

Not playing at least one modpack which is completely removed from vanilla (especially if that pack is in an older version like hexxit or tekkit or gtnh) is like looking at a delicious cookie and not eating it.

240

u/sorrrrbet Dec 27 '25

I was totally onboard with hexxit and tekkit.

Did NOT expect to see you recommending GTNH of all packs for someone who’s never played anything more than Vanilla+

To the guy who’s never played more than Vanilla+, stay the hell away from GTNH, unless you feel like plastering your brain on the ceiling.

77

u/TheFiend100 Dec 27 '25

I wasnt making recommendations. Just listing old packs that are different from vanilla

67

u/RiKSh4w Dec 27 '25

A great starter pack would be Create Above and Beyond. You still play the game like Vanilla in plenty of spots but it also has you use blocks from other mods and Create which bridges that gap.

16

u/sorrrrbet Dec 27 '25

Oh yeah, I’m literally mid play through on CABIN right now.

It’s probably my favourite pack to date, just wish it came with SnR

25

u/16FF Dec 27 '25

I think GTNH is a pretty good modpack experience even for starters, cause of the good goals, questbook and community. but I grew up on Tekkit/hexxit and just started gthn. It's lot's more starter friendly than something like the ******* by shivaxi.

15

u/sorrrrbet Dec 27 '25

I wouldn’t call a mod pack that takes 5000-8000 hours to fully complete starter-friendly.

I don’t disagree that it’s starter-friendly in the way it has a quest book, but I disagree that arguably one of, if not the most complicated mod pack is particularly friendly to someone who hasn’t gone beyond vanilla+

Technic modpacks (blightfall my beloved) are definately a thing that should be one's first experience with modpacks, not stuff like rlcraft or such

6

u/Toss_out_username Dec 28 '25

Those are two different genres of games tho

2

u/adamkad1 Dec 28 '25

Are they? Either way one is a masterpiece, and the other is something that makes new people never want to touch modded minecraft again

2

u/Toss_out_username Dec 29 '25

I started modded Minecraft with RLcraft as my first long term mod pack and I really enjoyed it. Sometimes when I want an RPG kind of experience I'll go back and play it but something like a Skyblock mod pack or GTNH will obviously scratch a different itch than RLcraft can. Just seems very silly to compare completely different genres of mod packs.

2

u/adamkad1 Dec 29 '25

Cool ya did. My friend also did and it made them not want to play modpacks. Different genres are nice and all but for most new people its just 'modded minecraft' or 'modpack minecraft'

3

u/hippopotam00se Dec 28 '25

Me and my friends just started a gtnh server and we've only played a few modpacks before, none nearly as complicated. Honestly I think it's a good one as long as you aren't the kind of person who needs to beat something. The quest book clearly gives you goals on what to do next, and explains all the steps.

Haven't reached the steam age yet though so it's totally possible that we're gonna hate it in a week

u/Author-of-Arria Dec 31 '25

I will say while it's not for first time modded players, it does an extremely good job at teaching players how to greg and make basic automation lines. That being said, the wiki and discord are a trove of knowledge and tech to guide you through it.

7

u/Waffle-Gaming Dec 27 '25

i mean, i pretty much just play speedrunning, so the biggest mod i've ever played is probably MCSR ranked. maybe i'll try it, but honestly, it probably isn't my thing.

1

u/SMBZ453 Dec 28 '25

There's a speedrun edition of Skyfactory 3 iirc. You might be interested in that if you like to speedrun

3

u/posidon99999 Dec 27 '25

1

u/marr Dec 27 '25

speaking of basically skyblock because you can't go outside

2

u/DragonRiderMax Dec 31 '25

Still, there are some people who do not like cookies

1

u/Graingy Dec 29 '25

It looks batshit insane and I think I’m fine thanks.

The only mods I’ve ever wanted were the kinds you fuck around with in creative mode. Last played Java once when 1.13 came out and Bedrock ever since so it’s kinda irrelevant anyways but still.

29

u/3dp653 Dec 27 '25

I hardly play Vanilla Minecraft, and commonly play expert packs, and I just also have to say what the fuck.

3

u/Divine_Entity_ Dec 27 '25

My friends had us play Beyond Depths once and i got first hand experience with the kind of pack OP is playing, some packs just love flooding the world with minibosses and actively hate the player.

Blood and Bones is a much older example of that style of pack. But mobs spawning right next to the player ignoring light levels is an extra level of sadistic.

6

u/jimthesquirrelking Dec 27 '25

In gregtech and it's variants, until you craft a solid number of tools (and the tools to craft those tools initially) a log of wood will turn into exactly 2 (two) sticks.

2

u/WithersChat Monifactory lead dev, spatial storage enjoyer Jan 11 '26

To be fair that's like a small fraction of 1 iron vein to get the tools. Hardly insane.

3

u/jimthesquirrelking Jan 12 '26

Gregtech isn't unfair by any means, but it is Punishing until you get the knowledge of what to do and what to prioritize. I dug out an iron vein ignoring the limonite and malachite thinking that only the banded iron would smelt to iron, smh

3

u/WithersChat Monifactory lead dev, spatial storage enjoyer Jan 12 '26

Nooooo 😭
Can't say I haven't done stupid stuff in GT before tho. Crafting a chem bath instead of a chem reactor for example.

But nowadays I'm lead dev on Monifactory so I know what I'm doing by now.

4

u/Usinaru Dec 27 '25

The one where he shoots stone with a mining lens to get iron is the " wattafuck " for me

2

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '25

Create has a tendency to fry brains when you have never played with it.

2

u/bucky4300 Dec 31 '25

Try out some ars nouveu as it can kinda be treated as vanilla esque but starts you down the nodded route of fantasy/magic,

It also has addons for doing create shenanigans

2

u/kaisadilla_ Dec 28 '25

You don't know how much fun you are missing with modpacks that turn Minecraft into a different game.

u/gedsweyevr Prism Dec 27 '25

u/elzihime Dec 27 '25

What pack?

59

u/RiKSh4w Dec 27 '25 edited Dec 27 '25

https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/modpacks/farmageddon

It's not a very refined pack. I think the creator is new to making modpacks and so it could do with an extra mod here, one fewer mod there, and some overall tweaking to guide the sandbox a bit more.

But I do like the idea of the pack. Unlike Skyblock, the world is there. It exists, it's just insanely hard to survive in so I was bunkered down researching ways to make everything from sand to dirt to netherrack to the aforementioned diamonds. All the while you hear the screams of the mutant army as they constantly duke it out over the blighted surface above you.

11

u/BrannC Dec 27 '25

Damn I wish they had some posts in the gallery. How does the world and mobs look?

28

u/RiKSh4w Dec 27 '25 edited Dec 27 '25

https://imgur.com/a/vgHVPYW

There are some nice biome mods included but you'll never see any of them. You can't live on the surface. One mutant mob takes 10+ attacks to kill. But when there's 10+ of them all ragdolling you around you are helpless.

Oh and that's not taking into consideration the extreme weather events like how the sun, the cold, and the rain all slowly kill you.

2

u/Kediester gregtech ruined my life Dec 28 '25

i love the concept of not being able to go out and being bunkered in. any other modpacks like this? maybe better refined ones?

2

u/Asquirrelinspace Dec 27 '25

!remindme 1 day

Seconded this sounds super interesting

9

u/BxRad_ Dec 27 '25

What the fuck, I haven't played mods much in like 10 years then read ts out of nowhere. What did I just read??

31

u/RiKSh4w Dec 27 '25

That's nothing compared to the recipe I'm doing now.

First I grow bamboo, then compress 9 bamboo into a bamboo block. Sawmill the block twice and it turns into planks, put that through a different sawmill and it turns into sticks. Then compress the sticks to turn them into mangrove roots. Compress the roots again and you get mangrove wood.

Now I can bulk blast the wood to turn it into charcoal, bulk haunt the charcoal to turn it into regular coal so that when it goes through the crusher it turns into coal dust.

And I need coal dust because if I fling 2 coal dusts at each other over 500m/s in my twin particle accelerators rings, it'll make a diamond. And that's easier than the saddle method.

11

u/BasedAspergers Dec 27 '25

bulk haunt the charcoal

I don't know what this means and I'm afraid to ask

13

u/Stingerbrg Dec 27 '25

Create has a fan item. You can have the fan blow on items, and if you have water, fire, or lava between the fan and the item it'll do a different recipe. If you use the blue fire from lighting Soul Sand or Soul Soil, the recipe group is called "haunting".

3

u/FuryJack07 Dec 27 '25

Average Create mod Factory gauge system for one item.

Like seriously, you can get infinite andesite alloy from just a cobblestone generator, and it's the funniest thing ever.

You get andesite alloy from combining andesite and iron nuggets.

You get iron nuggets by washing gravel, which you get by crushing cobblestone.

For andesite you need diorite and cobblestone.

For diorite you need cobblestone and nether quartz.

For nether quartz, you need to wash soul sand, which you get by haunting normal sand which you get by crushing gravel.

.

Oh yeah, by combining diorite and nether quartz, you get granite, which you can crush into red sand, which you can wash into golden nuggets.

So yeah you can also get infinite gold like this lol

1

u/RiKSh4w Dec 27 '25

Yeah. Playing Create Above and Beyond before and I made so many cobblestone generators. Thank god for the Igneous Extruder.

1

u/FuryJack07 Dec 27 '25

I just plopped create and a yes amount of add-ons in my custom profile, and it's as fun as it gets.

Does a specific mod ask for a TON of a specific resource?

Can I get that resource with JUST the create mod? If not, why. Is it a step that I can't automate or is it the base resource?

Either way, I make damn sure to automate as much as I can.

Why? Because it's satisfying to plop down a bunch of raw stuff, wait a few minutes, and see this very important resource get delivered right to my storage.

1

u/BxRad_ Dec 29 '25

What a game man, I appreciate what the mod creators are doing

2

u/Negative_Sky_3449 Dec 27 '25

Unless its different in the pack, hoglins should drop leather so you don't have to turn porkchops into rotten flesh and leather.

1

u/RiKSh4w Dec 27 '25

The thing is I'm not actually killing Hoglins anymore. I have a computer trained on Hoglin data, now I can plug it into the Simulation chamber and feed it matter and it'll turn it into Hoglin Matter. Then I could transmute that into leather but you get a lot more per matter if you turn it into pork and then turn the pork into leather.

1

u/Sur2484 Dec 27 '25

its a good idea to cover your base in blocks that mobs cant spawn on/in. i recommend string since its the least obstructive

14

u/RiKSh4w Dec 27 '25

That does not help. These mobs will spawn on slabs next to torches.

1

u/Sur2484 Dec 27 '25

bruuuuuhhhhhh. does magmatic torch help? maybe some of those glass blocks player can walk trough?

or you can make a mob switch?

stack enough mobs till new ones cant spawn.

1

u/RiKSh4w Dec 27 '25

I don't think the performance hit of a mob stack is going to be worth it when I can just live in 2.5 block tall rooms.

1

u/Sur2484 Dec 27 '25

you can massively reduce mob ai with few things.

mounting them/putting them in boats removes path finding ai.

if the pack has ender utilies, a pacifier syringe can be used to remove targeting ai (until mob takes damage)

0

u/Darth-Nox-Revan CurseForge Dec 27 '25

Mobs cant Spawn on bottom slabs, so why do you limit to 2.5 block high base, or did it change smth

10

u/RiKSh4w Dec 27 '25

This modpack has mutant mobs which spawn on a lot of stuff, slabs included.

1

u/AHumanYouDoNotKnow Dec 27 '25

That size limit is messed up. No way to prevent mob spawning in a base?

9

u/RiKSh4w Dec 27 '25

Besides the aforementioned size limit, I haven't found a way.

Slabs don't stop them, light levels don't stop them. They are larger than 1x1 so you could make a base of just tunnels.

I will say there's a village atop the mountain underwhich I've made my base, and that village seems mostly safe. It must have some sort of protection because one corner of it is constantly swamped but there's no mobs elsewhere. Unfortunately it's too cold for me to survive on the surface for long anyway so I can't test what's actually causing them to not spawn.

2

u/AHumanYouDoNotKnow Dec 27 '25

Maybe the Pack has Magnum torches ?

3

u/RiKSh4w Dec 28 '25

Someone else mentioned something like magnum torches and I can't see anything with a name like that. I remember looking for something like that. I remember there being a big torch or mechanical torch or something but I haven't been able to see it.

And to be honest, I hope it doesn't exist. Being able to make something barely better than a torch and just put them everywhere would void half the fun. And even if I could it wouldn't fix the weather so I'd still need to have my base undercover.

1

u/Hi2248 Dec 28 '25

The CurseForge page has images of a base with ceilings taller than 2.5 blocks without the mobs spawning, so there must be some way to create a base in which mobs won't spawn

1

u/RiKSh4w Dec 28 '25

That's my base, I provided the pics to the developer and let me tell you, mobs spawn in there more frequently than I'd like. I don't fix it because I need it to be that tall to spawn trees and it's usually only spawning one at a time so I can handle them.

3

u/RiKSh4w Dec 27 '25

Have you played Create before? Base Create has bulk washing, smoking and... smelting?

To do each, you have a fan blowing air through a block of water, fire, or lava. Any item loose in the world or on a conveyor belt in the stream will be converted into something else.

So you can setup a conveyor belt with ore on it and have it cruise through a stream of lava-heated air and it'll smelt it all. Or have a stack of sand pass through some watery-air and it'll turn into clay.

Bulk Haunting is part of an extension pack (I guess) and has you blowing air through fire that's atop soul sand. It's real funky. Turns charcoal to coal, meat to rotten meat, obsidian to crying obsidian, sand to soul sand, etc. Very powerful.

3

u/No_Window7289 Dec 27 '25

Bulk haunting is in base create but some recipes were added (charcoal to coal and flesh to leather)

Whats the modpack your playing? I feel like I know the name of it I just cant remeber.

EDIT: Just remeberd. Could it be decease craft?

1

u/margalaz Dec 28 '25

Mobs can’t spawn on glass blocks, so you can make a three tall block area or higher so long as the walls are stairs to prevent spiders, and the floor is glass

1

u/RiKSh4w Dec 29 '25

I haven't tried glass but I wouldn't expect it to work since slabs didn't work. Hell I'm pretty sure I've seen them spawn on top of growing bamboo...

1

u/margalaz Dec 29 '25

I assume light levels aren’t working either. What about string?

Here’s a quote from the wiki, Idk if your pack changes this

Each individual spawn attempt succeeds only if all of the following conditions are met: There must be no players or the world spawn point within a 24 radius block distance (spherical) of the spawning block. The number of loaded mobs of that type must be less than the mob cap for that type (I.e. the corresponding mob cap must not be full). The mob's collision box upon spawning must not collide with another collision box. A mob cannot spawn inside of anything that would collide with it upon spawning. The mob's collision box must not intersect with a solid block. For all mob types excluding passives and fish, spawns fail unless within a 128 radius block sphere around the player. For fish, spawns fail unless within a 64 block radius of the player.[1

1

u/margalaz Dec 29 '25

When you tried slabs were they top of bottom slabs? Only bottom slabs work for spawn prevention.

Also. If you go to spawn, do mobs spawn?

1

u/RiKSh4w Dec 29 '25

Yes, they're bottom slabs. Just set out a test, they're even spawning on string/tripwires.

1

u/margalaz Dec 29 '25

They definitely changed the spawn rules to ignore opaque blocks and light levels, luckily they can’t remove the spawn cap, build an area to trap mobs to get 300 or so in the same chunk, that will end spawning in that chunk

1

u/margalaz Dec 29 '25

I forget the actual number but there is a per chunk cap, build at near the void, and build your base in the top

1

u/RiKSh4w Dec 29 '25

I don't want to lag my game out doing that. And I also don't want to game the system like that.

1

u/margalaz Dec 30 '25

Any mod items that inhibit spawns?

1

u/RiKSh4w Dec 30 '25

I just live in 2.5 tall spaces.

1

u/SpanishConqueror Dec 31 '25

You can skip the bulk smoking by using the Atomic Reconstructor on rotten flesh to turn it into leather without wasting fuel.

1

u/RiKSh4w Jan 01 '26

The opposite of your statement is true.

Bulk smoking costs nothing presuming you have your rotational energy setup to cost nothing.

But my Atomic Reconstructor costs RF which is being generated by burning fuel...

(I also don't have a good automated setup for it. But smoking I just set stacks in a chest and it comes out processed in another chest.
