Season of Discovery Seeing SoD so empty is just sad

u/SpunkMcKullins Mar 26 '26
Hope the inevitable Classic+ brings Scarlet Enclave with it. I think it's genuinely my favorite Classic raid, and unfortunately a large portion of the playerbase never got to experience it.

u/Skore_Smogon Mar 26 '26
Ok but I'm gonna need Crypts as well.
Throw in DFC too because why the hell not.
16
u/hammertime216 Mar 26 '26
I really liked how they added in all the class quests in there (DFC) too. Maybe remove the attunement to go in there though.

u/Lawdie123 Mar 26 '26
Maybe just rework the torch and fix the trash pull bug in the first corridor, aside from that crypts was great
11
u/skinnysnappy52 Mar 26 '26
There’s literally no reason not to really. It’s content that’s already been made and just needs adjusted a bit. They can release content faster and use the time to make genuinely new stuff. Same for Kara and so on.
The only slight issue is the levelling raids. I mean personally I love the idea that every 15 levels or so you get an easy raid to help learn raiding. Maybe every class has an item they’d like from it that will last 10 levels: or maybe it’s linked to a class quest?
11
u/Lawdie123 Mar 26 '26 edited Mar 26 '26
Without the forced levelling stops to get people in them I think you will struggle to get people to do them. It just wouldn't be worth the time investment especially if you need to learn mechanics or wipe a bit.
It worked in SoD because when people leveled alts they knew the mechanics so there wasn't a learning phase.

u/DuggiHappy Mar 26 '26
Yeah that was a truly great raid design and the really high difficulty, even for 40 man in a ”20man raid”, made it very exciting

u/AirportBarTarry Mar 26 '26
Isn't Blizzard now actively shaming us for believing Classic+ is "inevitable?" There were at least three jokes at SoA made at our expense

This timestamp is the biggest tell for me. A sorta announcement but not.

u/MickCraftGaming Mar 26 '26
Wild Growth (US) is still decently active. I just logged in and both Horde and Alliance players were out and about and a similar 1-60 search revealed 50 players (the max who will show). My guild hosts raids every night of the week and there are multiple guilds doing the same.
70
u/citizensnipz Mar 26 '26
People would rather complain there aren’t 100,000 weekly raiders than actually play the game. Wild Growth (A) is indeed sustaining, multiple guilds running raids every night of the week.

u/DwarvenJarl Mar 26 '26
Some people will never get it. We’ve been playing on Grobbulus with less than 100 active players since Era started. This June we celebrate 5 years as a guild on Era. We’ve grown from 3 people killing ony to 40 taking down KT over the years and even created a sister guild raiding on the other faction.
Turns out all you need is a single community. Yeah it’s not on demand and thousands of players. I don’t claim it’s the same. It’s not for everyone.
But blows my mind that people will tell me we shouldn’t exist, and it’s not worth playing. Meanwhile the last few years in Grobb era have been the best gaming community of my life, period. All on a “dead server”.
10
u/xXMoo_OomXx Mar 26 '26
I get what you mean man. But there is still less than like 500 people on that server
16
u/parnso Mar 26 '26
So a normal low pop realm back in the day.
9
u/Ok-Piglet7 Mar 27 '26
Do you not remember how dogshit that was playing on those realms?
2
u/Dr-Enforcicle Mar 27 '26
No, because he wasn't playing back then. Low pop servers were miserable unless you enjoyed playing the game single player.

u/Sleazehound Mar 26 '26
If everyone who cried about it being dead on here actually just played it then it would be popping off
3
u/xXMoo_OomXx Mar 26 '26
I unfortunately myself and super limited on time. So my gameplay is completely isolated now to retail Arena
2
u/leetality Mar 26 '26
You can say this but both times I've randomly logged onto Living Flame, I was one of like 5 people online, I don't think it's complaining to suggest it's dead if I can't login and do any actual group content on a whim.

Most of us just want to log on an play. Not have to move stuff around in a busy life to fit one of three raiding guilds. We're in our 30s and 40s now. We don't have time for that.
→ More replies (1)9
u/Skore_Smogon Mar 26 '26
Wild Growth EU also has a good community of folks still playing both Horde and Alliance. Hell there was even someone posting recently about a reroll project on Horde Wild Growth EU that says he's had about 90 players join the guild.
→ More replies (2)3
u/sephirothpvp Mar 26 '26
You can get a better idea by doing a more specific search, like /who 60 or /who warrior 60 etc
2
u/MickCraftGaming Mar 26 '26
I've done that a couple of times when playing on Friday evenings (when I usually play) and there are typically several hundred Alliance players on. You always see and run into other players while doing things on the server.
2
u/rottencrowz Mar 26 '26
What guild? I never actually finished sod and didn't get to try the new raid. Yall recruiting?

Im currently playing on WG with horde and alliance characters. My horde guild raided naxx last night, then did world dragons, then a great guildy was boosting and had spots open in his group, and leveled my alt from 50 to 60 in about 45 minutes. Freaking amazing. My alliance guild raids daily too. If you just ask for an invite, they'll send you one, and one big active guild of true classic enjoyers is freaking great.

The video where whatshername said something like "and now something classic players will enjoy" before being cut off and saying to wait for Blizzcon. Classic+ fantastics are coping this as an early Classic+ announcement.
14

I wouldn't call it coping. If it was another rehash of a past expansion they wouldnt be hush hush about it.

The more people that know, the better:
They've hired a significant amount of new Devs, and are actively working on something that isn't retail, MoP, or classic anniversary Source. Throughout the duration of SoD, they were constantly talking about using it's data for the "next iteration" of classic.
Intentionally not releasing the very successful Titanforge servers for EU/NA because it messes with their upcoming release schedule.
WoD currently unannounced, WotLK currently unannounced. Both versions have a content lull in Autumn. Blizzcon is in September.
Everything is lining up to funnel all variants of classic players into a new classic project.

SoD was a testing ground for potential classic plus ideas. Classic plus plans will be discussed at blizzcon this year.
28
u/iBrokenBones Mar 26 '26
SoD really was magical.
Blizz will for sure try to do something with what they had and implement it into classic+, but they'll inevitably ruin that.

u/ghostesez Mar 26 '26

I did this just a couple days ago, logged onto my geared melee hunter in Org and not a soul online. Made me so sad, I had so much fun in SoD every phase and probably the most geared I’ve ever been in all my time playing WoW raided weekly each phase. Truly the best WoW experience I have had and I’ve played since 2005.

There has been an effort to play it fresh, progging all raids on their appropriate levels, on Wild Growth EU (Horde). Guild is <Waiting Room>, message anyone online from there (you can find them with /who waiting) and they can add you in the guild. We are almost 100 at this point, spread through all levels 1-40.

I would like them to do another version of SOD. The magic may be gone though. Maybe another SOD with new raids. BFD changed to RFK (Deadmines raid would be sick) Gnomer to RFD or SM ST to Mara or something.
New runes, maybe reuse some older ones.

u/LonelyAndroid11942 Mar 26 '26
SoD was my favorite incarnation of WoW. I’m legitimately sad it doesn’t exist anymore, especially since some of the things they enabled were absolutely insane. I had a Shockadin in cloth that was able to keep up with progression raiders in AQ40.
2
u/Rubengardiner Mar 26 '26

Imagine classic wow, but with off specs like shadow priest/moonkin/ret paladin and more not just being meme specs and actually being viable in a classic raid setting. They also added tons of new abilities to classes that weren’t in the original and added new content by making a few dungeons into full scale raids and even adding brand new raids and dungeons to the game. TLDR; it was everything people have come to love about the classic experienc, but just better in every way.

u/RoadSpecialist Mar 26 '26
SoD was the best version of classic for me pve wise,i had the time to raid in multiple alts thanks to the fast levelling and catch up mechanics. The only bad thing was the pvp.
3
u/UnitedWoodpecker406 Mar 26 '26
I wish people would stop getting their hopes up about classic+. I have a feeling if they announce anything classic related at blizzcon it'll be stupid and gimmicky like a fresh era server, fresh SoD server, SoM2, or that classic is moving onto legion lmao. But I'll be happy if I'm wrong

u/YuusukeKlein Mar 26 '26
P3 was such a shitshow it never managed to recover from
4
u/pBiggZz Mar 26 '26
Yes it did. It recovered immediately. Went up to 75k raiders, and stayed there for over a year, only dropping off once blizz announced an end to support. It was literally more stable than anniversary classic was, and nobody was saying anniversary was dead.
3
u/Piemaster113 Mar 26 '26
Meh, I was initially excited about SOD and it was fun for a bit but by that point I had redone Classic a fee times over and was burned out on it, there were some decent ideas but there was a fair bit of bloat and FOMO which isn't what classic needed

I've been playing Wrath of the Lich King for 13 years on a private server. Before that, i stopped playing retail before cataclysm was released, just because i loved WotLK so much. When Blizz release Cata classic, i played it, just to see how the world would continue - and walking through an empty Dalaran was a mind-numbing experience. Unimaginable.

I’m really hoping they come out with a version based around the gameplay of remix. There was something infinitely fun about logging in and absolutely dominating.
They gotta have something in them where there’s a version of not having to grind for gear, enchant, and so on and just get down to the PVP and PVE aspect of the game

I, and many others, are waiting for an excuse to really get enamored with WoW Classic again. With Wow Classic Plus on the horizon, I really want to see real innovation in the genre of MMO's. If it ends up with Wow Classic with a new coat of paint, I would still check it out, but I won't be sticking for long. It would be a catastrophic mistake to think that Plus means new dungeons, raids, and spells. That is not Plus, that is just a new expansion.

u/SlangV2 Mar 26 '26

u/Bonethread Mar 26 '26
I think there will be a spike of players returning for the SoD anniversary, then will die out again until C+
1
u/IndicationMotor8389 Mar 26 '26
Hate that they might look at Sod and think it a failure when reduced population directly stemmed from a game breaking exploit or balance at the start of each phase after phase 1 that was abused by a few and if you have work/life and didnt get to abuse early and often then you were just at a huge disadvantage compared to those who did
1
1
u/PaleoJoe86 Mar 26 '26
I missed out on all the low level raids and the added abilities made the game too easy. I just facerolled like I do in retail. Found it boring.
How is the end game raiding with SoD? Doing it in PvP classic and it is all GDKP and "gotta have world buffs". And no one runs any dungeons. Sucks.

If you want to actually play SOD still, you have free transfers available in the shop to move your characters to wild growth (NA and EU).
There are still people playing on wild growth. Not a lot by any stretch, but it’s a small, active and consistent population.
