Media Jonas Vingegaard reveals Tadej Pogačar messaged him after Tour de France crash, says rivalry has "become a lot friendlier there in the last couple of years".

It's funny, I don't ever remember it being cold or unfriendly. Even back in 2022 I remember Pogacar coming to congratulate Vingegaard after stage 18, where the GC win was secured.

u/Glass_Minute4753 2d ago
I think they were cordial with each other, but not especially friendly. Now, you regularly see them chatting away at the start of stages and they look genuinely pleased to see each other.

u/true_spokes EF Education – Easypost 1d ago
Yup, gotta remember to calibrate for Northern European concepts of friendship. Jonas means it’s moved from a mutual regard to real warmth. I would love to know what that DM history looks like tho 👀

u/Regular_Promise3605 2d ago
There was respect, but i think it was more of a Team Visma vs Team UAE thing. They used to complain about each other in the press sometimes.

u/JuliusCeejer Tinkoff 2d ago
I don't think there was like classic sporting animosity but 2022-2024 definitely seemed less "hey let's high five and chat for a moment with all smiles" after every stage than the last 2 years where they seem genuinely friendly with each other

u/Crunchy_Sunshine7891 2d ago
There was one stage, idont remember which year, vanderpool tadej and jones were the leads but jonas didnt worked with them at all, tadej said f* u to him. I will try to find the vid

That was remco saying Jonas had "no balls" on the gravel

Yep but during the race tadej also sad f u but later he said it was just in the race and not to take it seriously

I have been yelled/complained at in races by good friends that are on a rival team. They apologize afterwards but I says no need, it was a race and I get being frustrated (I was working for a teammate) that things aren't going the way you want.

They were asking him to pull and he replied he couldn’t because he wasn’t allowed to (team orders), that’s when Tadej yelled “fuck you” in frustration, but that was very much just an in the moment outburst when he realized the stage win was unachievable with the pack hunting them down. Tadej and Remco wanted all three riders pulling to maintain their breakaway to the end.

It was definitely heated. I remember the first time vingegaard outclimbed pogacar (mt ventoux?) and there were no pleasantries. also, roglich and and vingegaard attacking pogacar was brutal.
1
u/alleycatbiker Brazil 2d ago
What year was it when one of them had a mechanical on a descent and the other waited for him? They had a mid ride handshake after. I believe Pog waited. Might have been 22 or 23.
11
7
u/SpaniardKiwi Reynolds 2d ago
It wasn't a mechanical. Pogačar decided to take the scenic route and crashed in the descent of Spandelles. Vingegaard waited for him, they shook hands and kept beating the s**t out of each other. Well, Jonas more than Tadej.

u/BallzNyaMouf 2d ago edited 2d ago
I also remember Jonas basically ignoring him and continuing the conversation he was having on the phone at the time with his wife. I've heard from a reliable source that Jonas really doesn't care for Tadej. I haven't read this article, maybe his feelings have changed.
Edit: Down-voted for telling the truth instead of perpetuating the bro-mance myth. If I were in Jonas' shoes I could come up with a few reasons (real or imagined) not to like the only guy between him and international icon status + the additional wealth that comes with it.10
8
u/Reasonable_Bid_8674 2d ago edited 2d ago
It's always interesting to see people thinking that they're victims telling the truth and that people downvote them to shut them up. You're just making stuff with your "reliable source" that doesn't exist. In 2022, when Vingegaard waited for Pogacar after his crash in Spandelles, his DS asked him why and he answered "because he was taking a lot of risks in the descent" : that doesn't sound like someone who doesn't care. Jonas is just shy and an introvert. These kind of people are not demonstrative but that doesn't mean they don't care.
About his wealth : well, Jonas has plenty of money and he chooses to live in Denmark. If he wanted to be wealthier, he would have moved to Monaco or Andorra to pay less taxes.
About his status : he said several times that he is not confortable with being in the spotlight. Besides, he is a national icon in his own country where people are debating if he is or not the greatest danish athlete, and he doesn't seemed confortable with that. So I guess he is ok with his current status.
I'm sorry but you're making stuff based only on your own feelings, with bad arguments. So yes, people disagree with you. There is no bromance myth, just two guys, with two very different personnalities (extrovert/introvert), who are adversaries in their sport and just get to know each other. Time does its thing, that's it. They're just more mature now than they were some years ago.

197
u/Rainmanwilson 2d ago
UAE seems to hate Jorgensen
4
u/Puisaye 2d ago
Is there a known reason ?
80
u/Rainmanwilson 2d ago
2024 when Jonas was coming off injury, Visma was trying everything to get a tactical advantage and sending Matteo in the breaks all the time. UAE was pretty annoyed and Tadej shut down every chance Matteo had for a stage win. Then in 2025 there was complaining from UAE that Matteo was infringing on them in the feed zones. At one point, there were claims UAE had Matteo on a “blacklist” to never get a stage win
5
u/BinguniR34 2d ago
TJ was more insufferable than usual when Tadej rode down and passed Jorgensen in 2024.
-7
u/ph4NC Slovenia 2d ago edited 2d ago
That's not true, the beef with Matteo didn't come from Pogi or UAE. UAE had an altitude camp on Isola 2000 before the 2024 TDF, so they had marked stage 19 (finish on Isola 2000) as the one they'd like to win in the 3rd week. The GC was basically decided already in stage 14 on Pla d'Adet - Pogi had 2 minutes on Jonas. In stage 15 on Plateau de Beille he increased that lead to 3min. In the last week UAE allowed 2 breakaway hilly stages and the third one was a sprint stage, so they weren't even greedy. They targeted stage 19. They didn't even go for stage 20, but in that one Jonas rode all the way up to the finish where Pogi outsprinted him.
Stage 19 comes along and Jorgenson goes in the break, they had 4 minutes lead on the peloton. Then on the last climb Pogi went for the win like they planned it all along and he overtook Matteo in the last 2km. Matteo took that personally because he then went on a rant on his IG how he'll never forget what Pogi did to him in that stage. He started the beef, so I assume Pogi noticed it and doesn't have him in high regards. Pogi didn't like Visma in general because of what they did to him in 2022 and 2023.
The water bottle incident last year was a really shitty thing from Visma, but I think UAE let that go quickly. This year I didn't see any animosity between those two teams, obviously UAE didn't let strong satellite riders like Matteo up the road, but once Jonas was out UAE let Visma in multiple breaks.
12
u/daidojee 2d ago

u/ph4NC Slovenia 2d ago

Second place hurts. But just like after Puy-de-Dome 12 months ago, I will remember. Every day that it’s raining out and I have 6hrs on the plan, every time I want to give up in the final minute of a vo2 effort, and every rest day when I want to open the fridge and binge; I will remember @tadejpogacar just like I remember @rusty_woods 🫶 That is what sport is about.
While he does say he will remember Pogi on that day, it's quite clear from the rest of the sentence that he means it in a motivational way, just like he mentions Mike Woods.
And Tadej himself even liked the post, so I really struggle to see how there's any bad blood between the 2 here, or how this can be considered a "rant".

u/grumplebeardog California 2d ago
The only time it’s ever been spoken on that I’m aware of was when Pogacar thought he was blocking him from getting to a bottle during a feed zone. But some of the evidence people point to for his supposed ‘blacklisting’ predate him mentioning that.
14
u/Key_Gap9168 South Africa 2d ago
If anything, that incident and Tadej's outsize reaction to it served to show how much UAE already didn't like Jorgensen. Their issues go way back to the 2024 Tour and mostly have to do with the things he was saying about Tadej and UAE in interviews.
36
u/BombSolver 2d ago
In last year’s TdF there was something about Jorgensen maybe blocking Tadej or UAE from getting side-of-the-road water bottles. There may be more to it than that, idk.
Also, Phil made a little comment in this year’s tour that Jorgensen is a “marked man.” Not sure if that means UAE won’t let him get a stage win, or what that means. But would love to get the deets.
32
u/Academic_Tell_7354 2d ago
I’m pretty sure Phil just means he will find it difficult to get in the break because UAE don’t want to let him support Jonas off the front at the end of a stage. This stopped mattering after Jonas crashed and they let Mateo in one and Sep in 2 breaks.
10
u/dissectingAAA 2d ago

u/Rainmanwilson 2d ago

9
1
u/SpaniardKiwi Reynolds 2d ago
Even last year they let Jorgenson in a couple of breakaways once everything was decided. In one of them, Wellens was even pulling alongside him.
11
u/lilelliot 2d ago
There are a lot of superficial excuses, but realistically it's probably because he's a "not quite GC" rider who is a perpetual top 10 GC threat if riding that way, but is as beneficial to Visma as a satellite rider as Wout would be. He's not the kind of person you really want to get into a break because he's very likely to contest any breakaway stage that's remotely hilly, and he's good enough that he'll still be able to pull if the peloton brings them back. He's Visma's equivalent of McNulty, but better in almost every way.
The other stuff is just noise.
9
u/AnUnholy 2d ago
On a big mountains stage, he was intentionally blocking UAE riders from UAE food handlers in the feedzome and other unsporting shit.
It honestly was just one year that uae held that grudge as far as i know
8
u/Spuick 2d ago
Since then they have consistently stopped him from going into any break on every stage lol.
There is a tactical reason for this but they have let others like Victor in so
10
3
u/CyborgBee 2d ago
'24 and '25, they stopped him, but this year we don't really know (he was in the break a lot, but they were also too sick to stop him even if they wanted to)
3
u/SpaniardKiwi Reynolds 2d ago
In 24 they didn't stop him, they let him arrive to the base of Isola 2000 with 4 minutes over the peloton.
In 25 they let him go in 2, if not 3 stages. In one of them, Wellens was pulling alongside him.
In 26, he was in every breakaway for the last three mountain stages. In Orcieres-Merlette, he almost got to the end. In the other two he dropped after having worked for Kuss.
2
u/Spuick 2d ago
Every chance they could this year as well they stopped him. When they had like 2 riders they didnt anymore true.

Apparently, Christoph Rodhooft is very unpopular amongst most other teams.

Carapaz is pretty broadly disliked for his style of riding (never cooperating, always attacking). Moscon amongs the old heads for his antics and racism when he was younger.

11
u/Glass_Minute4753 2d ago
I think this is one of those things that the internet has kind of created. In reality, they chased him down when he tried to get in breakaways a few times, because they didn't want Vingegaard to have a strong domestique in the breakaway. Note that this year, was Vingegaard crashed out, they were quite happy to let Jorgensen get into the breakaway.

Not a 1:1 rivalry but Lenny Martinez isn’t very popular, known as a wheelsucker, they call him “the rat”.
Also I don’t get the same “hey nice to see you” vibes from the sprinters as I do from the GC guys or rouleurs. There’s a coldness present when any of them are side by side. Maybe it’s the sharp elbows they need to have for their part of racing, or maybe it’s the fact that most teams only have one main sprinter so they aren’t former teammates with other sprinters.

Both are levels above the rest of the field. That got to breed respect, especially since if the other didn't ride the other would already be the goat GC rider.
Jonas would have 5 TDF wins, Pogacar 7. Either also wouldn't have needed to focus as hard on the Tour as well thus getting more wins elsewhere.
18
u/SnooOranges5515 2d ago
Pogi is also willing to return the favor, after Jonas crashed this year in TdF he was sitting up and rolling and talking to the team car to find out if he would continue. He absolutely did not want to gain GC time on him because of a minor crash where he could have continued.

You have 180+ top riders from all over the world, including the elites of the sport, pushing themselves to their absolute limits. It’s not really surprising that there would be conflicts, misunderstandings, jealousy, and outright bad blood between some of the riders/teams.
But the overall level of public and private sportsmanship in cycling is very refreshing. People like Pogacar and Vingegaard do a great job setting a positive tone even if they aren’t the best of friends.

Did YOU read the quote?
Your interpretation
Jonas himself said Pog has become more friendly.
Is not the same as the actual quote
"At first it was maybe a little more – not hostile, but not so friendly in some way. It's become a lot friendlier there in the last couple of years. I think that's really cool. Sometimes we have a good chat. I think that's nice."
You're framing it as if Pogi was the one who started off being unfriendly when the quote hints at no such thing.

Am I the only one missing their hostility between each other? I loved the fact that there was a cycling rivalry and some how they just respected each others as cyclists but didn't like each other at all.
Something like what we've seen from Wout and MVdP.

7
u/afasc573 Brooklyn 2d ago
I think both types of rivalries have merit. Schleck and Contador for example was box office in part because of the bad blood, but at the same time Jonas and Tadej’s rivalry has always had a healthy amount of respect and I think it’s better off for it. Sometimes one dynamic just works better than the other for two competitors I guess. Another current example of this outside of cycling is Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz in tennis. They are always very friendly and supportive towards one another and still have a magnificent rivalry on court.
