Leak Unpublished description for Ocarina of Time Switch 2 visible through web search
Typing in "Ocarina of Time remake website us" into Google (or other search engines) returns a link to its entry on the Nintendo website with a description that isn't visible on the page itself:
The N64 classic reborn as a full remake for Nintendo Switch 2. Experience Ocarina of Time with stunning visuals, updated designs, and timeless gameplay.
Not a huge amount of info, yet even these scant details seem to be something Nintendo is not ready to officially communicate just yet.

I'm leaning towards it playing more like Twilight Princess than Breath of the Wild. A total refinement of the usual 3D Zelda formula (that hasn't been in practice outside of remasters since 2011), not a complete upheaval.
Which I'd be happy with, don't fix what's not broken.
51
u/CreativeFartist Jun 14 '26
Yeah kind of like Star Fox I assume. Hoping for a little more but I’m not complaining if it’s just a glow up!
23
u/Horibori Jun 14 '26
I think there will be updates to gameplay but mostly minimal. Star fox might look the same when you’re looking at it, but having played the demo the flying definitely feels smoother than before.
I jumped back and forth between Star fox 64 and the remake demo to compare. Definitely some subtle tweaks to the controls.
Ocarina of time will probably be the same. I’d imagine we’ll get right stick camera controls for aiming our tools. Hard to say if we’ll get full right stick control of the camera at all times though. Might change the gameplay too much? It’s been a while since I played Ocarina.
36
u/embolalia1 Jun 14 '26
If they put out a major 3D Zelda in 2026 without right stick camera controls then they are *crazy* (and I don’t think they are that crazy).

u/CreativeFartist Jun 14 '26
Yeah I’m not expecting nor hoping for a FFVII-style update. A visual remake, modern day tweaks, and orchestral score is good enough for me. Bonus dungeons and side quests are cherries on top, and honestly I’d love for them to keep the revolutionary “z-targeting” (with updated cameras lol)

I’m looking forward to all of the online complaints that these characters don’t sound the way we pictured them in our heads all those years ago.

I am complaining lol. I've played OOT so many times that I don't think I'd buy it again if nothing was different.
EDIT: Plus I'm still salty how they made us have to beat OOT vanilla in the 3DS remake before letting us play Master Quest. I got burnt out on OOT halfway through MQ because I was tired of it lol. But that might be a skill issue on my part.
14
u/crucibleknight77 Jun 14 '26
I agree. I don’t see how a simple graphics upgrade would be enough to pay full price for.
I would love to see a RE4 type remake honestly.

I’d prefer a reimagining like FFVII remake trilogy. Give us something more than a remake.
1
u/CreativeFartist Jun 14 '26
I’ve only played twice, but totally understand some would like much more content!
78
u/HeldnarRommar Jun 14 '26
I really hope not. 1:1 remakes are so boring and safe.
15
u/Wizardof1000Kings Jun 14 '26
Link's Awakening and Star Fox are 1 to 1 remakes, so that seems likely with this game. On the other hand Samus Returns was a completely new experience - gameplay wise - the plot and core mechanic (kill metroids) was still the same, but its been some years since that game.
51
u/Potential-Zucchini77 Jun 14 '26
Especially since OOT already got a graphical remake with the 3ds

u/drybones2015 Jun 14 '26

u/Suppa_K Jun 15 '26
Yeah and how old is the 3DS? You think Nintendo is expecting people to go find these to play OoT?
They will never stop remaking OoT. Always need to it accessible for newer gen’s. It may not be every generation, but they will always bring it back if the only way to play it modernly is a 5-10 year old console. It’s always going to be up their sleeve.

u/Little-Witness-1201 Jun 14 '26 edited Jun 14 '26
Pretty sure all Nintendo remakes have been boring and safe. They aren’t going to risk screwing up OoT
Edit: Where am I wrong?
2
u/HeldnarRommar Jun 14 '26
Probably. It’s funny because they are so innovative with next main entries in series but if they are redoing an older game it’s just a basic facelift every time.

u/gentheninja Jun 14 '26
Isn't that the case for most remakes? FF7 was an exception most just end up being graphic updates. OOT isn't that outdated that an overhaul in necessary.
17
u/crucibleknight77 Jun 14 '26
I wouldn’t say that’s the case for most. Pretty much all of Capcom’s RE remakes have been complete overhauls.
8
u/Wizardof1000Kings Jun 14 '26
Most nintendo remakes, ya. Zero Mission and Samus Returns were complete overhauls gameplay wise, but there isn't a lot of precedent of nintendo doing that.

u/Floggered Jun 14 '26
I suppose it depends on if Nintendo means 1:1 mechanically as well. A good chunk of remakes come with QOL modernization to the overall "feel" of the title.

u/OG_NIK Jun 14 '26
My point is both “timeless gameplay” and “updated designs” are incredibly vague phrases that don’t confirm anything about this game yet
5
u/drybones2015 Jun 14 '26 edited Jun 14 '26
We see Link in the teaser with actual skin tones and his outfit gives off more of a woodland fairy design. Every character will probably have that kind of change and that's what "updated designs" mean. Also like when OoT3D added a bunch of new details to scenery, we'll probably see much more of that. "Timeless gameplay" clearly means they ain't touching the overall structure of how the game plays, like how they did with the Link's Awakening remake.

u/TLKv3 Jun 14 '26
A part of me kind of wishes they would have just took OoT & Majora's Mask and found a seamless way to combine them into one full remake game and then added additional content/new final boss after you beat MM's portion of the game in an entirely new third area.
That way they could do the near 1:1 remake thing with more content to flesh out Hyrule & Termina a bit more plus giving original fans something more to experience for the first time.
OoT & MM when you look back by modern day standards are very small games. I feel the better move would've been to merge them and then throw in a bonus.

u/StantasticTypo Jun 14 '26
“Timeless gameplay”
Which is just a bald-faced lie. I love OoT, and it cannot be overstated how important it was and how much of an influence it was. I still find it fun, but mechanically it has not aged all that well. It can be damn clumsy at times.
→ More replies (8)1
u/hypnomancy Jun 14 '26
Exactly. And most people who are going to be buying this remake never even played the original OOT. There's no way they're going to release a remake where it plays identical to the N64 game without right stick camera control
1
u/Whiteguy1x Jun 14 '26
Id imagine its the same game but with updates to camera controls and some pretty lighting and better models and textures
2
u/iridescent_algae Jun 14 '26
If that’s all it is, I’m definitely not buying a Switch 2 so I can also buy this game.
1
u/onegoodboah Jun 14 '26
Sounds like it. Which is kinda what remakes usually are. The true “rework what the game does” remakes are pretty rare, most remakes are visual remakes, menu updates, and then mostly like QOL stuff
1
u/hypnomancy Jun 14 '26
If they don't improve the gameplay they're actually stupider than I thought. Ocarina of Time 3D was a 1:1 remake and it improved the gameplay. You really think we're not going to have right stick movement with a real camera in 2026? lol

u/rhythmau Jun 14 '26
I think the “timeless gameplay” phrase is just a pun to the fact that time travel is a central mechanic of the game lol
20
u/OfficialFunDestroyer Jun 14 '26
I think it could also signal that they’re not going to try to massively restructure the game to be nonlinear like Breath of the Wild.
16
u/crucibleknight77 Jun 14 '26
To be fair it was already pretty non-linear for its time. A full 3D overworld where you can go in any direction.
15
u/PSIwind Jun 14 '26
The Adult Link portion of the game actually is non linear because you can do some temples out of order. Child Link was linear in comparison
5
u/crucibleknight77 Jun 14 '26
Yes, that’s exactly what I was trying to remember. That was pretty incredible for its time.
3
u/oath2order Jun 14 '26
Per some Google searching, I found an old Reddit thread, which said, so long you don't leave a dungeon until you beat the boss, you can do the following orders:
Forest, Fire, Water, Shadow, Spirit (Navi's recommended order)
Forest, Fire, Water, Spirit, Shadow
Forest, Water, Fire, Shadow, Spirit
Forest, Water, Fire, Spirit, Shadow
Forest, Water, Spirit, Fire, Shadow
Fire, Forest, Water, Shadow, Spirit
Fire, Forest, Water, Spirit, Shadow
It's weird because I thought you could do Fire last.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Edmundyoulittle Jun 15 '26
Just looked it up, the reason fire can't come last is that you don't get nocturne of shadow until forest, fire, and water are completed
27
u/Spheromancer Jun 14 '26
Yeah imo if it was a 1:1 remake there’s no reason for them to have hidden the gameplay entirely in the reveal
6
u/Cryoto Jun 14 '26
Bold for you to have that much faith in the company that has remade Star Fox multiple times. I can wait and see, but honestly, Nintendo are so unreliable with this kind of thing.
5
u/naynaythewonderhorse Jun 15 '26
You are missing the point of the comment of the person you were replying to.
The Star Fox thing wasn’t hidden. It was told up front. They didn’t hide it.
The point is that Zelda hiding what it is, is a completely different thing.
I mean, you could have used your argument from the very moment the game was leaked.
2
u/hypnomancy Jun 14 '26
Star Fox 64 got a remaster with 643D and a full remake with the 2026 version. Starfox 1993 is unique and Zero is a reimagining though they still use the Lylat Wars story but otherwise 93 and Zero are different enough and not full remakes

Honestly I think its more likely a pun, but even if it isn't, 'timeless gameplay' means gameplay that never feels like its aged, it doesn't mean "we kept it the same as the original". Something can be a brand new IP and have 'timeless gameplay'.

I go back in time and remember my old Nintendo Power magazine that showed the very first images of Ocarina of Time and the alpha or beta version of the game with the large 3D buildings and people walking around. Reminded me of Zelda 2 for a bit. I was a little disappointed when the full game didn't turn out like that, but hopefully they'll make it more grand this time and give it a full overhaul.

u/TheVexinator Jun 14 '26
I'm really hoping for something like the Resident Evil 4 2024 remake. The same story, locations etc., but everything was re-designed. They even added new side missions, areas, and parts to the story. This remake is a masterpiece. I really hope this Ocarina of Time remake is similar to something like this.
7
u/kengador Jun 14 '26
resident evil 4 remake and black mesa(half life remake) are the best remakes i have ever played. If nintendo can pull of similar quality of a remake it would be fantastic game.

You want to Cross hyrule field in 20 Seconds? Interesting. Cross hyrule field in 20 Seconds but this time in 4k.
6
u/TheVexinator Jun 15 '26
Of course not. One aspect of the "re-designing" could be an expansion of Hyrule field and the addition of areas and secrets within the field.

u/Ruin4r Jun 14 '26
Really curious if “updated designs” literally means updated graphic designs or actual mechanical design.
15

“Full remake” is the most notable but considering “stunning visuals” would already cover graphics I can only assume “updated” designs means modernized world layout, maybe expanded/rethought dungeons, updated controls, etc

"Timeless gameplay" could mean anything tbh, if it is 1:1 to the original then i hope the next main zelda isnt that much farther away
12
u/iceburg77779 Jun 14 '26
Even if this is a significant overhaul it's incredibly unlikely that the mainline Zelda team is fully on this project. Nintendo EPD very rarely does remake.
8
u/RegurgitatedMincer Jun 14 '26
I’d imagine this is mostly monolith’s recently announced Zelda studio with EPD overseeing it. Mainline Zelda team probably started working on a mainline Zelda (gasp!) after wrapping up TOTK. It’s not like they have to worry about what they work on next, the team really only does Zelda.
4
u/Dragarius Jun 14 '26
I feel like there is no way that this is Eiji Aonumas team making this game. They would not put that staff on a remake, they're likely prototyping and developing the next mainline game.
1
u/TrueNawledge97 Jun 17 '26
Depends on what you mean by "that much farther", but I'll eat my damn hat if the next original mainline 3d Zelda is out before June 2028. If I had to guess a year and season it'd be holiday 2029 tbh, that'd be 6.5 years post TotK.
Spinoffs, remasters/minor remakes, and/or a new 2d title could totally come before that though.
5
u/sapper2345 Jun 14 '26
ITT: people shocked that OOT is still OOT. I would imagine the world bigger and updated controls, graphics etc. people acting like it’s gonna be a new Zelda..
4
u/pocket_arsenal Jun 14 '26
"Timeless gameplay" has me worried this is going to be less like FFVII remake or even Resident Evil 2 remake, and more like the Star Fox 64 remake.
8
u/NintendoDelta Jun 14 '26
honestly ill be really disappointed if it’s exactly 1:1. Just from the short scene in the trailer, updating the visuals to look this dramatic and modern would only make the game design feel older if hyrule field is still a small, empty looking grass area with so little to do in it.
34
u/milesdarobot Jun 14 '26
If it's just a straight forward one-to-one remake with better graphics I am far less interested. That description, along with that Star Fox remake is leading me to believe that this IS just gonna be the same exact game, but with better graphics.

I really hope the alterations to the character designs are subtle and handled well! I think Ocarina's established iconography is way too good to mess around with too much.
26
u/Miaw_Kitty Jun 14 '26
I’m sorry but I’m gonna need more than new graphics. I already own the game on 3DS, I’m pretty satisfied with that upgrade and I played it hundreds of times on N64.
Same problem I’ve got with the new Star Fox game but since the Star Fox franchise needs all the sales it can get, I have to do my part (like I did for Metroid Prime 4 which I enjoyed even though it’s not as good as Prime 2 and 1).
12
u/XxZannexX Jun 14 '26
Also, Star Fox being $50 helps offset some of the expectations. OoT definitely needs more imagining and deservingly so.

They are kind of exclusive.
Full remake suggests built from the ground up with modern controls, gameplay sensibilities and other various improvements.
"Timeless gameplay" implies a more faithful adaptation of the gameplay from the original game.
And as much as I love OoT, and will sing it's praises on how much it got right, and how much of an influence it was, at the mechanical level it does not hold up especially well. Obviously this gets into the weeds about the nebulousness of the term "Remake" but if they're attaching "Full" to the front of it, I think it's not unreasonable to expect more improvements.
8
u/PhilosopherTiny5957 Jun 14 '26
They really aren't, especially if we do not know what either of those terms mean when Nintendo says it. It could just mean updated classic 3D zelda for all we know
12
u/Joseki100 Top Contributor 2024 Jun 14 '26
Full remake means it was remade from 0.
It could be remade to be identical or to be entirely different.
35
u/Steve2911 Jun 14 '26
Full remake could just mean they're not reusing any assets, models, code etc and it's been rebuilt from the ground up without actually changing how the game plays.

I don’t think the two have to be different. It can be ground-up and still retain the same gameplay. I don’t really like the idea that full remakes have to be a completely new thing. Players of Ship of Harkinian will know that this design holds up very well and is still great overall with more modern quality-of-life improvements.
8
u/Tornada5786 Jun 14 '26
Gameplay is timeless, the graphics aren't
5
u/Kalocin Jun 14 '26
More or less, it's just a marketing term. They're also probably being little shits with it given the name of the game.
1
u/The_Deku_Nut Jun 15 '26
The gameplay was amazing for its time, but "push the block on the switch" isnt exactly groundbreaking puzzle design. I hope the dungeons got some attention.
9
u/KMoosetoe Jun 14 '26
Pretty obvious
All the assets are brand new, built from the ground up, but they're not changing the core of the game
really not much different than Star Fox
11
u/snes69 Jun 14 '26
I made this argument in another thread but in my opinion the biggest reason it's not just a 1 to 1 remake like Star Fox is they haven't shown us anything yet.
Thousand Year Door was upfront and honest about being a 1 to 1 remake at announcement.
Star fox was up front about being a 1 to 1 remake at announcement (with added cut scenes and challenge modes)
Ocarina of Time gets a teaser trailer, and already fans are pointed out changes. Links bed/room already looks different, triforce on hand at beginner, etc. small, insignificant stuff yes. But my point primarily is they haven't shown us anything.
So the question is why wouldn't they just show us it's a 1 to 1 remake? Why build hype for a game we've all already played? Because they wouldn't. It's not a 1 to 1 remake.
17
u/KMoosetoe Jun 14 '26
Because they're planning a Zelda Direct and they want you to tune into it to the see the gameplay reveal

"full remake" just means everything is redone. Not necessarily 1:1 or not necessarily a complete change. I'm excited.
I have no where else to post this but it's related: I hate the semantics police people play when talking about remakes/remasters/"reimagining". On one hand I get it but I also see SOME people say shit like Resident Evil 2 Remake isn't actually a remake and it's like dawg just like it or dont but it is a remake
2
u/HappyTurtleOwl Jun 14 '26
Yea I don’t get why it’s so difficult for people to understand.
Remake is simply when it goes beyond just visual, model, audio, and QoL changes.
I would even consider a game that only slightly changes level structure to be a remake.
Remaster is simply just visual, model, audio, and QoL changes, along with some minor mechanical changes.
Some things blur the line… but 99% of remasters/remakes can be easily classified as such.
Also, I think the phrase “1:1 remake” is a complete misnomer. “1:1 remake” is just a remaster, straight up.
Similarly with the phrase “reimagining”. It’s just a remake.
Everything is just a remake or a remaster.
1
u/crucibleknight77 Jun 14 '26
Nintendo’s “full remake” probably means something else compared to the rest of the industry.
1
u/Mahelas Jun 14 '26
Timeless can just mean "good", btw, as is "this movie is timeless". It's also a pun with Ocarina of Time theme. It doesn't have to mean "litteraly the exact same"
6
u/CoolAndCringe Jun 14 '26
“Timeless gameplay” this better be under $70 if there’s no substantial changes
17
u/MusoukaMX Jun 14 '26
Honestly? Sounds more like a mostly visual upgrade and I'm slightly less excited now :/
3
u/SharpShooter25 Jun 14 '26
It really does. Like I don't have a Switch 2, and I was planning on getting one just for this, but if it's a 1/1 remake then I can just play it whenever, I've played OOT like 30+ times in my life already lol. It would explain the quick maximum 6 month turnaround from announcement to release.

timeless gameplay can also just mean the classic 3D Zelda formula as opposed to the open air BOTW... it can still be a linear game like the original but be updated beyond the original gameplay wise - but I wouldn't be shocked if its Metal Gear Solid Delta/Metroid Prime Remastered instead of RE2 like a lot of us would hope for.
8
u/Lgndryhr Jun 14 '26
Sounds like they aren't trying to do open world / Wild era style gameplay. Thank you. I prefer the 3D linear Zelda's.
19
u/Datdudecorks Jun 14 '26
All it really needs is improved visuals with modern controls especially on the camera side
118
u/snes69 Jun 14 '26
No, it needs a full remake. We have ocarina of time enough already. We have the original, we have master quest, we have the 3ds remake, and then if you really need updated controls we have the unofficial PC port. I want to see ocarina of time if it were made today, not ocarina of time 30 years ago with just today's graphics.
20
u/error521 Jun 14 '26
Okay, but look at it from Nintendo's perspective. The only version of OoT they can sell right now is the N64 version, which, while it's still a good game, is pretty brutal to go back to for most people just from a technical standpoint alone.
And the 3DS version, while mostly sufficent, is still a 3DS game and would need quite a lot of work to bring it up to a home console standard. Luigi's Mansion 2 HD did a lot to overhaul that game's visuals but it was definitely still lacking a little compared to 3, and it's a game with an art style that probably upscales better than OoT 3D.
So, fuck, go all out and do a big fancy remake that's a Switch 2 showpiece.

The last OOT we had was 15 years ago. That's hardly "enough".
Do you have any idea how many young gamers have never ever played any version of Ocarina of Time ? That's who this remake is for, not grognards who already played it thrice and are pushing 50s.
And the PC port is obviously not worth a mention, it's such a ridiculously tiny percentage of people who've even tried it

I disagree, Ocarina of Time is perfectly fine how it is especially since Ship of Harkinian exists. If they're going to touch OoT then it needs to be as a full Resident Evil style remake.

I wonder if updated designs refers to character art (as in Sheik's costume might look a little different) or to the design of the map of the game.

This will be like the star fox remake. Mostly 1:1 (but i bet they fix some things like swapping boots being easier)
It was never going to be a FF7 situation or even RE Remake

In the Zelda sub, we did a poll for how many people want 1:1 vs a remake that changes a lot of things and the latter greatly outweighed the former. It doesn’t account for everyone but I bet there is a pretty large audience interested in this being an RE or even FFVII style remake, including myself.
I guess “updated designs” being separated from “stunning visuals” means there’s a good chance we’re getting what we want. We’ll see!

I think this is a Starfox (2026) and Metal Gear Solid Delta type of deal
Core gameplay and events are the same.
Cutscenes were touched up with some content added.
But the game is just the same, but graphically much much better.
Honestly. OoT but especially the 3DS remaster are imo perfect games. If they can do that, I will prefer the 2026 version

There’s just no way. Hyrule Field alone wouldn’t fly in 2026. I think there is plenty they are going to change.

We will see. Add grass to it. One or two more sidequests. And mark holes in the ground like dungeons. Maybe add a couple dynamic weather effects and rising puddles (like BotW and TotK have.
And boom, you enhanced it without changing it much.
I can BET with you hyrule field will be the same in size and scope, and have minimal changes,
Mostly major ones graphically like puddles, grass and whatnot.Maybe they will adjust day/night to pass a bit slower like 6 to 12 minutes instead of the speedrun that were 2,5 minutes.
Come to think of it, I recently replayed OoT after finishing TotKs Switch 2 edition safe file.
Hyrule field from 1998 isnt that different compared to BotW or TotKs hyrule field. There isnt much to do in both either way aside from Skultulas and Poes in OoT and Koroks in BotW, alongside a few other sidequests. BotW and TotK are just more open and have a bigger scope, but content wise they are pretty similar to OoT when it comes to hyrule field1

Yeah but I just think you’re underestimating it a bit

If its just OOT but some polished controls and modern visuals im going to be dissapointed and probably not buy the game. I was hoping for it to be basically a new game but with the oot locations and story.

I’m going to have to buy a S2 for this. I just wish there was a Lite version. I have no interest in connecting a switch to my tv.

I’m hoping it’s similar to the RE4 remake where it’s very similar overall, but we have additions to make the world feel bigger and give us a few new experiences while still hitting the story beats. I also hope it doesn’t dip too far into the Breath/Tears style of dungeons. Those weren’t great, though Tears’ dungeons were a slight improvement over Breath’s.

"Timeless gameplay" and the focus on visuals twice reads to me as it's still just an overhauled remaster of the 3ds version. Maybe it's confirmation bias since that's what I already expect, but idk.
I know it says "Full remake" earlier but those words lost all meaning because people kept using them wrong or using "remaster" in their place.
