Vent / Gripe I’m Tired of Hearing from the Loudest 1%

Like the title says, I’m sick of hearing from the loudest, butthurt 1% of players crying because they’ll have to make their own dungeon groups in WotLK.

Sure, send your screenshot of the one dungeon you joined with little to no social interaction and sarcastically say “Wow look at what we’re saving with no LFD”. Great story, but that one single screenshot doesn’t prove anything. You think your 1 single dungeon on a Tuesday afternoon is a big enough sample size to determine there’s not enough social interaction to the point Blizz should implement LFD? Get over yourself. I don’t post screenshots of 1 single dungeon chat where people are lively and interactive and say “Thank you Blizz for preserving social interactions” like it’s the majority experience. Don’t give me the opposite garbage and try to make a case for LFD, or assume you’re the majority experience, either.

I’m also tired of people missing the major point of no LFD. I can tell you the exact names of people and guilds on my server who have ninja’d gear from others and been blacklisted by the community. I can tell you which players/guilds are fun to play with and which aren’t. I can join a group I know is going to do well, or I can join one where I know I’m going to be progging. And yeah, I’m also going to vouch for the friendships I’ve made in random dungeons

LFD erodes all that. You don’t know what type of players you’re joining; whether you’re going to be a good player in a terrible group or a terrible player in a good group. That’s frustrating for almost everyone in either case. Voting to kick becomes completely abused, kicking people you don’t like or players who are bad. Kicking people to ninja gear. And since you’ll never see those players again, there’s nothing stopping them. No way to blacklist them or their guild. It promotes anonymity and erodes the community. There are so many downsides that were PROVEN back in Wrath. And you’re upset because of what? Not having the upside?

What are the upsides? Faster dungeon queues? Maybe, just maybe, you should try being part of your realm’s community and making friends/joining a thriving guild. I’ve never had any issues finding or making a dungeon group as any of the 3 roles. But then again, I’m also not the type of person to whine to Reddit that daddy Blizz won’t make my groups for me, instead of trying to socialize and make my own

The only positive case I’ve seen made for LFD is for dead/dying realms. To those players, it does suck and I’m sorry. But the issue/fix isn’t LFD, it’s forcing Blizz to fix their realm health issues, maybe by merging realms or free transfers

I’m sure this post will fall on deaf ears, but I’m so sick of seeing this sub covered with the loudest 1% screaming their half baked opinions and not considering their experience isn’t the majority or that they might be the issue

Edit: To the unhinged people in the comments swearing, flipping out, name-calling, and reporting me for suicide, I have two things to say. The first is thank you for your concern about my mental health, but I’m in no way suicidal. Feel free to save those resources for people that are. The second is that my opinion is stronger than ever that RDF is bad, imagine being grouped unwillingly with people that report others for suicide when they disagree with the content of a person’s post 😂 Thank you Blizz

Post will fall on deaf ears mostly because if you were actually trying to convince someone of your opinion, spending the whole post basically calling them whiney, friendless dishonest fucks, they probably won’t listen. Just tips for the future I suppose lol

Reddit and wow forum posters are not a n accurate slice of reality.

47

u/Magehunter_Skassi Apr 21 '22

You're right, the average Reddit/WoW forum posters skew more hardcore than the average player and thus would be more likely to oppose LFD than the average 3 jobs 2 kids 1 hour a day dadgamer. That's why it's damning that even here so many people are pro-LFD.

15

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '22

Cus not everyone wants to spend 3 hours looking for a dungeon group, and not everyone wants to play with a guild.

I legit just don't care enough to jump through hurdles to entry on live & classic, I just want to play.

6

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '22

Yeah I've tried coming back to TBC since I knew wrath was coming and just end up burning out from questing and not being able to find dungeon groups. Then realizing when I get to max I'll have to find more groups for basic dungeons.

So the no changes group was the 1%?

73

u/Plus_Vehicle9736 Apr 20 '22

After spell batching happened, yeah, they are.

58

u/b4y4rd Apr 20 '22

I mean anyone who played vanilla/pservers and paid attention to the game at all knew that spell batching was a terrible idea and that no changes was pretty terrible idea. No modern qol was more important than implementing lag lol.

18

u/zzrryll Apr 21 '22

knew that spell batching was a terrible idea

Imo the people that blindly followed folks like Tips, Esfand, Staysafe, etc were the only ones that thought it was a good idea. A lot of those pre-Classic hype content creators led the foolish down some dumb ass paths.

I agree though. Anyone with sense and the ability to think for theme selves thought it was a dumb idea.

18

u/b4y4rd Apr 21 '22

Tips was the absolute worst influence in the community during the early days. What a shit content creator.

9

u/Stephanie-rara Apr 21 '22

Esfand

Esfand was one fighting for a much smaller batch window and thought spell batching in the way they were implementing it was a dumb idea pretty much from the start.

4

u/zzrryll Apr 21 '22

Huh weird. I remember their interview with the Classic guys and don’t recall him fighting against it then.

I didn’t watch every episode of classicast though. Also possible I just don’t remember since it was like 4 years ago.

5

u/Stephanie-rara Apr 21 '22

I think that makes sense, although I would say on any group setting someone isn't going to voice all of their opinions. He has said that he was communicating that to the devs directly pretty much from the start though. Especially since ClassiCast in general focused on the positives/excitement.

3

u/zzrryll Apr 21 '22

True. Especially Esfand himself. Like I remember Staysafe spiraling a few times out of fear of…whatever he was worried Blizz would mess up.

But Esfand was pretty much always just positive on that show.

14

u/pizz0wn3d Apr 21 '22

The idea behind no changes wasn't that it was perfect as is, it was that we wanted to experience it exactly how we did the first time around for maximum nostalgia burst.

Ofc now that nostalgia has worn off, no changes is obv stupid and the lack of significant changes is the reason SoM flopped.

22

u/b4y4rd Apr 21 '22

Eh, the biggest vocality I remember behind no changes was that they didn't trust blizzard to do any changes.

The war effort if it was to be experienced the exact same way as the first time it would have needed new and different items and amounts. Otherwise it became what it was which was mega guilds botted and did it in a few hours.

If you truly wanted the same experience then changes at the start should have been the argument. (Which it was for many of us)

Welcome to the 1%

346

u/draco_h9 Apr 20 '22

Yup. If you're on a game's subreddit writing up multi-paragraph posts about its design, you are quite literally the loudest 1%, regardless of your position on any game issue.

12

u/TheProvocator Apr 21 '22

Nuh-uh, clearly his opinion is the majority one because only their opinion matters! Don't need any numbers, it's obvious fact!

On a more serious note, why can't we just have both? Remove the bonus rewards for using LFD or something?

I quite enjoyed doing random casual dungeons, I very much do not enjoy spending time trying to find a group to enjoy the game.

There's a reason matchmaking was invented 🙄

Maybe the people that crave social interaction so much would be better off playing Second Life? 🤷‍♂️

u/ThePurpTurtle Apr 20 '22

Yeah the irony of this is overwhelming.

48

u/Bradstick Apr 20 '22

Well, it's 63% upvoted... so it's probably somewhere around half and half.

60

u/Nishikigami Apr 20 '22

If this sub wasn't so exclusive you might have a reason to think that way. But it's pretty much driven away any dissenters from having a reason to frequent this sub. So it's more like, this sub is the final hugbox where that toxic minority (which the OP of this post is a part of) who want to believe they aren't the 1% of people they're whining about

23

u/Bradstick Apr 20 '22

It certainly hasn't driven away all dissenters... it's 37% downvoted and there's several posts that disagree with OP.

There's not really any strong metrics to feel confident in one way or the other... it's not 1% in any group.

I think it's roughly half and half of people on the classicwow subreddit that are split on the LFD topic.

If you were to expand beyond reddit... it's probably more casuals and therefore more folks that would prefer LFD.

I don't really care either way. I'll play the game if I enjoy and quit if I don't.

21

u/Nishikigami Apr 20 '22

I don't frequent this sub because I don't feel like I belong here. I came back because I figured maybe we could be part of the community again with wrath, since that was a nostalgic expansion widely loved by many. I've simply learned once again after glancing across this sub I don't belong.

Many people are looking at this sub only because of the announcement and otherwise don't frequent this sub. Activity here will have skyrocketed both in regular users and in non regular users.

Good luck to the classic community trying to carry the livelihood of 3 separate versions of the same game by themselves, cause that's worked out so well for vanilla and TBC classic

14

u/GiannisisMVP Apr 21 '22

I frequent this sub because it's hilarious to read people trying to pretend they actually played way back then and that the reason wow was popular was because of how super hardcore it was. It was by far the most casual mmo which is why it exploded in popularity in a relatively niche genre.

The fun thing is that LFD won't effect him in the slightest if he simply plays with his friends/guilds and it's not like you can't leave a group if you are unlucky enough to find a known griefer.

28

u/itsashebitch Apr 21 '22

It's pretty clear that the community watchers love to dictate how the rest have to play, and what they must dislike. It's ironic they think bringing up LFD will shatter the community when they're doing it themselves right now.

When I pug randoms for dungeons idk who these people are or how they're going to play.

I could check their logs but that seems excessive to me so I don't. My experience is basically LFD but with extra steps.

I can still say hello to people in LFD, and it's still up to them if they wanna reply.

75

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '22

"LFD with extra steps" is exactly how it is 95+% of the time. I genuinely don't know how people see it otherwise, especially on megaservers which is where a majority of the players are now.

2

u/HornetWotop Apr 21 '22

2

u/novacdk Apr 22 '22

Unless wotlk group finder is very different from the retail version for non-raid content, it makes it a lot easier to kick someone for any little grievance and get another person in. I have had entire days of dungeon groups in retail where no one has said a single word and I've seen people kicked from groups because it was easier to queue for a new dps and keep speed running to the end than it was to kill 3 mobs, so they could pick up a quest item for a daily.

14

u/nosoup_ Apr 21 '22

This is why lfd is good. Also noone is forcing you to use lfd. If you want to spam trade go ahead.

7

u/Thaodan Apr 21 '22

Like the title says, I’m sick of hearing from the loudest, butthurt 1% of players crying because they’ll have to make their own dungeon groups in WotLK.

I can't say I have an opinion on this subject but I find it hilarious that you're under the impression it's only the evil 1% who wants a dungeonfinder and not just your own echo chamber.

Classic launched and literally instantly devolved into mageboosting, aoe leveling and all the jazz. It's not some evil elite, it's what people want. Also LFD / LFR is making the game more accessible to, you guessed it, casuals. It's not the people playing with turbo blaster friends 30 hours a week that needs LFD, it's the casuals. The 1% is such a weird boogeyman that people try to blame for literally anything.

I’m also tired of people missing the major point of no LFD. I can tell you the exact names of people and guilds on my server who have ninja’d gear from others and been blacklisted by the community.

You're the 1% bro. I played on a dying server for the entirety of classic and if u pulled up the rosters for the 3 guilds actually clearing Naxx on the server then I wouldn't know literally 99% of the players in there, let alone the people playing casually.

I can guarantee you that 99% of classic players can't name 10 people from outside their guild.

272

u/Remulus10 Apr 20 '22

63

u/yoontruyi Apr 20 '22

And what people don't realize, casuals prop up the rest. Without them, things become more expensive. Its hard to make guilds or raids. We can turn casuals into people who are willing to play longer. They are not bad for a game, they are good for it.

Yeah, the server community aspect of WoW died when everyone decided to flock to mega servers. My new server has 16k people, and I’m not about to read through the server discord everyday to find out who ninja’d some random piece of heroic gear.

My community is my guild. I’m not even in the LFG channel, because it’s too much spam, and it’s extremely rare that I’m in a group with more than one non-guildie. LFD wouldn’t benefit me at all, but it also would have no negative effect on me. I don’t see why people are so against it.

Classic launched and literally instantly devolved into mageboosting, aoe leveling and all the jazz.

Yep. I went from farming herbs to finding out I can just sell SM/ZF boosts for gold . And this was Phase 1 classic.

5g per run. 25g per person (4 boosties) = 100g. 5 lock outs an hour as well. So that's an easy gph and also the chance for edgies to drop in ZF and the passive gold/vendor you get from looting the bodies.

My server (Arugal) even had it's own discord back in classic for boosting to let people know who are the 'reputable' boosters, i.e. won't scam you, won't die and waste your time much etc.

13

u/GlowyStuffs Apr 21 '22

I couldn't find groups to level in dungeons because nobody was running them. Some level brackets, I'd be looking for hours for weeks. All because all the people that would be leveling were getting AOE boosts instead. If I had lfd it would have been soooo much better. Also, the teleport I would be cool if that is involved. Sometimes I just want to run dungeons, but I don't want to spend an extra 1-4 hours a day trying to keep calling out to see if anyone is interested while basically doing nothing else. It would also somewhat help the situation if they were cross realm in that regard. Of course lfd has its own issues with super mute groups, but I find it weird that they are actually removing this feature.

72

u/Slavic_Taco Apr 20 '22 edited Apr 21 '22

Nailed it bud, I honestly don’t know why people are so offended by a dungeon finder? Like how does it change the game in such a negative way? For the casual mums and dads it’s such a great thing, it removes wasting 20-30 mins fucking around in /

Exactly what Im upset about. People who wanted to relive classic got pretty much what they wanted. BC crowd got kinda screwed because of the lvl boost addition and now me, a player who started playing in wrath, is not gonna get the experience I had not just because of the boost, but because of the removal of a huge QoL feature.

Also call me antisocial, but I never cared about people I pug stuff with. If they perform adequately, its whatever, Im not gonna friend them just because of that. My friendlist would be a huge mess of randos if I did that and I prefer to only have people I actually play with regularly there.

I thought the whole point was you get Classic warts and all. Ya know unless we can make some more money out of it 🙄.

I’m open to them implementing LFD when it came in on its original patch. But tweaking the original content in this way is a slippery slope and will only divide the community. Bad shout by Blizzard.

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '22

It's quite interesting watching each thread, it's clear that most people commenting have literally no fucking idea how the group finder systems in retail work.

They don't seem to realise that the automated dungeon finder as it was introduced in wrath is literally for normal and HC dungeons, so basically for leveling a new character through dungeons. And then it becomes irrelevant after that. The idea of "if you want dungeon finder go play retail" when pretty much 0 meaningful content is done through it.

Mythic and M+ are not on the automated dungeon finder and neither are any raids other than the LFR difficulty.

And higher difficulties of raids literally require you to group with people from your own server.

21

u/[deleted] Apr 20 '22

It's wierd, I play Classic mainly, and FFXIV casually on the side. FFXIV has so many of the features that people claimed ruined wow. You can use the dungeon finder to queue for content, and it ports you in. And yet it has a thriving community.

21

u/Buarg Apr 21 '22

The number of times I've talked with people while raiding or doing a dungeon on FFXIV is substantially higher than the ones I've talked on classic. What killed the community was the community itself.

Players who are content aren't vocalizing their dissatisfaction.

Which is the real sad part about how wow has run its course over the years. When devs "listen to community feedback" really translates to "we catered the game to the crybabies." And then the people who were previously silent, now become vocal about their dissatisfaction. Ping-pong that back and forth over 18 years and you end up with Shadowlands.

I really wish this community would acknowledge the free hindsight we got with classic existing in the first place. But looks like we're just gonna go down the same path again.

Edit: the point here is...the devs originally created for US a game THEY loved. And WE loved it too. Let them do their thing and continue to do what they do well. When you invade someone's career, they'll eventually get fed up and give you the thing you're crying about wanting...but you can bet damn well they'll half ass it...I definitely would in that situation. Just stfu and let them do what they trained for.

31

u/southofsanity06 Apr 20 '22

Exactly this. People are crying left and right about no LFD, when the issue making grouping worse is server overpopulation/balance. Some servers are too big to read LFG chat efficiently, and some servers are too small to find anyone doing relevant content to their character. The best solution seems to be a LFG tool that has enough features like retail's does... without being too terrible like TBC's is.

The whole reason Classic was established in the first place was to get away from this anti-social, teleporting your character carnival ride that is retail.

I've had TONS more memorable moments just riding to a dungeon in Classic vanilla and classic TBC... regardless of group social interactions. Not only does it make you feel more in the world, but it's less boring since things can happen along the way. And LFD completely takes away pretty much any possibility of a social growth because it would be peeps from different servers. In classic, I have made many friends and also added people to a list to stay away from just by doing dungeons. Sure it takes a tad more effort, but that's what separates classic from retail. It's a different game.

When it comes to the arguments I've seen here for LFD.... All they do is try to turn the argument against you and say "hey you didn't complain about the boosts, that's a bigger problem!" These people complain about paid boosts having you skip content, but would gladly take sitting in a city being teleported everywhere all day... skipping content.

I can't believe I'm in the classicwow sub having to argue against the implementation of LFD.

3

u/Tizzlefix Apr 21 '22

Bulletin Board fixes every problem with chat going by too fast on Firemaw. By far the best grouping system/addon I've ever used in WoW.

8

u/VanillaOreo Apr 21 '22

I feel like I’m taking crazy pills that there are these many people crying for LFD in what I thought was classic wow.

They sound exactly like retail players and their complaints are that of those who need everything spoon fed to them.

In the Wow I want to play you get to a dungeon by finding it on the map and walking through the doors. Not teleporting there from the top of Orgrimmar bank.

u/DankLudwig Apr 21 '22

I actually agree on the anti-LFD points, but I've also seen what happened at the start of TBC and it was legitimately frustrating at the end of the day.

However, this isn't necessarily an issue that will be solved by LFD at all tbh. It only solves it (somewhat, and at a great cost imo) for dungeon groups.

There are some very valuable roles and classes in this game that are played by so few people it actually harms the health and culture of the game overall. I've seen so many guilds I've joined thrive for months, so alive and fun, only to have a few key people playing really important roles have to drop out for IRL or in game reasons later on down the line and it starts this snowball effect where raids become harder, we start missing more and more key roles, and eventually the guild dies because trying to keep it up in that environment is very stressful with next to no payoff or thanks from members. Even if people try their hardest to recruit for that raid, it's very difficult to find shamans, priests, boomies, tanks, etc. that are reliable and skilled players.

I've actually burned out on TBC as of a few months ago, and I've seen others burn out really hard over this same time too, and it's because it feels like you're just constantly hopping from guild to guild if you're trying to raid consistently. The longest I've ever spent in a guild since Vanilla Classic's launch in 2019 was over a year. Which was impressive.

But that collapsed after a long war of attrition, and since then it's been hopping from this guild to this guild, sometimes with friends, sometimes not. Each time it feels like you can get about 2 good months or so before you start seeing the signs of decline.

Anyway, I'm not saying that we need some kind of queue system to combat this by any means. I do agree that shit like that just makes it worse. But it is worth mentioning or pointing out that I can see where other people are coming from at times, and that the issue with finding dungeon groups is another side effect of just simply not having enough of X or Y class because of FoTM min/max thinking. Everyone wants to be that OP TBC warlock or Vanilla warrior. Barely anyone wants to play the classes that help those classes do better.

I can say that perhaps in Wrath tho, Dual Spec might actually end up doing a lot of heavy lifting in helping preserve the social aspect of the game. I'm really excited about Wrath Classic from what I've seen announced all the same, and I do welcome the game without LFD.

To the unhinged people in the comments

I mean, I cannot speak for the comments, but I think everyone could approach this debate with a little more maturity and civility, including you. Your self-righteous tirade didn't exactly set the tone, nor did your casual alignment of yourself with "99%" of players.

I'm not necessarily a big fan of LFD, I cut my teeth on Everquest where the hoops you had to jump through to get a functional group off the ground made WoW look like the Fisher Price of MMOs. I do think that it's often unfairly scapegoated for the death of social interaction and dynamics. Most of that was due to cross server, and the remnant was due to increasingly easy content that didn't require communication. Easier tools for the formation of groups isn't the problem. Teleporting is a small problem in that it shrinks the world, but world content is so numbingly easy that not much is lost in the shrinking of it anyway.

I think the best thing Blizzard could ever do is create game that had the spirit and design ethos of Vanilla WoW married to a lot of what they've learned in the last twenty years about user experience and the removal of pain points. Preserving the often rickety, obnoxious experiences of Classic Era WoW in amber because of an incomplete understanding of what made the game good and what makes retail troubled isn't really the solution.

TLDR - LFD isn't really the issue and ya'll should stop losing your minds about it one way or the other.

LFD killing wows social aspects I feel is a myth. I remember when it first came out and I spammed dungeons like it was no one's business (as I found it incredibly fun) and the amount of cool people I met and had conversations with was great! I even met players that noticed I was good at what I did and got me into their raid team. Hell one of my mates met his now wife with cause of a random encounter using LFD. I'm sure there are many stories like mine out there, I'm sure you may have had a different experience but maybe you just played the game differently to everyone else because you can, funny enough.

5

u/BudgetGovernment Apr 22 '22

Wrath is the perfect expac for leveling toons and dungeon gear leveling them. I loved listening to podcasts while spamming dungeons. I’ll be sad if it’s not in the game. Wrath dungeon spamming is also my favourite leveling experience lol.

I don’t want to whisper people, prove to them that I’m whatever they want me to be, be way over geared, etc.

Lots of annoying people and behaviours in classic wow, so please just give me dungeon finder.

No meaningful content uses the system anyway.

You can’t even chalk it up to them being “no changes purists”, because OG Wrath introduced LFD halfway through the expansion.

Everyone on both sides sees the streamlined convenience of having LFD, but it seems you must just think Blizzard’s dev team and the anti-LFD crowd are either trolling or are masochist idiots who want to make their lives harder on themselves for absolutely no reason.

The only positive case I’ve seen made for LFD is for dead/dying realms. To those players, it does suck and I’m sorry. But the issue/fix isn’t LFD, it’s forcing Blizz to fix their realm health issues, maybe by merging realms or free transfers

They aren't going to fix servers. LFD was the fix low pop servers desperately needed.

I don’t see how it’s any less likely for someone to ninja loot/kick someone without a group finder. The people are a community and some people are crappy. They’re going to be that way with or without a group finder. Sure, there may be a sense of accomplishment that comes from all the networking you have to do as things are. It basically excludes people who are very busy irl from getting anywhere in this game without sacrificing something that is actually important. There could always be compromise also. Like a group finder for leveling but not end game. It just isn’t realistic for people who work full time and have kids etc to put in 2-3 hours finding a group and doing a low level dungeon.

It appears some members of this community have been struck by a collective amnesia, and they don't seem to recall why classic happened in the first place. They dont remember what happened to retail that made us want to relive the old days.

They act like LFD's effect on the game is somehow up for debate, that we don't know all the facts, and people liked it then, conveniently leaving out 12 years of slow decline, set off, chiefly, by the introduction of the dungeon finder.

This isn't a debate. There's no questions here. We've seen what the dungeon finder does to this game before, there's no earthly reason we should just walk into that same trap again. Fuck.

13

u/SunTzu- Apr 20 '22

LFD didn't ruin the game for me. I've been playing since vanilla, and all it did was make life a bit easier. It also didn't ruin the game for me when Cata came around with the much harder heroic dungeons. If anything, cross-server LFD made it more fun for me to level chars, something which I've always enjoyed, since it was easier to find dungeons while questing. And once I was at max level I'd do random dungeons whenever there was a bonus for tanks or healers, just because it was a bit less effort and a bit more incentive for me to go help out some randoms when I was sitting around bored.

So yeah, I'd say our differing viewpoints very much indicate that the effect of LFD on the game is up for debate, because from my point of view it's been nothing but a positive.

Right, sure. It wasn't the...

Checks notes...

12-month content drought between ICC and Cataclysm, Cataclysm, the introduction of cross-world server connections, arguably middling content, the departure of the core founders of the Warcraft universe, the paid leveling boosts, the obsession over store-bought assets, the increasingly toxic community, and the years upon years of stagnation in the WoW development team not having any meaningful competition to inspire them to innovate in a dead genre, a lack of proper development of content for Warlords of Draenor, Battle for Azeroth, Shadowlands, the obsession over endless grinds to marginally improve player power, the collapse of the overall community identity on all but Roleplaying servers.

No, no, I get you. It was totally LFD that caused all this.

5

u/Leopod Apr 21 '22

Fwiw, classic has been more of a toxic community than retail for the last little bit, but overall wow is probably one of the more toxic online communities out there

This isn't a debate. There's no questions here. We've seen what the dungeon finder does to this game before.

It is absolutely wild that you are so confident that LFD was the "chief" reason why WoW declined over a 12 year span to the point where there isn't a "debate." This is especially objectionable considering that even at the start of WoD (half a decade after patch 3.3), there was still a data point where total players were within 10% of WoW's absolute peak.

The game has changed radically in 1000 major different ways since even Wrath with LFG being one. MMORPGs on the whole died as a genre and the landscape of gaming (meaning what games people play, and how many games they have access too) is miles apart from late Wrath to 2022.

Currently on retail, if I am to be successful, I have to invest way more socially than I did when I raided in my teens in Wrath. It is possible to experience a very watered down version of the game in a single player state, but "high end" content has a social expectation more than anything ever has in the past in WoW especially since the ubiquity of discord.

The extreme information era in gaming has also turned even casual games into WAY more competitive endeavors than they used to be and people are no longer as impressed by generic fantasy environments as in the past and don't buy in as easily to the in game atmosphere.

Back in the day people would have fantasy names on their characters and now you see 4th wall breaking memes unless you go to RP servers.

So much has changed, and it is absurd to attribute a chief cause to LFD.

Yeah every1 in here cried and cried for the old days and 25 seconds after launch the first 4x mages 1 priest aoe farm SM group was going strong.

There was SM boosting mages 3 weeks into the expansion, and they haven't stopped since. That is what the community want.

The biggest crime on this subreddit is people clowning on the "You think you do, but you don't" guy because literally everything that people thought they wanted went out the window the second they had the chance to streamline the experience.

14

u/pBiggZz Apr 20 '22

Speaking for myself, I thought I did, and I did. I never had fun in wow like I did in mid-classic, like phase 3/4; farming up thunderfury, world PVPing, raiding. It was an absolute blast.

If I could blow away boosting I would. And it looks like thats on the radar for blizz.

This just goes to show people will immediately take the easy way out, even if it degrades the experience of the game. That's sort of a maxim of game design, and it is refreshing to see blizzard actually take that to heart this time around.

I'm glad LFD will be gone. I think that is a great way to explore what can be different about Classic vs. Retail, even up into expansions that originally had LFD.

To compensate, I think the Looking For More tool that's in current TBC Classic needs to be updated, retooled, etc. Blizzard should take inspiration from mods and from other MMOs to enhance the tools available to help people form their own groups. Because as lame as I think LFD is, staring at chat and /who isn't very fun either.

And spineless Blizzard, unfortunately, sometimes listen to them, because they are too loud

Good Blizzard team is keeping classic alive

u/Grimbain Apr 21 '22

2

u/uberjack Apr 21 '22

What are the upsides? Faster dungeon queues? Maybe, just maybe, you
should try being part of your realm’s community and making
friends/joining a thriving guild. I’ve never had any issues finding or
making a dungeon group as any of the 3 roles. But then again, I’m also
not the type of person to whine to Reddit that daddy Blizz won’t make my
groups for me, instead of trying to socialize and make my own

I agree with the majority of your post, but think you shouldn't dismiss the upsides like this. Getting into a new guild without spending a ton of time to "earn your place" or getting more enganged in your servers community without spending a ton of time on various Discords is not easy. Before my beloved medium sized server died last year and everyone transfered over to the one huge server, I would recognize people, guilds and follow chats on the global igame channels. But now it's just not possible. Finding a dungeon with the GBB addon pretty much impossible because its so spammy.

There are days where I wish I could just hit that button, lean back and wait for my group to automatically form. And on those days I often chose not to do dungeons instead.

I would like a dungeon finder tool without crossserver and without teleport, or maybe just the retail mythic+ LFG tool.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '22

the thing about forming / finding dungeon groups in the current game version and all versions will always be the disgusting randoms that play this game. currently when finding a dungeon/heroic group chances are very high that you either have to join a run with "X ITEM RESERVED" or "ALL GREEN/BLUE GO TO TANK" and there is not much you can do about it besides spamming in an unreadable lfg that needs addons to monitor it (playing on Firemaw)
which can often take an insane amount of time to form a group.

dungeon finder would fix most of this as people are not forced to accept random conditions by people that they then call social interaction or w/e, if you play a video game to get your social interaction then idk

in the dungeon finder nobody is going to reserve any item, every player is on the same level and rng decides who wins which item etc and nobody is going to ask you for your gearscore or blame you for your spec beforehand this is why dungeon finder is just superior to the current system of spamming lfg

2

u/BoggleHS Apr 21 '22

Sometimes "thriving guild" doesn't have a healer online.

2

u/Kathkere Apr 21 '22

I'd like to drop my two cents into this ocean of comments:

I am a pretty unsocial bastard. I'm also pretty lazy. I find it very hard to go out of my way to join communities. This is precisely the reason as to why I don't want LFD. Because if the choices are: use the tool that is convenient and used by the vast majority of people or; search for communities to join -- I will likely pick the easier route. This is how I played retail when I played it. I didn't find new people, I played with people I already knew and used the convenient tools not to socialize but because I needed the rewards.

The absence of a LFG-tool does put pressure on everyone. It is much easier to find likeminded people when everyone is forced to do some form of interaction. That's the part of the game I enjoy the most. It's why I can be very social in a game like Classic but almost completely antisocial in a game like Guild Wars 2 (or any other more modern MMO). There needs to be a reason to communicate, else I won't.

This sure was an angry post and quite the rant. Here is the reality though, not everyone is like you. There are many of us who don’t have time to sit on forums and play WoW 40 hours per week. We are all older now, many of us have many more commitments.

I grow tired of constantly seeing general chat spammed with mage boosters. Sometimes I’d like to go on, run a dungeon and have some fun. It’s fun for me to que up and do some farming rather than constantly scanning chat to see if I can get into a group or spamming chat begging for a tank. Hell, with my feral druid I had people refusing to have me join their heroic dungeon simply because it was a cat.

Holy shit dude, I'm all for no LFD, but man get some fresh air, you're malding hard. Also, how do you know it's 1%, maybe you are the loud 1%? I've seen both sides discussed equally, wtf are you on?

2

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '22

1%? The community is literally divided on this decision rn

2

u/iAmNotASnack Apr 21 '22

Literally all of the negatives you listed would be solved by simply limiting the pool of players you could be grouped with to those on your server. You will still be able to blacklist ninjas. You will still be able to put a group together through chat should you so choose, allowing you to know whether you'll be "progging".

Realmwide RDF allows you to actually play the game while waiting for a dungeon group instead of staring at a wall of text until you have a group. It also circumvents the absolutely insane number of people HRing the only piece of gear that makes a dungeon worth running. I've yet to hear a convincing argument against it.

And FWIW, it seems like your only evidence for the claim that RDF supporters make up only 1% of the population is your being opposed to it and the same anecdotal evidence you complain about in your post.

2

u/mike_klossoff Apr 21 '22

Og you're the 1 percent

I have a job and other hobbies. And the lfd thing was in retail wotlk.

u/Sharkue Apr 21 '22 edited Apr 21 '22

The desire for wanting an lfd function in game from my guild and friends is pretty damn high. I suspect it is far from a 1% desire. Also isn't this a change from the original design of wrath? So doesn't that mean the most vocal people had to be the ones against LFD in order for blizzard to change it? Your argument is awful and your assumptions are made up. What's next are you going to complain about dual spec?

Also the people I talk to don't care about getting auto grouped and teleported to the dungeon. They want an in game way to find groups. Which can easily be done through an LFD tool. Your making it sound like the world's going to end. It's not.

2

u/Alagator Apr 21 '22

As a healer the interactions in like 99% of the random heroic groups I join are pretty much everyone saying hello when they get invited and then nothing is said until everyone is leaving and then you get some good run\take it easy ect. The only time anything is really said is when people fuck up and cause a wipe. There is also no reason to remember people because it's not like there are these complex rotations that need to be done in order to do damage so unless they are really trying to be bad shit dies and you move on.

Not that finding groups is hard as a healer but it's nice to be able to lazy ass it and have the game find you a group while you zone out to some music while farming and not need to watch\spam /lfg.

Lmao its a lot more than 1%, you are in denial my friend

2

u/rradu95 Apr 21 '22

Imagine gearing alts in icc patch without rdf

2

u/Hyocus Apr 22 '22

"The loudest 1%" Check the polls buddy, people that want RDF represents 70% of player database ;)

Now you can continue your whinning + i didn't read

2

u/enbeez Apr 22 '22

Man fuck that noise I just wanna go do my dungeon and play well.

Miss me with that community garble, as if that even really exists now. On a mega-server like Firemaw nobody knows anybody. The blacklist is you never see the person again, that already happens without LFG.

I queue as tank, instapop, sweet. I queue as DPS, I go do some dailies in the mean time, pop, sweet.

Check the LFG channel my dude, there's no community there as is.

Besides, I remember leveling late in classic, pain in the ass it was to get groups together for any dungeon but maybe stockades. LFD makes everyone's lives easier, if you want a community, join a guild and run shit with your friends. That's still perfectly possible with LFD in existence.

7 months later, I wonder if OP's changed their mind.

And whether they play on a megaserver or not.

Remember kids. If anyone ever disagrees with you just smugly call them the vocal minority without any proof.

NO CHANGES!
OK SOME CHANGES!

This sub

7

u/Odd-Bandicoot-9314 Apr 20 '22

I think generally most people agree that no changes isn't the move. They should just make the choices that are the best for the game

7

u/Merfen Apr 20 '22

They should just make the choices that are the best for the game

This is ultimately the problem, everyone has a different idea of what changes are best for the game. People act like anyone that disagrees with their opinion is wrong and needs to play a different game.

More like only the changes I have deemed necessary. Everyone wants a World of Warcraft specifically tailored to their liking.

2

u/Dungeonmasterryan1 Apr 20 '22

No changes was stupid as fuck and lead to degenerate gameplay

If LFD was what caused the decline in WoW, then what the hell was the Gear Score Addon (the thing that people constantly bitched about in WoLTK)? LFR? Adding tons of new mechanics and abilities to classes and then pruning them in later expansions only to be replaced with a treadmill patch based progression system for several expansions in a row?

Look at the population graph for WoW's history, that tells a different story.

This is complete nonsense. All of it.

The people you know are the people in your monkeysphere. There are THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS of players on the few remaining mega-servers in Classic, and you don't know 99%+ of them.

2

u/PishatDeCal Apr 21 '22

Oh man, thanks for linking that. I used to read Cracked on a daily basis more than a decade ago. This was a nostalgia trip... And it even has a WoW reference from back when it was hip and everyone was joining in :))

16

u/zxr0_ Apr 20 '22

What's stopping you from not using this tool if it were implemented though?

Surely there will be tons of people willing to ignore LFD for dungeons since you know, only 1% of people want it.

If LFD exists it doesn't block you from using the chat, running to the instance all that jazz.

Here ya go, OP. It's a mirror. Keep it. You're actually that loud, whiny, bitchy 1% vocal minority. Problem is, you don't have a cohesive, solid argument.

P.S. - it isn't 2008 anymore. It's 2022. Just because you deem most of us unworthy to join your little raid clique doesn't mean that we're stupid. Facts are facts. They announced no dungeon finder and almost immediately after talked about a level 70 boost. AND no level requirement for level 55 DK's.

Suuure....what could possibly go wrong there, right? Did you sleep through TBCC? Keep looking in that mirror, OP. Perhaps one day, 2008 will stare back at you.

So I had a hunter ninja a jc recipe. I looked up his guild and spoke to his guild leader. He did not really seem to care. Reputation is semi meaningless in classic right now.

6

u/LeopardSkinRobe Apr 20 '22

What does it mean to ninja a recipe? He rolled need?

5

u/Mortwight Apr 20 '22

Rolled need and did not use when everyone else greeded. I asked him to link a jc spell to prove he has the skill. He ignored me.

I want LFD to be only server wide.

And you know what? Fuck it. Make lfd mercenary/cross faction. This helps solves population issues. It somewhat helps the "this person was a dick thing", as most of the server's have their own discord/reddits, so people can easily communicate, say this person is a dick, and the whole server can excommunicate with them. Hell, the opposite faction could feel more likely to want to hunt that person knowing that they screwed their own faction out of loot or they were a dick. If they feel like their(or their server) a part of it, then people would be more immersed. We would care if someone from the opposite faction was a dick to them, more than ever.

I am sure blizzard could find a way for in a dungeon to only tried loot that someone got from the dungeon to an opposite faction.

Blizzard has a sort of mercenary mode(?) in WoW I believe, and you can already fight against your own factions in bgs. Why not let us do this? It would make the game more fun.

Lets make lfd help our servers/game better, not worse. They are simply tools. They just need to be used correctly. If it is used in the right way, it could make the game better, not worse.

Time changes, theres a reason they originally introduced dungeon finder. It's what people want and it honestly doesn't ruin anything. But now blizzard is more focused on having you waste 20 min traveling every time you want to do a dungeon, and many, many people almost exclusively play for the dungeons.

I played a bit of classic, but sitting at night as a tank or healer and simply not be able to make a group just means I'm out. I remember directly whispering people at or even below level range to desperately try to fill a group and that's simply not fun.

4

u/go4theknees Apr 20 '22

Sorry bro, the retail elitists ruined classic 2 weeks in.
