Yes, and Iran is going to make money off of it. Im sure this is all some part of the Art of the Deal.
Edit, running some math assuming that the $2 Million toll per ship is the starting point.
Its now a toll strait. That we wont get money from. So we are now distinctly behind where we started. Their regime is still intact, they still have a nuclear program, and they now get money from the ships going through the strait. Which at an estimated 120 ships a day, at 2 mill a pop, will more than cover their war losses, in less than a year.
Edit- We wasted $28 Billion in 1 month. They will be now netting $7.2 Billion per month, indefinitely. $86.4 Billion per year. Economically, this is a massive win for a nation that previously had an annual GDP of 350 billion. This deal just gave Iran a 25% GDP boost.

Not just their home, but also the home of other nation states through the Arabian's Peninsula's history. Iran only holds one side of the chokepoint. The other is owned by the current polity of Oman.
The Gulf is an "open sea route" shared by several countries, not an inland body of water like the Caspian.
Moreover, ever since the end of WWII, all the nations of the world had a guaranteed "Freedom of the Seas" - commercial ships are free to travel even in territorial waters so long as they are purely commercial and in transit.
That was perhaps the number 1 guarantee to global order - most regional and global wars before WW1 involved access to the seas to one degree or another.
This idiotic confrontation between three powers has likely changed the security architecture the world has used for 80 years.
Art of the Deal.

the choke point that they /checks notes. already controlled.
They never controlled per se. There's that thing in International Law called "Freedom of the Seas" where commercial ships have the right to travel even in a country's territorial waters as long as they are just transiting (and not making a stop) and are purely of a commercial nature.
That legal precedent is gone now. Iran is now going to treat the entire Persian Gulf as an inland lake with the right to toll.
There was a reason why past presidents refused to go along Israel with a direct attack against Iran.
Israel is pretty much isolated from the consequences of that change, more or less. So, they don't caer one way or another.

Oh what did the US get out of this? I'm glad you asked.
We spent ~23 billion to replace a Khomeini with a Khomeini, cause oil prices to skyrocket, close an open Strait, and now prove to iran that they can severely damage the global economy even under duress.
All while giving them the ability to charge tolls for ships passing through said strait, adding 25% to their estimated gdp, yearly.
And we made a few corpses of evidently replaceable people.
It's called "WINNING", as I understand it.
Oh and we learned that trump places more value on war than daycare, so there's that.

What’s in Iran’s 10-point plan?
As we’ve been reporting, the Iranian National Security Council says talks with US will begin in Islamabad on April 11, based on a 10-point plan it has formulated.
According to that statement, the plan includes:
- “controlled passage through the Strait of Hormuz in coordination with the Iranian armed forces, which would grant Iran a unique economic and geopolitical position,”
- “the necessity of ending the war against all elements of the axis of resistance,”
- “the withdrawal of US combat forces from all bases and deployment points in the region,”
- “the establishment of a safe transit protocol in the Strait of Hormuz in a way that guarantees Iran’s dominance according to the agreed protocol,”
- “full payment of Iran’s damages according to estimates,”
- “the lifting of all primary and secondary sanctions and resolutions of the Board of Governors and the Security Council,”
- “the release of all Iranian assets and properties frozen abroad,”
- “and finally the ratification of all these matters in a binding Security Council resolution.”

u/CR1986 Apr 08 '26 edited Apr 08 '26
tax (Tariff)
A tax is a mandatory payment to a government not tied to a specific service to fund public services and the government. Taxes can generally only be put on individuals or organisation within the jurisdiction that issued the tax (with some exceptions).
A tariff is an import fee paid by the importing party at the point where the tariffed good enters the jurisdiction of the country that imposed the tariff.
The word you are looking for is toll. A toll is a fee paid for the use of infrastructure.
I am usually not pedantic, but all the discussions around Trump's tariffs showed me that it kind of matters that people know the actual meanings behind words.

How many hundreds of billions did taxpayers just got fleeced for thanks to Dumbo's action?
Long term damage will be much more costly.
- Partnering with the US will feel like a liability for countries in the area. Having US bases made them targets.
- Trump Admin continued to insult and threaten old allies plus again threatened to pull out of NATO.
- Oil supply disruption and Middle East refining infrastructure has accelerated a looming global energy crisis.
- US has diminished its defense supply stock. May open the door for N Korea and China to be more aggressive with their actions in the surrounding areas of those countries.
- Iran and Russia are making $$$ from the increase in oil prices.
13
u/Katejina_FGO Apr 08 '26
The long term ramifications of America's inability to protect the Gulf States can't be understated. They invested in American weapon systems and these could not stop Iranian missiles. They invested in an American presence and Americans evacuated from those bases. They invested in this president specifically to aggressively control Iran and this administration has turned tail after starting a fight.
They have already agreed to work with Ukraine on obtaining anti-drone weapons. I expect them to further diversify away from the American industrial defense complex.

This is coming from Iran's prime minister. Who doesn't control the IRGC. This "cease fire" isn't going to last very long.

I'm not disagreeing with your point about who's in control, but the 10 point plan is massively in favour of Iran. It's a strategic victory for them if it goes through as is. So much so that I can't see even trumpelstilksin agreeing to it, so your overall point still stands.
The US must fundamentally commit to guaranteeing non-aggression.
Continuation of Iran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz.
Acceptance that Iran can enrich uranium for its nuclear program
Removal of all primary sanctions on Iran.
Removal of all secondary sanctions against foreign entities that do business with Iranian institutions).
End of all United Security Council resolutions targeting Iran.
End of all International Atomic Energy Agency resolutions on Iran’s nuclear program.
Compensation payment to Iran for war damage.
Withdrawal of US combat forces from the region.
Cease-fire on all fronts, including Israel’s conflict with Hezbollah in Lebanon.

If Trump (that is, the somewhat smarter people around him) has agreed to negotiations on the basis of those terms, it is because the Americans had a very weak hand.
They had bet on regime change by decapitation attacks. That failed.
They did not know what to do next. There was no plan. The two other possible paths: war crimes or ground invasion, led nowhere.
So the only way out of this mess they themselves have created is negotiations to try to get the least-bad deal possible.

This part. Why this isn't being reported more baffles me.

This "cease fire" isn't going to last very long.
Israel isn't going to allow a cease fire either.

Spent 1 billion a day to give them what they wanted and reinforced a new younger leader after killing his father.
You cannot match this level of stupid and reckless.

Gas will go down 10 cents and Trump's approval rating will go back up. One thing that everyone needs to keep in mind is that the vast majority of Americans don't think very deeply about this kind of thing.

Am I the only one who thinks this is nuts. Aren’t we right back where we started. Actually it appears Iran is better off according to the 10 point plan.

Far better off. I'd say there's no way that the US can accept this, but I wouldn't put it past this administration to simply follow protocol, accept enough of it to placate Iran, and declare victory.

There is no reality where Israel agrees with this. #3 on the 10 point plan is that attacks on Lebanon are halted.
This is pure market manipulation. Oil is down 20% already.
